timeless appeal of yesterday and today.
Although it has the population, charm and
amenities of a smaller city, Northville’s close
proximity to the popular urban areas of Detroit
and Ann Arbor provide an excellent balance to
people who seek the best of both worlds.
The Victorian heritage of Northville sets it
apart architecturally from neighboring
communities. Recent improvements and
renovations are designed to provide for modern
tastes and conveniences in this pedestrianfriendly community.

Making the list of the Detroit Free Press’
“Cool Cities” in 2007 and being a featured
destination in Strut Magazine in 2008 are helping
to raise the visibility of this dynamic city.
Drawing business, residents with quality
The combination of a highly educated
workforce, exceptional schools, convenient
location and an excellent quality of life has
caught the eye of foreign companies. Meiden
Corporation, originating in Asia, has chosen
Northville Township as the location to build a
research and development facility. Additionally,
IAV Automotive, a European-based
company, has relocated its North American
headquarters to Northville Township.
Planners in the City of Northville and
Northville Township have worked together
closely to facilitate commercial research and
development enterprises, as well as residential
projects. Although just 18 miles from Detroit
Metropolitan Airport, more than 6,200 city and
26,900 township residents enjoy an experience
which feels far removed from the hustle and
bustle of big city life. The relaxed, small-town
atmosphere is cultivated by city and township
planners who preserve these characteristics
while enhancing the features essential to
community growth and stability.
Northville is an affluent community with a
median family income of $100,000. Most of its
residents are employed in management positions
in the auto industry or work as professionals in
a variety of fields. A 31-mile commute east to
Detroit or 18 miles west to Ann Arbor delivers
residents into the heart of Michigan’s major
commercial, educational, medical and
cultural centers.
In Northville Township, woodlands and green
space have attracted housing developments over
the past 30 years. More than 75 percent of the
homes in the area have been built since 1970,
almost half since 1980. Still, housing density
remains well below that of other metro
Detroit communities.
Northville’s downtown features a vibrant
mix of shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants,
professional offices and residential housing.
Center Street Square is bringing luxury
condominium living downtown. The custom
Ridge Road. A spur will also
connect to Community Park. These
enhancements are part of the Parks
and Recreation master plan, a guide
that’s used to provide additional nonmotorized bike and pedestrian paths
as development occurs in the area.
Flowing with arts, history
In Northville, history is on display
and is meant to be explored and enjoyed
in a hands-on fashion.
A short walk from downtown, the
11-acre Mill Race Historical Village,
run by the Northville Historical Society,
is a collection of 19th Century buildings
featuring a church, gazebo, blacksmith
shop, wooden bridge, inter-urban rail
station, several homes and an inn. The
village is a beautiful location to have a
family picnic, host a wedding or watch a
vintage baseball game.
Not far from Mill Race Village is
another bit of Northville history: a water
wheel on the Rouge River that provided
power to Northville’s former Ford Valve
plant. Around the bend, spring water bubbles
from Northville’s famous Silver
Springs Well.
The Northville Arts Commission is the
community’s main proponent of the arts,
providing residents of all ages with classes,
suites feature geothermal heating and cooling,
Northville’s first “green roof” and private
balconies.
Another exciting new development in
Northville Township is a collaboration with
Schoolcraft College and the Department of
Homeland Security. Currently plans are underway
to build the $20 million Schoolcraft College
Public Safety Training Complex on the western
edge of the township. The complex will occupy 40
acres in an industrial park and include a vehicle
test track, multi-story fire tower, vehicle burn
simulator, airplane fuselage, overturned tanker,
rail car and mock school bus for training
simulations and a trench rescue area. Future
phases of the project will include classroom space
and an indoor shooting range. This state-of-theart facility will attract public safety students and
instructors from all over the state and will result
in a economic benefit for the township.
In addition, the township’s commercial
corridors and shopping plazas also frequently
attract new and unique businesses.
Northville residents also have access to a wide
range of healthcare providers. The community is
home to many private and group practices of
physicians, optometrists, dentists, chiropractors
and mental health professionals. Some of the
nation’s best hospitals and specialty clinics are
nearby in Novi, Livonia, Detroit and Ann Arbor.
The township recently received a Department
of Natural Resources grant for Linear Park, on
Ridge Road between 5 and 6 Mile. The
improvements will provide pedestrian access to
Johnson Creek, a cold water trout stream and will
connect to existing bike paths on 6 Mile and

lectures, exhibits and performances in the
visual and performing arts. The commission
operates the Art House and Art House Store
in downtown Northville, which offers
affordable and unique quality art,
contemporary fine crafts and provides local
artists exposure and an opportunity
to sell their work.
Enjoying a diverse retail mix
In recent years, Northville has witnessed a
steady growth in its retail sector. New shopping
outlets are under construction in various
sections of both the township and the city.
New stores are opening their doors on a
regular basis.
At 5 Mile and Sheldon roads, Benton’s
Crossing is a 60,000-square-foot shopping
center which includes CVS Pharmacy,
neighborhood bar/restaurant and a nail salon.
Ridgewood Plaza is in the final stages of
construction at 6 Mile and Ridge, with tenants
such as a deli, Indian grocery store, daycare
center and other retail enterprises signing on
for occupancy. Another new business
development at 5 Mile and Haggerty
has been completed.
Heslip’s Corner, at 7 Mile and Napier, is a
collection of small, independent stores,
including beer and wine, deli, dry cleaner, ice
cream shop, pizza, bakery and caterer.
Northville Square is the newest
redevelopment to open in downtown Northville,
a project that currently features Dino’s
Restaurant & Lounge, Solid Grounds Coffee
House, Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists,
Oasis Tanning Salon, Miss Harriet’s Dance
Studio, CV Media, WWK Investments,
gg Resort and Pure Barre.
Downtown Northville. Providing a unique
retail experience has been a true success of the
DDA’s recent marketing efforts. Improvements
to the downtown area and its charming
shopping district have made Northville into an
exciting regional destination.
The “Timeless…with a Twist” campaign is
drawing attention to the rich history and
charming atmosphere of downtown Northville.
“Always something happening” and
“Something for everyone” are themes for the
variety of festivals and events planned for the
town, from the traditional Victorian Festival
and the Northville Farmers’ Market to the
summer concert series.
Highlighted in the campaign are features of
the new revitalized downtown retail hub. The
improvements were outlined in a 2006
strategic plan devised by city officials with
Chamber input. The partnerships and
completed project has gained the attention of
regional publications.
Whether shopping in town or throughout
the new developments in the township,
Northville offers a shopping experience that
can range from picking up a quick present to
spending a day filling the back of the car.
Recreation in and around Northville
Beautiful parks and recreational facilities
are a point of civic pride for the Northville
community.
As a shared service of the city and
township, the Northville Parks and Recreation
Department has been recognized as one of the
best joint services in Michigan.
As a team, the department operates and
continually looks for ways to improve its public
parks: Community Park, Ford Field, Fish
Hatchery Park, Northville Dog Park and
Millennium Park. Comprising a total of 145
acres, city and township parks include eight
soccer fields, with four additional practice
fields, one lacrosse field and 12 baseball
diamonds, four of which are lighted. There are
also three picnic shelters, five play structures,
tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, basketball
areas and fishing spots.
With more than 15 miles of recreational
paths connecting the community, Northville is
easily enjoyed on foot, inline skates or by
bicycle. As new developments are considered in
the township, additional footpaths, bike paths
and recreational opportunities are
incorporated into the plans.
Recently completed renovations at
Community Park, totaling $3 million, include
baseball, soccer and lacrosse fields, as well as
a dog park. Located on 5 Mile just west of
Beck, Community Park offers many
recreational opportunities. Additional minor
improvements to Community Park and area
soccer fields are next on the Parks and
Recreation agenda.
Northville is also located near Maybury
State Park, which features nearly 1,000 acres
of meadows and forests, along with miles of
trails for watching wildlife, mountain biking,
cross-country skiing, hiking and horseback
riding. There are playing fields, picnic areas,
playgrounds, a fishing pond and Maybury
Farm. G

EDUCATION
Making the grade
Northville schools reach top five in Michigan
EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE IS A
characteristic that Northville schools have long
demonstrated. Year after year, the district has
shown the commitment and dedicated the
resources necessary to provide students with a
first-class academic experience. It has set a goal
to maximize learning opportunities for each of its
7,200 K-12 students.
In the 2007/08 school year, each of
Northville’s six elementary schools, two middle
schools and high school achieved composite
grades of “A” on the Michigan School Report
Card and met AYP status under the federal No
Child Left Behind Act. The district also operates
two special education center programs at Cooke
and Old Village schools.
For five years running, Northville students
have consistently scored above average on the
annual Michigan Education Assessment Program
tests, which makes it one of the top five districts
in the state. The test is administered to
elementary and middle school students.
As younger students perform well on the
MEAP exams, high school students demonstrate
their knowledge on the Michigan Merit Exam.
The school’s ambitious curriculum and
teaching styles encourage growth for all children,
including those who have special needs and those
who are performing beyond their peers.
While the state assessments are important to
school funding and success, the school is also
focused on the safety of students. The Northville
district, along with five other districts in the
region, collaborated to earn a $569,000 grant by
the U.S. Department of Education to help
enhance and fortify readiness and emergency
response management plans in their schools.
Ongoing training exercises for administrators,
teachers and students have demonstrated
Northville’s commitment to providing a safe and
secure learning environment.
Northville does not accept schools-of-choice
students from outside districts, but in-district
parents may choose which elementary or middle
school is right for their child.
Residents can also choose to send their
children to one of the community’s four private
school systems: Our Lady of Victory School, St.
Paul’s Lutheran School, Northville Montessori
Center and Northville Christian School.
After graduating, Northville students don’t
have far to go to attend some of the nation’s
finest colleges and universities. The University
of Michigan, Michigan State University,
Eastern Michigan University, Lawrence
Technological University, Madonna University,
Mercy College, Oakland Community College,
Schoolcraft College, St. Mary’s College,
University of Detroit/Mercy, Washtenaw
Community College and Wayne State
University are all within commuting
distance.
Knowing that high-quality educational
opportunities are available for all ages has
long been one of the greatest strengths
in the Northville community. G

ONE OF THE PRIMARY WAYS the Northville
Chamber of Commerce is serving its members,
and the community, is by fostering powerful
partnerships. Through cooperation with
businesses, community organizations, the
Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and
township and city officials, the Chamber is seeing
great results.
The DDA and the Chamber of Commerce are
close allies in the effort to provide a town center
comfortable for families and attractive for
tourists. As the DDA continues its campaign to
draw attention to the new downtown area, the
Chamber focuses on enhancing services to its
Dr. Abir Faraj is no stranger to
the hectic pace of family life.
Married to a pharmacist, Dr. Faraj,
a mother of three, realizes the
importance of extended hours and a
pleasant atmosphere in dentistry.
“My goal is to make patients feel
comfortable,” says Dr. Faraj, a graduate of the University of DetroitMercy. “ We open at 7:30 a.m. and
stay open late one night a week
because life doesn’t just happen
from 9 to 5.”
While her office hours allow
patients to relax about scheduling
concerns, Dr. Faraj’s “health first”
attitude is another asset that patients
appreciate. Although Dr. Faraj
performs a variety of cosmetic
procedures like veneer application
and Zoom bleaching in addition to
regular treatments, there is no highpressure sales pitch for
unnecessary cosmetic
procedures.
“I concentrate on treatments that
are really needed, and on general
oral health,” Dr. Faraj says.
Dr. Faraj’s main objective is
teaching and maintaining patients’
health in a comfortable setting, so
she employs a variety of tools to help
people of all ages feel at home in her
office. “It’s a very caring, warm
atmosphere here,” says Dr. Faraj, a
member of the Michigan Dental
Association and Detroit District
Dental Society. “We offer nitrousoxide sedation, relaxation CDs,
noise-reduction headphones, warm
blankets, and even a massage chair.”

members and enriching the economic impact for
the community as a whole.
In this past year, the City of Northville
dedicated a new town square. This area was
redesigned to provide a dynamic and multifunctional gathering space that can be enjoyed
year-round.
Along with cosmetic improvements, the Town
Square now has more open space for community
functions, beautiful landscaping for comfort and
color, and a central relocation for the Northville
Clock. A pavilion replaces the old band shell and
a fountain provides a water attraction in the
summer and becomes a fire pit during cooler
months. Combined with new lighting and seating,
the Town Square provides ambiance for the
downtown shopping, dining and entertainment.
This redevelopment is part of an overall
downtown vision that is still unfolding. There are
still plans to create a connection from the
downtown area to Ford Field, which boasts a
lighted ball diamond, playground, walkway, picnic
tables and other gathering areas.
Dave Cole, owner of the Great Harvest Bread
Company, has witnessed the amazing
transformation from outside his front door.
“The town square was nice before, but the
work that has been done is fantastic. In our store,
we continually get enthusiastic praise for our
town,” he said. “Just recently, a couple came in
from California, and they told one of my staff
members that Northville was the ‘prettiest little
town they had ever seen.’” G

Timeless with a twist
Seeing results through partnering
Creating business, community 45 years later
Since its incorporation in 1964, the Chamber has grown to include a diverse membership
of more than 500 retailers, manufacturers and service providers. In cooperation with
Northville’s Central Business Association, Downtown Development Authority, Northville
Public Schools, local private schools and the governments of Northville Township and the City
of Northville, the Chamber diligently works to advance the community’s quality of life and
strengthen the region’s economy and business mix.
Annually the Chamber sponsors a number of events that draw tens of thousands to the
community, including the Victorian Festival, State of the Community Luncheon, Taste of
Northville Business Showcase, Hometown Holidays, Fire and Ice and the weekly Farmers’
Market. The annual Grub Crawl shuttles hundreds of hungry participants to many of the
best Northville area restaurants for food and fun.
The Chamber recently added Oktoberfest. The two-day traditional Bavarian festival
takes place in “Oktoberfest Village” and includes children’s rides, games, classic car show,
authentic German food, live entertainment including Polka bands and a Beer Garden.
The Chamber also gathers and distributes local demographic information, including
lists of organizations, clubs, schools, healthcare providers, restaurants and events. The
Chamber’s website—www.northville.org—is another tool used to promote local
businesses. The site receives thousands of hits every month, providing information on
topics ranging from how to join the Chamber to information on each of its special
events.
According to Jody Humphries, President of the Chamber of Commerce, “We are
making sure the programs are as strong as they can be so we can assist our members
in meeting the challenges they face. By doing that, we put ourselves in a position to
address new opportunities as they present themselves, and we see some of those
opportunities approaching in the near future.”
