Maniac Magee
Part Three
Pages 121-184
Everyday:
Reading: Each day in class we will read aloud a section of Maniac Magee. That same night your
homework is to re-read the same section that we read in class. ‘Why do we have to do
that?’
you ask. You have to do that because on the second reading you will glean better understanding.
Remember this counts as your 20 minutes of reading.
Summary Facts: While you re-read each chapter write down three important facts that
occur in the chapter. These important facts should be written in complete sentences.
Vocabulary: While reading Maniac Magee, collect at least three new vocabulary
words each day we read. Record the words on your bookmark and make a guess at
their meanings.
Vocabulary Part Three: On Wednesday choose two words from your bookmark and
create a “Word of Wisdom” card for one of them and a sentence strip for the other.
Word of Wisdom: Your card must include the word, your definition, the root word, if
there is one, the type of word it is, and a sentence using the word correctly and an
illustration that helps your audience to understand how the word was used in the book.
Be sure to use color and black pen for the illustration.
Sentence Strip: Your sentence strip must include the word, your definition, the root
word, if there is one, the type of word it is, and a sentence using the word correctly.
There is a template on Google templates for you to use.
Bellowing: Shouting in a loud and deep voice.
Root word: Bellow (verb)
Sentence: The father was bellowing for his son to
come in for dinner.
Shimmering and Glimmering:
Please locate one section of the text that your classmates might like to hear read aloud. In your reader’s
notebook please write down where the passage is located—page number, paragraph number- and write
down why you chose this passage. Was it important to the story? Was it surprising? Does it create an
image? Did it make you laugh? Was it well written? Was it funny, sad, or informative? Did it make you
think? Why did this passage speak to you? Be on the look out for shimmering and glimmering
metaphors and similes. What do they tell you about the scene they are in? Use your post notes to mark
them. These will be shared in class.
This time be sure that your response to your shimmer and glimmer is written as a short paragraph.
Literature Questions: Choose three of the following questions to answer in complete
sentences. Most of these questions will need a short paragraph to completely answer them so
DON’T just write one sentence.
1. How does Maniac smooth over the rather embarrassing situation with John McNab and Russell and
Piper?
2. Describe the McNab household. Would you choose to visit them? Why or why not?
3. Why would the McNab family be a difficult one to have as your own? Why or why not?
4. What smelled so bad to Maniac at the end of Chapter 39? Explain.
5. Was Mars Bar Thompson’s discomfort at Fort McNab appropriate? Why or Why not?
6. Describe the “appleskin hours”.
7. What do you think will happen to Maniac after the end of the book?
