During the fall campaign he earned two top-10 finishes and has the team’s lowest scoring average at 71.08. UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE 2008 SPRING OUTLOOK STRONG FALL GIVES DEFENDING CHAMPION VOLS MOMENTUM HEADING INTO SPRING As the defending SEC champions, the Tennessee men’s golf team has high expectations heading into the spring half of the 2007-08 season. And after a strong fall season, there is no reason to doubt that the Volunteers will be able to defend their title. Tennessee started out the fall season with a fifthplace finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, Sept. 14-16. They followed that up with an eighth-place finish at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct.1. Next on the schedule for the Vols was the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges where the Vols won their first tournament of the 2006-07 season. This year, Tennessee finished tied for fifth as a team but junior Chris Paisley took home the medalist honors along with setting a course and tournament record with his second-round 8-under-par 64. As a result of their finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships, Tennessee was invited to compete at the Calloway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championships in Greensboro, Ga., Oct. 28-30. The Vols’ fifth place finish was highlighted by a 4-1 victory over No. 1 ranked Georgia in the final round. The Vols also upset No. 6 Oklahoma State in the first round by the score of 3-2. “We are very excited and very proud. It was great to see such a low score shot and I think it will give us a great deal of confidence going into the spring.” The Volunteers wrapped up their fall season in record fashion as they won the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate with the lowest three-round team score since 1980, a 64-under-par 800. The Vols fired a school-record 27-under-par 261 in the final round to secure their victory. Senior Charlie Ford earned himself his first collegiate win as he tied for medalist honors. In addition, Ford’s 54-hole total of 200 is the lowest 54-hole total in UT history. “It was my first win in college so I was excited about that,” Ford said. “Even thought it was only a co-championship, I am very happy to have won. I struggled a lot on the first day, and I had a really good finish just to shoot a couple under. And (the second tound) was probably one of the best rounds of my life. “It was not that easy of a golf course, I just played really well. I was pretty delighted to come out cochampion.” These were not the only records to fall. Sophomore David Holmes set a Turtle Bay course record and set the new 18-hole record for UT with his 10-under-par 62. Junior Chris Paisley and freshman Robin Wingardh also set new career marks with 54hole totals of 202. Tennessee hopes to build on this success and feed off this momentum as they head into the spring. “We are very excited and very proud,” coach Kelson said. “It was great to see such a low score shot and I think it will give us a great deal of confidence going into the spring.” As usual the Volunteers will be playing in some of the top tournaments in the country this season. The spring kicks off in Tucson, Ariz., where the team will make their second appearance in the PING/Arizona Intercollegiate. The event will take place at Arizona National, Jan. 28-29. Three weeks later the Vols travel to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., for the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. The tournament, held at Junior Chris Paisley earned his first collegiate victory at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Sawgrass Country Club, Feb. 17-19, is annually considered one of the top tournaments bringing in teams ranked annually in the top-25. Tennessee’s third tournament of the season sends the team out to California where they will compete in the USC Collegiate Invitational. The event takes place March 3-4 and is held at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Last year the Vols earned a third-place finish. After returning from California, both of UT’s final two regular-season tournaments take place in the state of Georgia. The first of which takes place in Statesboro, Ga. The Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational takes place March 14-16 at Forest Heights Country Club. As per usual, the tournament will feature a number of top SEC teams giving the Vols a preview of what they will face at the 2008 SEC Championships. The final tournament of the regular season is the Adminstaff/Augusta State Invitational, April 4-6, at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Postseason play begins for Tennessee April 18-20, at the SEC Championships. The tournament will again be held in Sea Island, Ga. This marks the eighth year in a row the tournament will be held there. As defending SEC champions, the Vols will look to keep their ground as one of the top golf programs in the southeast. NCAA regional competition is set for May 15-17. The East Regional will be held at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. Tennessee finished fifth at last year’s Central Regional. The top 10 teams from each region then advance to the NCAA Championships at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue University will be the host for this year’s event May 28-31. The hopes are high for the Vols this season but the talent level seems to be in line for another championship season. Beginning his tenth season as the squad’s chief, Kelson has proven that he is key to the golf program’s continued success. The 2006-07 season was one filled with hard work and dedicated that would pay off in a big way. The team brought home the third SEC title in school history as they were crowned the 2007 SEC Champions for the first time in 17 years. At the event, Tennessee finished with three players in the top-10, including two tied for second. "The coaches are very proud of this team. We set this goal at the beginning of the year and have worked hard at achieving this goal," said Kelson. "They paid the price to be successful and they deserve to win this championship...their efforts, desire and their great team chemistry were a big part of our win." Their win at the SEC Championships led to a plethora of well deserved awards as the 2007 SEC Men’s Golf Awards were announced. Kelson was awarded with his first SEC Coach of the Year award for guiding this team to the title. Philip Pettitt earned First Team All-SEC honors while Charlie Ford and Chris Paisley were named to the Second-Team AllSEC. Winning the SEC Championship and a fifth place finish at the NCAA Central Regional gave the Volutneers 11 top-10 finishes and two tournament championships for the season. The first tournament championship came during the year’s fall schedule at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate played at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn., Oct. 14-15, 2006. "I am extremely proud of how the team played and competed," Kelson said. "It is a huge win for our program. We can really build on this. This one meant a great deal." As coach, Kelson led Tennessee to a tournament championship in the fall of 1998 at the Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas, its first title since 1996. With his instruction, six golfers posted personal collegiate bests, and he also led sophomore Matt McWilliams and freshman Andrew Black to individual titles. The linksters’ individual victories were the Vols’ first since 1996. Kelson, 44, is from Dallas, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1987. He earned a master’s from the University of Florida in exercise and sports science in 1992. Kelson coached the only Division I sport at Augusta State University. He led the Jaguars to four appearances in the NCAA Championships from 1993-96 and five appearances in the NCAA East Regionals. He guided his teams to 32 top-five finishes in 57 regular-season tournaments. Under Kelson’s leadership, the Jaguars won 11 tournaments during his seven years as coach with at least one team championship every year he coached at ASU. Kelson was named NCAA Division I-North Coach of the Year in 1993. Prior to Augusta State, Kelson served as the assistant coach at the University of Florida under former U.S. Amateur champion Buddy Alexander. Kelson helped recruit several of the golfers who helped the Gators finish runner-up at the 1993 NCAA Championships. "Working under Buddy Alexander was an invaluable experience for me," Kelson said. "Buddy is regarded nationally as one of the finest coaches in collegiate golf, and his ability to relate to his players in a positive manner is something I will always try to emulate." Along with Alexander, Kelson has also worked with some of the most highly regarded teaching professionals in the world, including Conrad Rehling, Eddie Merrins, Bob Toski, Wally Armstrong, Chuck Cooke, Denis Pugh, Ernie Vaderson and Michael Shannon. Kelson spent a year on the mini-tour in the Orlando area before assuming his position at Florida. He served as Alexander’s assistant for three years before accepting the head coaching position at ASU. Kelson also served as the assistant athletic director for compliance at Augusta. Along with Kelson’s studies at the University of Alabama, he also made time to compete on the links for the Crimson Tide for two-and-a-half years. He transferred to Alabama after his sophomore year from the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of the strong Sooner program that competed in the 1983 NCAA Championships. His achievements on the course include winning the 1983 Oklahoma State Amateur and a third-place finish at the 1987 Bermuda Amateur, in addition to participating in the 1982 U.S. Golf Association Amateur. Kelson has high hopes for the Volunteers. His ability to coach the players emotionally, as well as physically, is a perfect recipe for success. PETERSEN MIKE HAMILTON President (Cal State Los Angeles 1970) Director of Athletics (Clemson 1985) In President John Petersen's fourth year at the University of Tennessee, UT is enjoying positive momentum in enrollment, private support, economic development, and federal research. Last year, Petersen presided over aggressive statewide fundraising efforts that resulted in $157 million, up from $80 million in 2004. New federal grants related to the nation's priorities in homeland security, alternative fuel sources, and emerging science and technologies led to $40 million in congressional funds in 2005, up from $18 million in 2004. Petersen and his staff have hammered out a university strategic plan that focuses on student access, student success, research and scholarship, outreach, economic development and globalization. Petersen is chairman of UT-Battelle, the partnership that manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. He is closely engaged in maximizing the intellectual and economic benefits of the university's partnership with the nation's largest science and energy lab. Petersen became the 23rd president of UT July 1, 2004. He was provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Connecticut for four years before coming to Tennessee. As president, he is the chief executive officer of the statewide UT system, which includes campuses at Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Martin; the Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, and two statewide organizations, the Institute of Agriculture and the Institute for Public Service. Petersen's earlier career included experience at several public universities. Prior to his appointment at Connecticut, he was dean of the College of Science and professor of chemistry at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, from 1994 to 2000. Before that he was a faculty member, head of chemistry, and associate dean for research in the College of Sciences at Clemson University (1980-93) and assistant professor of chemistry at Kansas State University (1975-80). Petersen received the Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara and the B.S. in chemistry from California State. He and his wife, Carol, are the parents of two grown children, Melissa and Andrew. Carol Petersen is a former teacher. When Mike Hamilton was named athletics director for the University of Tennessee in July 2003, he established "five core values" to guide his tenure as AD: 1. Complying with NCAA and SEC rules: Hamilton knows the importance of ensuring that the University of Tennessee is winning the right way. Earlier this year, he was named to the NCAA Academics, Eligibility and Compliance Cabinet. 2. Competing for championships: Hamilton is focused on ensuring UT has the facilities it needs to compete for championships. 3. Running a financially sound operation: Hamilton has placed a special emphasis on reducing expenses to ensure that the University of Tennessee can continue to be one of the handful of athletics departments in the country that receives no funds from state subsidies or taxes. During Hamilton's tenure as athletics director, operating expenditures have decreased more than $3 million, while giving to athletics has increased by 50 percent -- from $20.6 million in fiscal year 2003 to $30 million in fiscal year 2006. 4. Graduating student-athletes: In 2005-06, 88 current and former Vols and Lady Vols graduated from the University of Tennessee. This group boasts 47 SEC honor roll and 71 Thornton Athletics Student Life Center honor roll recognitions. 5. Continuing a pattern of service to the community and state, with the athletics department as a positive role model: While Hamilton is focused on ensuring the financial viability of athletics, he also is committed to giving back to the university. Last year, the athletics department contributed more than $23 million to the university in some fashion Hamilton previously served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations, earning that promotion in September 2002, and has been on the UT staff since 1992. The 44-year-old Hamilton, who grew up in Brevard, N.C., served as assistant director of the Deacon Club at Wake Forest University before joining the Vols. He earlier served as a graduate assistant in fundraising at his alma mater, Clemson University. Hamilton and his wife, the former Elizabeth Merrill, also from Brevard, are parents of a daughter, Madison, and a son, Matthew. 2007-08 MEN’S GOLF Associate AD Compliance/ Senior Administrator for Golf NANCY COWAN Administrative Assistant KERRY HOWLAND Asst. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Faced with the task of conference realignment after competing with 10 members since 1966, the SEC welcomed the University of Arkansas on Aug. 1, 1990, and the University of South Carolina on Sept. 25, 1990. Joining charter members Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, on July 1, 1991, Arkansas and South Carolina became the first schools added in conference history. The first SEC champions were crowned in 1933 in baseball, basketball, football and outdoor track. The league’s inaugural championship event was a basketball tournament in Atlanta Feb. 24-28, 1933. Records show the first men’s team title for cross country was awarded in 1935, while golf and swimming were added in 1937. The league later began hosting championships in tennis (1953) and indoor track (1957). Last year, the SEC continued to solidify its position as the nation’s premier intercollegiate athletic conference by capturing seven NCAA team titles during the 2006-07 academic year. The SEC produced national championships in men’s tennis (Georgia), football (Florida), women’s outdoor track and field (Auburn), men’s swimming and diving (Auburn) and women’s swimming and diving (Auburn), men’s basketball (Florida), women’s basketball (Tennessee) and gymnastics (Georgia). The SEC currently regulates nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports: Men baseball, basketball, football, golf, swimming, tennis and track (cross country, indoor and outdoor). Women - basketball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (cross country, indoor and outdoor) and volleyball. The past few seasons have been a high point for the Tennessee golf program academically. Seven Volunteer golfers earned Academic All-SEC honors for 2007. James Brannen, Charlie Ford, Philip Pettitt, and Ben Spickard along with former Vols John Brannen, Jonathan Mount, and Tino Weiss garnered this honor. The selection of seven Vols breaks the program record for most SEC Academic Honor Roll members in one year. The previous mark was five in 2001 and 2004. From 1985-2006, 66 Tennessee golfers have been selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. In 1997, the Vols placed two squad members on the Academic All-America team. Seniors Boomer Erick and Tim Turpen were on the 1997 CoSIDA Academic All-America team. In 2007, senior Vol Tino Weiss was named to the 2007 Cleveland Golf Academic-All America team.
