Internet technologies and the Web are transforming every aspect of the way you do business today.
And they’re changing how you’ll compete tomorrow. How you’ll reach new markets. Deepen customer
relationships. Leverage knowledge. Streamline business processes. Step up efficiency. Compress timeto-market. Communicate with employees. And strengthen your supply chain.
“While the numbers are big, selling goods on the Web doesn’t come
close to capturing the real wallop of the Net. Businesses are adopting
the Internet to get serious work done. By using the Internet to link
directly to suppliers, factories, distributors, and customers, these
companies are electrifying their usually time consuming and tedious tasks.
It’s nothing less than the collapse of time and space between partners.”
InformationWeek

Business is rapidly moving in “e” directions.
It’s not just selling products to consumers online. In fact, that’s just a small
piece of the e-business story. The bigger impact of e-business will be seen in
the process efficiencies that occur when you:
• Make AS/400 applications easier to use and access for existing users
like order processing reps, reservations agents, accountants and
warehouse managers. For example, reorganize a complicated order
entry process or put a hot spot on an order status screen that connects
to the FedEx Website to check a shipment.
• Offer self-service to new users like your agents, distributors and
employees. For example, let dealers check inventory online, let
agents process an insurance claim via the Web, or let employees
look up their vacation accrual on a Saturday.
J Walk™ can help you quickly gain process efficiency and e-business advantage from your AS/400 business applications.
J Walk’s strong customer foundation has been built on host application enhancement and extension, typically targeted
at the traditional users of AS/400 business applications. Increasingly, customers are using J Walk to unlock e-business
potential and reach new users, both internal and external. Either way, it’s the same J Walk software that does the work.
With J Walk, you’ll adapt to shifts in your marketplace and business processes quickly, providing information systems
support faster than users thought possible. And you’ll accelerate your e-business initiatives – deploying extranet,
intranet and Internet applications in a matter of weeks, not the months or even years associated with other approaches.
J Walk to E-Business
J Walk is a complete development and deployment solution that includes pointand-click developer’s tools, specialized server software and self-updating thin
client viewer software. Using J Walk, application developers can enhance
AS/400 applications for process efficiency and for e-business to:
• Implement Web-to-host/host-to-Web connectivity
• Deploy graphical thin clients to any mix of Java, browser or
Windows users from a single development effort
• Integrate multiple applications at the client or server
• Reengineer application workflow, streamlining navigation for
traditional users or isolating specific business processes for Web
deployment to new users
• Enhance the user experience with customized graphical user
interfaces for previously character-based, green-screen applications
• Manage persistent communication between host and user, including
built-in terminal emulation
• Reduce administration and maintenance with zero-administration
client software and robust change management.
All without changing the host application.
2
The workhorse applications that contain most of the world’s data and core
business processes are going to be the IT industry linchpins supporting
revolutionary ways of doing business over the next decade.
Let J Walk transform your AS/400 applications with the enhancements and
functionality your organization needs to do e-business today.
J Walk to Application Enhancement
While industry attention is focused on e-business, there are still many
companies which simply wish to modernize their host applications with
GUI clients; integrate with personal productivity tools like e-mail, Lotus
Notes®, Microsoft® Word and Excel; and adopt the “separate GUI client”
architecture to improve timeliness and maintenance for ongoing
application development. These organizations use J Walk as a standard
part of their development process. As an added bonus, once they install
SEAGULL server and viewer software, they already have the infrastructure
in place to implement e-business initiatives whenever they choose.
With J Walk, you can enhance existing applications – or build new ones
faster. Developers build GUI thin clients in a point-and-click desktop
environment, using templates to quickly establish a consistent design.
Workflow reengineering, client and/or server integration and new
functionality are added without altering underlying AS/400 code.
The resulting graphical clients can then be deployed to any mix of Java,
browser or Windows users – all from a single development effort. And
because the architecture is server-centric, the client software is “zero-admin”.

With J Walk, you can enhance existing applications – or build
new ones faster – in an open, middle-tier architecture deployed
to Java, browser or Windows graphical thin clients.
The J Walk product line includes:
J Walk Developer: PC-based developer toolkit allows developers to build customized interfaces and e-business access
to AS/400 applications without the complexity of new and unfamiliar programming environments. By eliminating
the learning curve of new technical environments, developers can deliver applications faster and more reliably.
And Java developers and Windows experts can build host-centric e-business applications without access to or
familiarity with the host code.
J Walk Server: Running on the AS/400 or on NT, J Walk Server connects to back-end host applications, maintains
persistent and secure connections, stores and updates user interface definitions and delivers thin clients to a volatile
mix of end-user devices and platforms. This middle-tier solution reduces system maintenance and administration by
orders of magnitude. The J Walk Server automatically delivers the most current version of the application when users
access the host. And firewall negotiation, digital signatures and data encryption provide triple security coverage for
sensitive Internet deployments.
J Walk Client: SEAGULL’s portable, open “viewer” software presents the thin graphical interface to the end-user. One
way to think of it is like an Adobe Acrobat® Reader or RealPlayer™ plug-in. J Walk Client is a Java applet or downloadable
Windows application that negotiates the connection to host applications, then recognizes and presents the customized
graphical panels that you built with J Walk Developer. The thin client is pre-coded, tested and finely tuned for internal
network, extranet and Internet deployments – browser, Java or Windows clients in any combination at any time.

Why Does J Walk Lead the Pack?
J Walk enables rapid application enhancement. Whether you want to
enhance an entire 4,000-screen application for internal users, or deploy
a small piece of the app for e-business projects, J Walk is much faster
than building from scratch or code generator approaches. And because
most of the software is already tested and in production (your AS/400
application, J Walk Server and J Walk Client), the quality of your
deliverables is significantly higher than with any other method.
J Walk is comprehensive. GUI building, Web-to-host, emulation, interapplication integration, desktop integration, thin client and data access.
J Walk combines all these capabilities into one easy-to-use development
and deployment solution.
JWalk makes it easier. J Walk does most of the hard work for you, freeing
you to spend development cycles on supporting new business processes,
not low-level programming or duplicating existing application functions
on new platforms.
JWalk opens up your applications. With J Walk, your applications can
be more flexible and responsive to changing needs. J Walk implements a
“shared application services” architecture that separates the user interface
from the host application and the middle-tier business logic. So it is
possible for the host, the server and the UI to change independently.
And because the server and client software support industry standards
for integration, you can incorporate additional software that you buy or
build to deliver composite application experiences to users.
JWalk extends your ROI. J Walk is non-invasive, requiring no changes
to the host code. So your Y2K-ready apps can continue to deliver value
to the business as the backbone for e-business self-service as your
organization reaches out to new internal and external users.

J Walk to Browser, Windows or Java Interfaces
6
With J Walk, you create a new graphical client that dramatically changes
the way users see and work with your AS/400 application:
• Transform green screens into point-and-click graphical panels
• Shorten users’ paths through the application
• Bypass unnecessary screens
• Reengineer the order of screens to improve productivity and
satisfaction with the system
• Combine several screens into one
• Reorganize complicated screens into tab folders, drop-down
list boxes and other graphical interface controls designed
with efficiency and ease of use in mind
• Add a push button to call a Web page to provide related
information
• Populate a list box or combo box with realtime data
While you’re streamlining the appearance and organization, you can
add new functionality without recoding or risking the stability of your
AS/400 application. You can also prepare for Web computing by making
isolated business processes available across the Internet to prospects,
employees and vendors who don’t know – and don’t need to know –
how to work with the function keys and workflows of character-based
screens running on your AS/400.
Your reliable, tested and secure host system still runs smoothly in the
background, but users experience a totally different application. Yet
you’ve not changed a single line of RPG code. And it’s taken only a
fraction of the time that rewriting the application would require.
J Walk to Integration and New Functionality
J Walk goes way beyond just improving visual appearances. It extends.
Integrates. And enhances your AS/400 applications.
With new functionality, your applications stay relevant to changing
business processes and industry needs. You can enhance an application,
for example, using J Walk’s built-in scripting to automatically e-mail an
order confirmation to a customer.
You can integrate or embed the J Walk client into other visual applications
as a component, using ActiveX or JavaBean technology. ActiveX or
JavaBean interfaces allow the surrounding application to take full control
over the host application’s navigation and can retrieve information from
it or feed information into it.
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) support provides an industrystandard way to populate list boxes and combo boxes with data from any
ODBC-compliant data source. And J Walk’s built-in realtime, integrated
data access (RIDA™) allows developers to expose read-only data to users
in list boxes – even data that the underlying application was never
designed to present.
Introducing Wireless-to-Host™,
A New Product Line from SEAGULL
7
J Walk is the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective method for Web-tohost and Windows-to-host accessibility. When it’s time to provide
Wireless-to-Host™ integration and functionality to your users, you can
get there with SEAGULL technology, too.
SEAGULL’s Wireless-to-Host helps you reengineer enterprise application
functionality for wireless access. Build a wireless application framework
for handling transactions and data. Manage the interaction between your
host application and your wireless Web server. All without duplicating
business logic that’s already working in your enterprise applications.
Our Wireless-to-Host solution makes the development and deployment
process faster and easier. The development tool helps you quickly gather
screen identification information so you can find the processes and
content you want to deploy to wireless devices like Internet-enabled
phones, PDAs and Pocket PCs. The application framework helps you
map the host fields to your WML browser layouts. The Java Wireless-toHost server then manages the interaction between your wireless devices
and enterprise applications.
The bottom line: You can open your business applications to the
wireless world quickly and easily, without the time, cost and expertise
required to build a wireless application from the ground up. It’s the
same value proposition that made SEAGULL the industry leader in
e-business enabling technology for host application assets – the next
logical step in providing a complete suite of software technology that
leverages proven business processes on new devices and platforms.
Without altering the host application.
J Walk to Zero-Administration Architectures
Graphical panels built with J Walk
can be served multiple ways. So a
user can access the J Walk graphical
client through a browser today, on
a Windows PC tomorrow or a Java
machine the next day. With J Walk,
it’s that simple. It’s that flexible.
8
And it’s that easy.
J Walk’s three-tier network computing architecture allows rapid deployment.
It reduces maintenance. Supports change management and software version
control and consistency. Unites disparate systems. Provides a closer
match between computing capability and user needs. And it represents
one more evolutionary step toward zero-administration architectures.
J Walk gives you the flexibility to support a volatile mixture of user devices
and deployment architectures, including thin clients on PCs, traditional
Windows client/server environments, certain hand-held computers,
diskless PCs, devices or browsers running Java Virtual Machine.
For example, the deployment of thin clients via low-bandwidth data
streams enables you to centralize control of applications. So you don’t have
to maintain software on hundreds of client PCs. You can automatically
serve the latest version of the software to authorized users on demand –
whether they’re connected to the LAN or via the Internet. J Walk simplifies
maintenance and ensures that users get the most up-to-date version of
the software.
J Walk’s superior technology complements the data integrity, security
and performance that you expect from your AS/400 applications. And
with a single development effort, you can deploy to an ever-changing
combination of client devices.
“J Walk had the zero-admin infrastructure
already in place, which meant we could
drop in a new version of our application
and the end users would pick it up the
next time they came in to use the software.
That really saved us a lot of time and
money in maintenance and administration.”

J Walk Onto the Open Web
The Web is changing everything. Opening up the supply chain. Creating
a new way to exchange money. Modifying the rules of commerce.
J Walk makes AS/400 applications
available to authorized users via
the Web. It lets you use the
Internet as a communications
backbone. And it provides
integrated access to the wealth
of information and business
opportunities on the Web.
10
Emerging electronic marketplaces deliver information about products
and support automated transactions – business-to-business and businessto-consumer alike. Portal-like interfaces to intranet or extranet applications
provide a gateway to corporate data.
This revolution is not just about buying books at amazon.com or daytrading for fun and profit at E*TRADE. In a special report, Business Week
cited Forrester Research findings that e-commerce between businesses
is five times larger than consumer transactions. By 2003, the total of
business-to-business transactions is projected at $1.3 trillion.
While your competitors are figuring out what to do, you can be using
J Walk to update and streamline host application workflow, making
data and functionality available and intuitive to your “extended family.”
And you’ll be creating and deploying solutions that leverage the latest
technology without the extended time, risk and cost of new development.
It’s the best shortcut to AS/400 applications enhanced with new
functionality. And to integrated workhorse applications that make
information accessible when and where it’s needed.
With J Walk, everything you need for e-business enablement is included.
Simply connect the J Walk technology to your foundation application –
you’ll be up and running on the Web in weeks, even days. In fact, many
J Walk customers deploy e-business solutions in 45 days or less.
Unlike terminal emulators, screen scrapers or HTML generators, J Walk
lets you customize the graphical client as much as you want. So the
resulting thin client viewer will support all application features and all
graphical controls via the Web, including the new functionality and
enhanced workflows you build with the J Walk solution. J Walk includes
integrated support for printing AS/400 spool files over the Web, without
requiring any additional client or server software. It also lets you provide
persistent, stateful access to host applications via the Web – which is
essential for building Internet access to complex and/or compound
host processes.
J Walk lets you hook your applications to the
Internet in a myriad of ways:
• As a Java applet served on demand to any authorized user
• Hot spots built into Web pages that trigger functionality in an AS/400 application,
displaying results in the browser
• Push buttons on your application’s new graphical client that automatically launch
a browser and load a Web page
• A browser-based, thin Windows client implementation where the newest software
is served on demand via the Internet through ActiveX and/or browser plug-ins
• A thin Windows implementation in which the client is accessed via technologies
like Citrix MetaFrame and Microsoft’s Windows Terminal Server
• A traditional client/server or Windows implementation with the Internet extending
or replacing your own LAN communications backbone
11
J Walk Step by Step
You don’t have the time and you can’t run the risk of new development.
You need a tool that will invigorate your existing applications, but won’t
require you to rewrite your applications from the ground up or develop
new functionality from scratch.
Your AS/400 applications are software components – tested, proven and
ready to go. With J Walk, you can build new components onto this open
framework quickly, easily and effectively. For new development efforts,
you want the ability to write quickly – in, say, C++ or Java – and know
your toolset can take that new code further, faster.
With J Walk, you leverage your existing RPG programming talent while
introducing developers to new technology. It doesn’t require you to learn
a new programming language. A couple of days of training is all you need
to be productive.
With J Walk, you can quickly build graphical clients without ever scripting
or coding. You don’t have to develop twice to support both Java and
Windows – you write once and deploy anywhere. That means a shorter
learning curve, faster development and rapid time to market. All graphical
interface development takes place on the PC, so it never affects AS/400
CPU cycles. And we’ve taken the hard work out of Internet-based
computing by pre-building all the connectivity software and presentation
logic for you, so you can take host applications to e-business quickly.
The J Walk Development Process
1. When you install J Walk Collector™ software on a PC and upload it to the AS/400, it automatically
gathers information about all your green screens – even those that are rarely used. Within hours,
you capture all the application screens automatically, without having to manually run the application.
Transfer the file to the developer’s PC and continue development independently of the AS/400.
Note: The Collector will operate with or without display file source (DDS) code.
2a. J Walk Developer instantly creates
a picture album containing all the
green screens in your application
and uniquely identifies each screen.
12
2b. Built-in visual palettes allow you
to define the standards for how
each set of graphical objects –
such as radio buttons, push buttons
and frames – will appear on every
panel you build. You can customize
your design or use those provided
in the toolset.
3. The SmartBuild™ agent then applies your
visual standards to the collected screens,
automatically creating graphical panels for
green screens and laying the foundation
for your new client interface.
4. Using J Walk Developer’s Panel Editor, you can
customize screen layout if you wish. Position and
refine push buttons, fields and list boxes. Rename
or reformat fields. Add graphs, pie charts or other
business graphics. Reengineer complicated screens
into tab folders organized by subject. Introduce
enterprise and desktop integration and enhancements.
5. As you create, refine and deploy your graphical panels, J Walk’s wizards and context-sensitive help
guide you every step of the way.
6. After compiling the new graphical panels and other enhancements, you install the resulting user
interface definitions on the AS/400 (or, optionally, NT server) with J Walk Server software.
7. J Walk Server distributes the most current graphical client software to users who access your AS/400
applications. This zero-admin deployment allows you to centralize control of applications at the
server. You can also load your J Walk graphical client directly on individual PCs. Whatever you
choose, you can deploy your new graphical client to any mix of user devices – all from one
development effort.
8. Over time, you can modify or customize your graphical client further using the Panel Editor and
then compile and install the updated UI definitions on the J Walk Server.
13
Change Management
Regardless of how you build your application, you have to plan for maintenance,
administration and upgrades. With J Walk, you’ve separated the presentation layer from
the business logic, and used templates to keep that look and feel consistent. Thus, it’s
easier to “remodel” as your business needs change. J Walk delivers change management
functionality through a wizard – automating an otherwise tedious process.
Simply:
1. Run the Collector over the application.
2. Execute the Migration Wizard.
3. Review the changes reported in the active log.
4. Compile and move to the server.
14
THE J WALK DIFFERENCE: SPEED, QUALITY, COST
J Walk is a software solution that enhances, opens, connects and extends AS/400 applications to support a wide variety of business
objectives ranging from user interface modernization to e-business transaction processing. Alternate approaches include
building the enhancements from scratch and code generator technology. The main issues with either of these approaches are:
(1) multiple development, testing and maintenance efforts to support multiple deployment environments; (2) more new code
means greater risk of software bugs; and (3) it takes longer to get to end of job. The following chart illustrates the simplicity
and speed of the J Walk approach.
DEVELOP FROM SCRATCH
Build, Build, Build
To support Windows, Java and browser users,
you need to build the application for
Windows, then build it again in Java. This
requires developers who are proficient in each
environment and it requires building the client
application individually for each platform.
When this process is complete, you have multiple
client applications to test and maintain.

CODE GENERATOR
Generate, Generate, Generate
Code generators eliminate some development cycles
by letting you define the base application in
the generator’s development tool and then
generating code for the various languages and
deployment platforms. In practically every
situation, developers must “tweak” the
generated code. Therefore, the generator can’t
maintain the application because any tweaking
corrupts the code. Now you must test and
maintain the various versions of the
application in their native environments.
