Sheila Devane is a doctor of clinical psychology and a nurse-midwife.
University & the University of Manchester.
She is a graduate of NUIM, Ulster
She is a registered member of the Psychological Society of Ireland [PSI], a member of the British Psychological
Society [BPS], and a member of the Irish [IABCP], British [BABCP] and European [EABCP] associations of
behaviour and cognitive psychotherapy.
Sheila has lived, studied and worked in 7 countries and on 3 continents. For many years her home was East
Africa where as a medical missionary she lived in places as varied as a desert, a rapidly growing urban city, a
famine camp, a country recovering from genocide and very rural villages in Tanzania’s amazing Rift Valley.
While her principal therapy preference is CBT she also uses other modalities as dictated by client needs. She is
particularly interested in Personality work, resilience, mindfulness and in learning more about DBT and its
application to short-term treatment. She values being part of a team and is a committed team player.
Sheila has had a range of professional experiences having worked in hospitals, community settings and learning
institutes in roles of leadership, health care, advocacy, lecturing, training, administration and financial
management.
As a clinical psychologist she founded and directed the Arusha Mental Health Trust [http://AMHT.co.tz] for 15
years. This experience has enabled her to work both therapeutically and for assessment purposes with children,
adolescents, adults, seniors, and families. Her clients came from many cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds
and were people experiencing a wide range of psychological and mental health issues.
She brings with her a deep spirituality, a long experience of multicultural living, an interest in understanding
people, an inclusive nature, a commitment to accepting difference and a curious mind. She believes in life-long
learning and in retirement as a gift to do more of what you like doing!
Her passion is jewellery, her God is smiling and Heaven is a charity shop!
