LEARN THIS : We typically use the unit of a milliliter when describing
the space that something occupies for purposes of density.

Understanding Density
1. What is the definition of DENSITY ?
Density is the amount of material in a space
2. Water has a density of 1 gram per milliliter . What does that mean?
I mean REALLY… WHAT DOES THAT MEAN ???
It means that water has one gram of material in the space of one milliliter
or that for every milliter of space that water occupies there is one gram of
this material called water.
3. So if I have 123 milliliters of water , what would be it’s mass ? 123 grams
How do you know? Water’s density is one gram of matter for every ml of
space… so if I have 123 ml of water I must have 123 grams of this stuff .
4. MASS measures
Amount of matter
What units are used to measure MASS?
grams
What laboratory tool is used to measure MASS ? balance or scale
This tool uses weight to measure mass … why does that work?
The more something weighs… the greater it’s mass.
5. VOLUME measures
The amount of space
LEARN THIS : We typically use the unit of a milliliter when describing
the space that something occupies for purposes of density.
ONE MILLILITER IS A CUBIC CENTIMETER OF SPACE
6. Here are two blocks….. How much space do they occupy ? 8cm3
How do you know ? By multiplying the length times the width times the
height… 2cm x 2cm x 2cm = 8cm3 or 8 ml
2 cm
2cm
2cm
A
10
grams
2 cm
B
5
grams
2cm
Which block is more dense?
A
2 cm
How do you know ? (be complete) ?
Block A has twice as much matter in the same 8cm3 of space.
7. What else can you tell about these blocks? Label “true” or “false”
Block A is made of a different substance than block B TRUE
Block A ‘s density : 10 grams of stuff in 8 cm3 of space. TRUE
8. What is the density of water?
1gram per milliliter
9.a. How much space is occupied by block A? 8 cm3
b. 8 grams of water will occupy
c. Block A is
more
more?
8 cm3 of space.
dense than water.
less?
How do you know ? (no calculation in your answer)
I know this because block A has two more grams of material in
the space of 8 cm3
