Using Port Authority’s new Farebox requires very little Change. Our new fareboxes may look and do things a little differently, but they’re just as easy to use as the old ones. At this time, the new boxes accept only cash. Customers who pay their fares with either transfers or zone tickets should hand them to the operator instead of depositing them into the new farebox. If you are paying in cash, here are some helpful tips to help you use the new fareboxes: 1 Pay with exact change. No change will be given for overpayment. 5 Begin paying your fare only when the lights on the coin and bill acceptor are green. Port Authority is currently installing these fareboxes on all of its buses and light rail vehicles. The entire fleet will be equipped by late summer. By spring 2012, these new fareboxes will accept smart cards which will make paying fares easier and faster than ever before. 2 Unfold each dollar bill so that it is as flat as possible. Helpful hints 3 Insert only one bill or one coin at a time into the bill or coin acceptor slot. • Need a transfer? Please be sure to notify the operator before inserting any coins or bills into the farebox. 4 Deposit only $1, $5, $10 or $20 bills into the farebox. Nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar coins are also accepted. Any combination of coins may be used to reach the required fare. • Hand all tickets and transfers to the operator. Do not insert these into the farebox. • To learn more about the new farebox, go to portauthority.org and view our instructional video.
