PRSSA USF CHAPTER TO HOST PUERTO RICAN
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF FLORIDA CEO FOR
LECTURE ON ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF STATEHOOD
TAMPA, FLORIDA: The Puerto Rico Statehood Students Association University of South Florida Chapter
announced that it will host the CEO of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida, Mrs. Elizabeth
Cuevas-Neunder for the lecture “Economic Benefits of Statehood for Puerto Rico and the Tampa Bay
Area”, next Monday, February 27th, 2012. The lecture will be hosted at the University of South Florida
Marshall Student Center room 3711 and will be from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
Mrs. Cuevas-Neunder has been known since the January 27, 2012 CNN Republican Presidential Debate,
in which she was able to ask the candidates about Puerto Rico and Governor Luis Fortuño. Ever since
she has become a spokeswoman for the Puerto Rican community in the state of Florida.
“We are very excited to host Mrs. Cuevas-Neunder for this exciting opportunity to discuss the benefits of
having Puerto Rico as the next state of our nation” said Luis Laracuente, President of the PRSSA USF
Chapter. “We look forward to having a thorough and educational discussion of the topic, that helps bring
the issue to light to many students.”
The issue of Puerto Rico and its status problem has come to light recently for various reasons. Puerto
Ricans are the second largest Hispanic voting group in the US, and their vote might prove decisive in
the 2012 elections, especially because of the State of Florida, where nearly 800,000 Puerto Ricans have
their home. In addition, Governor Luis Fortuño has become a rising star within the Republican Party,
mentioned as a possible Vice Presidential candidate in the upcoming elections. Thirdly, this year Puerto
Rico will go to the ballot box to decide its preferred status option, and could ultimately decide that it wants
to enter the union as the 51st state.
The Executive Board of the organization’s chapter at USF extends its invitation to anyone interested on
learning more about the issue.
The PRSSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the discussion about Puerto Rico’s self
determination in greater forums, as well as representing pro-statehood students in the continental United
States and Puerto Rico.
