GETTING AN INTERVIEW
Receiving an interview opportunity or job offer from an employer
is a limited opportunity only given to a few candidates.

Always follow-up with that employer if you choose not to interview or decide
to decline a job offer. Employers respect that candidates may choose another
employer, however, notification of your decision is expected.
Not responding to an employer’s job offer leaves a bad impression of you as a
candidate and may impact future opportunities.
At any time, if you have concerns or questions regarding the interview, job offer
or acceptance deadline, do not hesitate to contact the employer. People and
resources are in place to assist prospective candidates.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Employers perform background checks on all hiring candidates.

It is very important that candidates be honest when sharing information. If you
have a past situation in your background and are honest about that circumstance
on your application, an employer like Ford still may offer employment.
If you withhold background information that the employer discovers, an
employer like Ford may decline to offer employment. Give the employer a
chance to evaluate the background situation and how it affects your candidacy.
If you have a new situation between the time your application was submitted
and when you start employment, it is better to share that information yourself
than to have it discovered and risk having your job offer rescinded.
MEDICAL SCREENING
A key part of the hiring process is the medical screening. This
includes a drug test.

Don’t let a drug test be the roadblock between you and the professional
opportunities that your GPA, internship experience and overall professional
profile will provide you.
Although some substances have been recently legalized in various states, their
appearance in your drug test may still have an impact on your hiring results.
WHEN LOOKING FOR A JOB...
Research the best time of year to look for a job in your industry. 72% of our
employers hire employees in the fall.
Find keywords in the application from your prospective employer, and use
them as you refine your resume. The employer’s recruiting software will
see the connections and flag your resume for further review.
Complete the online application before contacting employers.
Use the NSBE Career Center! Doing so early gives employers more time to
prepare to talk with you at the Career Fair.
Remember that government contractors may only receive
your resume online.
Monitor your social media profile! Make sure you don’t
have public images or content that would distract or,
worse yet, deter hiring managers or recruiters from
wanting to hire you. Don’t provide red flags for recruiters
and hiring managers.
