Newsletter Issue #4 - Habitat for Humanity Peterborough

Kawartha Lakes Build
Newsletter September 2013 | Issue 4
WE HAVE LAND!
FINALLY we have some excellent news! The City Council approved an
Giving families a hand
up, not a hand out.
agreement between Habitat for Humanity and The Kawartha Lakes Haliburton Housing Corporation (KLHHC) that will allow H4H
Kawartha Lakes Build to erect 8 homes over the next few years - this
will be a total of 4 semidetached projects. Thank you to everyone,
you've been so dedicated and patient waiting for this to happen.
The building of these homes will begin in 2014, once the land has
been prepared for building and fundraising has been completed. The
parcel of land that the homes will be built on is located at the
corner of Hamilton Street and George Street in Lindsay.
WE HAVE A RESTORE IN LINDSAY!
More good news! We have signed the lease for the ReStore space at 50 Mary Street West
in Lindsay!
The ReStore is a retail store that accepts donations of overstocked, seconds, scratch and
dent, discontinued, used and salvaged building or renovation materials and unique home
décor items. Manufacturers, retailers, contractors and individuals donate products that are
then resold to the public for 40%-80% off the regular retail prices. 100% of all
administration costs of Habitat for Humanity Kawartha Lakes Build are paid for by the funds
raised at our local ReStore. Your support of our ReStore allows every dollar donated to our
organization to go directly into building more, safe, decent homes.
The plan is to have the space open for drops off and volunteer enquiries and for
volunteers to start putting together display units and doing other jobs to help with
construction on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays while the construction is being done.
The goal is to be ready to open by the end of September. We need a few volunteers
to help out any time from 10-4 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – best if we know ahead
of time who is coming so we can have some work set aside for anyone who can help us. Our
driver Joey will be there on Thursday and Friday, and Saturday. We are available for drop
offs from 11:00-3:00 just in case Joey is late getting in to Lindsay or needs to get the truck
back earlier.
If you can volunteer to help at the ReStore, or if you have large items for pick-up, please
call Lucie Cousineax at 705-886-4347 or email [email protected]
INSPIRING YOUTH IN ACTION
A big thank you goes out to
Jenna, Ashleigh & Tanner
Warren.
Treasurer Pam Burtt was
thrilled to accept a $2,357.00
cheque on Sept. 5 from the sale
of their hand-made Kool Klix
bracelets.
These three, with help from
dad Rhys Warren, make Kool
Klix bracelets as a fundraiser
for Habitat for Humanity's
Kawartha Lakes Build.
The kids started making
them in March of 2012 and
began to sell them at their
school. Bracelets were also
sold at the Lindsay Farmer's
Market, Canada Day
celebrations and through a
couple of local businesses.
They continued to make bracelets until the summer of
2013. They finished with a workshop in Peterborough
where they taught over a dozen students to make bracelets
for Habitat for Humanity's builds in Peterborough.
The kids had great success making and selling almost
1,000 bracelets! Kids can make a difference.

HOME OWNERSHIP - WHO CAN APPLY?
Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent
homes in our community and offers local low
income families the ability to own these
homes with 0% interest mortgages, no down
payment and geared to income monthly
payments (25% of gross income).
Who Can Apply?
Habitat for Humanity is open to all
Canadian citizens and permanent residents
of Canada from all cultures and traditions
who are currently living in Lindsay.
When we say “families” we are referring
to a wide variety of family structures
including single parent families, couples,
families with children, and families with
older relatives living in the same home.
Families must have the ability to make
monthly mortgage payments and other
expenses that come with homeownership
and not have an overwhelming amount of
debt. At least one adult must show a
consistent work history of 2 – 3 years.
The entire family’s employment income
and/or long-term disability (ODSP) are
considered. Habitat does not accept
families whose only source of income is
Social Assistant (Ontario Works) or
Employment Insurance.
Building Homes – Building Neighbourhoods
Habitat for Humanity wants to do more
than build homes, we also want to build a
strong community. That is why we are
looking for families who are willing to work
with us and with others. We are looking for
good neighbours and responsible members of
the community.
Cost and Size of Habitat Homes
Habitat for Humanity builds simple,
decent homes with some volunteer labour
in order to help reduce construction costs,
but the final selling price is the appraised
fair market value of the home.
The
Partner Family is also responsible for the
payment of property taxes, insurance,
maintenance and all costs associated with
owning and operating a home.
No Interest Mortgage:
The home is purchased from Habitat
for Humanity Peterborough & District with
no interest mortgages. The mortgages
have a number of special terms, such as
requiring that the homeowners remain the
principal occupants of the home and
keeping it in proper repair.
How do I apply?
Potential Partner Families can request
an information package from Habitat for
Humanity at the Peterborough office by
contacting the Family Services Manager at
(705) 750-1456 or by email at
[email protected]
or on the Habitat for Humanity website:
www.habitatpeterborough.ca/own-ahome/expression-of-interest/expressioninterest-form/
Expression of Interest forms will also
be available at our ReStore in Lindsay
when it officially opens at the end of
September.
