LISTEN!
Listen. Can you hear it rumbling in the
basement bars, the coffee shops, the festival
stages, warehouses and theatre spaces in
Dublin? Can you feel the current between a
lone voice and a rapt crowd in spaces across
Ireland? Can you sense the bravery of a
performer turning the truth into words? Can
you see the audience nodding and whooping
as they hear themselves reflected? There is
a momentum here in Ireland in spoken word
poetry. It is more alive and vital than ever, and
it is growing every day. They say to “go where
the energy is.” Right now, in Ireland, that
energy is in live literature.
Lingo Festival is born out of that energy and in
service to it. We exist—created by artists—to
showcase this truly vital artform, as alive in
dim pubs as it is in Presidential ballrooms,
from perspectives young and old, LGBT and
straight, rich and poor. Art thrives on the love
of it, and artists thrive on a community of
support. Lingo is a product of that love and
community.
What Lingo hopes to offer you is a chance to
taste the best of what Irish spoken word has
to offer, and that you’ll come away inspired and
joyful. We are featuring spoken word artists
from around the world -- luminaries from the
United States, United Kingdom, and beyond,
alongside the most talented Irish spoken
word poets breathing air. From Saul Williams
to Hollie McNish, Elaine Feeney and John
Cummins; the eclectic Tongue Fu and world
beatboxing legends to All-Ireland Poetry Slam
Champions, and charity events, family shows
& youth programmes—we have something
for everyone. We’ve collaborated with some of
the leading event creators around Ireland, as
well as partners such as Dublin City Council,
Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, Visit Dublin,
and Poetry Ireland to curate new formats
for poetry over the course of our festival
weekend. Spoken word is a modern revolution
here, and the talent of the artists continue to
be an enduring national resource. And every
one of our artists was chosen for their unique
spark—a singularity in their writing and
performing that makes people see the world a
little bit differently.
Spoken word requires no equipment -- just a
voice. Can you hear the rumble? Come and
listen.

“CITYSONG”

Citysong is a day in an hour. That day is today,
but it’s also thirty years ago and it’s also sixty
years ago. It’s five people telling you about
the thousands of people who get up, who go
to work, who go to parties, who have babies,
or used to at least. It’s a song, it’s a poem, it’s
a history, it’s a portrait. It’s different things at
different times, and it’s about different things
at different times. Your mother before she
was your mother and her mother before she
was hers, in this city before it was this city.
See Dylan Coburn Gray, winner of Lingo’s
inaugural New Work prize, premiere this
new spoken word theatre piece written
exclusively for the Lingo festival. Dylan is an
experienced poet and playwright, and is a
regular on the spoken word scene. His play
Boys and Girls premiered as part of Dublin
Fringe 2013, winning the Fishamble Best
New Writing Award. It was also nominated
for the Stewart Parker Trust Award, and for
the Best Theatre Script Award at the Irish
Writers’ Guild Awards.

More recently he played the lead

Stephen Clare:
Typewriting Poet
Appearing at selected festival venues
and Best Western Academy Plaza Hotel
Stephen Clare writes completely original,
confidential, personalised, on-the-spot
poems. He will write on any topic you would
like, and each work is typed up carefully
on a vintage typewriter as you watch. He is
very passionate about deconstructing any
notions you may have about poetry being
pretentious, academic, or unrelatable. This is
an experience based on connection, and the
art that can stem from it. As each poem is
created on the spot on a manual typewriter,
you get the only copy and walk away with
a poem that is purely yours, to do with
as you will.Keep an eye on our Twitter (@
LingoFestival) and Facebook (/LingoFestival)
throughout the weekend for live updates on
where to catch Stephen and his typewriter.
John Moynes:
Lingo Poet Laureate
John Moynes, the “most widely-read
living poet in Ireland,” is Lingo’s 2015
Poet Laureate. Known for his topical
daily limericks on Broadsheet.ie, John is a
performer, writer, and bearded bard. Over
the course of the festival, he will be offering
daily summaries of the happenings at Lingo
for the assembled adoring crowds as each
night draws to a close. John will also do a
special performance at our opening night
on Friday, as he accepts the torch from John
Cummins, the inaugural Lingo laureate.

Stray Lines, a collective of Ireland’s
alternative cartoonists and illustrators, will
be present at selected events throughout
the festival, to visually document, reinterpret
and capture the spoken word performances,
attendees, topics discussed and anything
else that comes to mind! Each evening their
unique artwork will be scanned and shared
across our social media channels, as well as
on our Lingo website.

STENCIL TRAIL OF A
HUMAN TALE
Across this fair city, north and south of the
river, the artist and writer Davina Brady has
stencilled a poetic trail of lyrics upon the
pavements. Each poem represents different
elements of human wisdom, including
empathy, compassion, passion, equality, and
our ability to love. This unique collection of
stencils are shaped in the symbol of infinity,
to represent the idea that all human wisdom
and learning is continuous. Follow the 10
