YOUNG PERSONS’ LECTURE COMPETITION Rules 2016 Brazil National Final 1- AIM The aim of the Young Persons’ Lecture Competition is to provide an atmosphere of friendly competition for young scientists and engineers in the disciplines of Materials, Minerals, Mining, Packaging, Clay Technology and Wood Science so that their presentation skills will improve whilst addressing an informed audience. 2- RULES The National Competition, sponsored by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining with support from Companhia nhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração Minera o (CBMM), will consist of the selection of ten abstracts to compete in the National Final. The winner of the National Final will represent Brazil in the World Final of the Young Persons’ Lecture Competition to be held hel in Araxá-Minas Minas Gerais /BR on 10 – 14 October 2016. The lectures should be on a Materials, Minerals, Mining, Packaging, Clay Technology and Wood Science and Engineering subject. 2.1 Category The National Final, will be open to students and graduates age 28 or under on 28 April 2016, in industry or academia. 2.2 National Finalists The names of the participants, together with the title ti le of the presentation and an abstract of maximum 150 words,, in English, must be submitted to the National Co-ordinator ordinator (CBMM) (CBM no later than April 06, 2016. 2.3 Presentations Each entrant will give a presentation in English lasting not more than 15 minutes on a subject of their choice about any aspect of Materials, Minerals, Mining, Packaging, Clay Technology and Wood Science Engineering. Facilities at the National Final will permit OHP slides or computer generated presentations to be used. NB: PowerPoint 2013 is the software used at the World Final. 2.4 Questioning Questioning from three of the judges (appointed prior to the event) will take place immediately after each presentation. Each judge may ask one question. 2.5 Judges A panel of three judges chosen by the National Co-ordinator Co ordinator (CBMM) will adjudicate the competition. Judges should be made up of Academics and Industrialists. For the National Final, at least one of the judges should be of MIMMM CEng grade within the Institute Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. 2.6 Judging Criteria The seven judging criteria for the National Final are listed below. Each entrant will be marked from a total of 100 points. Scores are as follows: a. Structure of the lecture, clarity of explanation and argument, neither assuming too much or too little knowledge on the part of the audience. (20 marks) b. Standard of presentation, clarity of diction, personal enthusiasm for the subject, ability to deliver lecture spontaneously (points deducted cted if constant reference to notes or (20 marks) memory aids interferes with presentation of the lecture) c. Clarity and relevance of any visual aids used. (15 marks) d. Calmness and competence in handling judges’ questions. (15 marks) e. Technical content of the presentation. (10 marks) f. Ability to deliver a concise meaningful summary at the end of main points. (10 marks) g. Clarity and relevance of the entrant’s abstract. (10 marks) 2.7 Penalties Marks will be deducted for over-running running of lecture time as follows: Penalties By 2 to 4 minutes (i.e. between 17 to 19 minutes in total) 5 marks By more than 4 minutes (i.e. more than 19 minutes in total) 10 marks 3- NATIONAL FINAL The National Final will be held at CBMM Headquarters, Araxá, MG, on April, 28 2016. Travelling expenses (equivalent to Standard Class) and accommodation where necessary, will be paid for by CBMM for those selected to compete in the National Final. All competitors will receive prize money. The winner of the National Final will also receive an Apple Mac Book Air and an all expenses paid trip to the World Final in Dublin, where they will represent Brazil. 4- WORLD FINAL AND PRIZES The World rld Final will take place on 10 October 2065 in Araxá-Minas Gerais/BR..
