Connotation and Denotation
Many words have both a denotation and a connotation. A word’s denotation is its
dictionary definition. A word’s connotations are the ideas and feelings associated with the
word. Study this example from The Diary of a Young Girl:
Things have gotten so bad in Holland that hordes of children...beg for a piece of bread.
While the denotation of horde is “a large group,” the word’s connotation suggests an out-ofcontrol swarm that is desperate for food.
Practice and Apply: Tell how the meaning of each sentence would change if the
underlined word were replaced by the word in parentheses.
