If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families. If we want to spread joy, we need for every family to have joy.” – Mother Teresa Dear Parents and Friends of St. George Catholic School, As you are aware things are very busy here at St. George Catholic School. I continue to be in awe of the support and dedication of our community. Our first term report cards will be sent on February 2, 2017. Interviews will be hosted on February 9th. Our March Break will be from March 13th to March 17th this year. On February 20th we will be celebrating Family Day. Family Day reminds us all to focus our thoughts, energies and time to those closest to us—the members of our own families. Throughout our busy lives filled with learning, teaching and working, it is easy to allow ourselves to lose sight of what should always be most important—our children, parents, spouses, siblings and other loved ones. It is also easy to lose sight of the important role we play within the family of God—in our own parish families. It is my hope and prayer that you will take time during this day to continue to discover the beauty and gifts of family. I would like to share with you a beautiful prayer for families written by Pope Francis called “Prayer to the Holy Family”, that is included in this newsletter. Prayer to the Holy Family Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer. Amen. February 2017 Newsletter KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE Computers have become part of our everyday lives and keeping children safe online is a concern for parents everywhere. Here are a few helpful tips: * Keep the computer in a common area and not in the child’s bedroom. This way, you can monitor your child’s computer use. * Remind your child that the internet is a public place and never post inappropriate pictures or make comments they would not make in person. * Remind them that what is posted online cannot be totally erased. * Make sure that protection features of websites are activated. There are tools available through your Internet Provider to help ensure that children are safe online. * Become familiar with the sites your child visits. Ensure the sites they visit and the games they play are appropriate. * Limit screen time so your child continues to play with friends, interact with family and develops other interests. Encourage your child to talk to you about anything concerning that they may encounter online. Have a family agreement or set of rules for internet use. To learn more, visit websites on child safety such as: http://www.getcybersafe.gc.ca/cnt/prtctyrslf/prtctn-fml/chld-sf-en.aspx http://mediasmarts.ca/ It’s easy just to watch TV or text or go online. But what’s that doing to me? Are there better things to try? I could turn off all of my screens And take myself outside. Go for a walk, go fly a kite Or take my bike for a ride. I sit 6 hours at school and sleep another 9. So screen time should be limited, No more than 2 a day would really be just fine. Recreational screen time should be limited to no more than 2 hours per day. http://www.csep.ca/CMFiles/Guidelines/CSEP_SBGuidelines_child_en.pdf February 2017 Sun Mon Tue Wed 1 Thu 2 Fri Sat 3 4 10 11 Report Cards Go Home 5 6 7 8 New Book Day 12 13 Anti Bullying Speaker Leroy Hibbert P.M. 19 20 Rosary 16 17 18 21 23 24 25 22 NO SCHOOL 27 Parent Teacher Interviews 3:30-7:30 p.m. 14 15 Valentines Day!
