Two national records highlighted the 1964 State
Track and Field Meet held May 15 and 16 at Kansas
Manhattan. A total of l3 existing
State University,
state records were broken and 2 others tied in the
greatest assault on the record books since 1955
when 16 were broken and 2 tied. The 1955 meet
included one national record (Charles Tidwell of
lndependence skimmed the 180-yard low hurdles in
18.5 seconds).
In addition to the 15 records tied or broken in
Classes AA, A and B, all 16 marks set in newly
formed Class BB stand as records.
Jim Ryun of Wichita East, thrilled the 6'500
spectators, as he ran the fastest mile ever by a
high school boy to highlight the 54th annual state
high school meet. The l7-year-old junior did it in
4:06.4, breaking his own state record of 4:16.2
set in 1963, and the existing national record of
4:08.7 set by Dennis Carr of Whittier, California.
The national medley relay record was broken
by Wichita East in a time of 3:25.0, well under the
existing national record of 3:27.4 set in 196I by
LaHabra, California. The mark bettered the previous
state record of. 3:34.2 set by Shawnee Mission East
in 1961. The record breaking foursome was made up
of Chris Forsberg (440), Dvight Hart Q20), Earl
Yarbrough Q20) and Jim Ryun (880). The same team
members won the finals on Saturday with a time of
3:30.8, but ran in a different order.
Wichita East garnered their lfth state championship since L929, their third in the last four years (the
first state champion was crowned in 1911. Wichita
won 4 state titles from 191f -1928), in overrvhelming
the CIass AA field by accumulating 56 points. Shawnee Mission East placed second with 26 points and
Wichita North third with 14 points.
Eric Robinson won both hurdles, and was second
in the broad jump to be the top scorer for East.
The Blue Aces earned nro places in three different
events and tallied in 12 of the 16 events.
Hoisington dominated the Class A field'by scoring
39 points to capture their second state title. Their
first was in 1953. Runner-up Concordia scored 19
and Mulvane accumulated 14, good for third place.
Bill Kimble was the main show for the Cardinals,
winning the 100 and 200-yard dash, the low hurdles
and anchored the record breaking 880-yard relay
team. Hoisington's other wo firsts were by discus
thrower Don Clutter and its record tieing mile reIay team.
Kinsley successfully defended its Class B crown
with a multitude of underclassmen in scoring 31
points. Caldruell registered'17 and Lakin 12 l/2 f.or
seqond and third.
The Coyotes, in winning their second state championship, had four firsts and scored in eight events.
Ken Gaines won the high jump and high hurdles and
ran a leg on the winning record breaking medley relay team. Kinsley's other first was in the 880-yard
relay, where they tied the state record.
Ford had the narrowest margin of victory of the
four classes in defeating Fairview 24 I/3 to 18.
t4
Mount Hope and Soldier tied for third place with 12
points.
The Bulldogs annexed the first Class BB championship and were lead by the phenominal Jim Askew who
placed third in the 1O0-yard dash, anchored the winning 880-yard relay team, won the 880-yard run and
then placed second in the 220'yard dash, in that
order.
