The Withlacoochee Patriot Paul Pardee, Editor: ( [email protected]) Withlacoochee Chapter FLSSAR July 2012 Withlacoochee Honors the Flag June 14th is Flag Day and Withlacoochee Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, made it a major celebration. We, along with the Fort Cooper DAR, had representatives at a number of the Libraries including Floral City. At the Floral City Library large framed copies of the Constitution and Bill of Rights were presented to Eric Head, Director of the Inverness Library System. At other locations miniature Flags were given out, along with membership tri-folds and at some locations Historic Flags were displayed and explained. There were also some DVD presentations made of “Flag of our Fathers”. The Stars and Stripes originated as a result of a resolution adopted by the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress at Philadelphia on June 14, 1777. The 1777 date has been considered the Stars and Stripes Birthday since that time but it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Pictured above from left to right are Compatriot Larry Sturgeon, Eric Head, and Compatriot Richard Sumner. A decree from The President “In Congress, July 4, 1776” “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America” is the way this famous Declaration begins. It is a wonderful document that has served us so well for 236 years. The American Revolution and preserving the freedoms that were fought for and won is what we are all about. Our Withlacoochee agenda and actions throughout the year show our respect for the things our Patriot Forefathers secured and have passed down to us. We show our appreciation through the year with activities such as .. Veterans Day Fair and Parade and Recognitions .. JROTC Awards and Recognitions .. Hero Medals, Law Enforcement, and Safety Medals .. Good Citizenship Medals, civic appreciation and recognition certificates .. Support of our Veterans at the State Veterans Home .. Our Partnership with the Scouting Program .. Our 5th Grade Poster Program .. Our observances of Memorial Day, Flag Day, Wreaths Across America .. The many Patriotic activities of our Color Guard. We have every right to Celebrate the 4th with a degree of joy, satisfaction and pride. Dot and I will hang the Patriotic Bunting on our Cottage and enjoy the fireworks across the Lake. We will be thankful for our heritage, family and many friends. We wish all will enjoy a healthy and safe month of JULY. GOD BLESS AMERICA! The website is maintained by Compatriot Dan Pushee. If you want the Withlacoochee Patriot to honor your ancestors who fought in the cause for American Independence, please send me your ancestor’s biography for publication. This site is very interesting for those members who want to find out more about their patriots service. It’s called Fold 3 formerly footnote. They have all sorts of records, including: pensions, obituaries and newspaper clippings, US census, ect. I find this site to be a valuable tool to any genealogist who wants to explore more military information about his/her ancestor who participated in the American Revolution and beyond. Would you like to see your ancestors gravesite? You may be able to see it at www.findagrave.com . This website is excellent for anybody who wishes to see their ancestor’s tombstone for info they didn’t know about. US Gen Web is a website which has a lot of county information you would like to know about. If you would like to know the town cemeteries, or see if they have a local record you are searching for, this is the site to go to. Jas Townsend & Son is the place to get your militia and continental uniform gear. The Sutler at Mt. Misery is like Jas Townsend but with more inventories that will certainly add style to your uniform. Darlene Neuhaus doesn’t have a website but you can email her to make an order for your customized uniform. A few of our guardsmen wear these uniforms and they are very proud marching in them. If you would like to place an order by phone, her number is 817- 496-4160. Email me to get the form. The Withlacoochee Patriot Page 09 The Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The Americans Creed I believe in the United States of America, as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just power are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. The SAR Pledge We, descendents of the heroes of the American Revolution, who by their sacrifices established the United States of America, reaffirm our faith in the principles of liberty and our constitutional republic, and solemnly pledge ourselves to defend them against every foe. The SAR Recessional Until we meet again, let us remember our obligations to our forefathers who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an independent Supreme Court, and a Nation of Free Men.
