A WORD FROM
THE SKIPPER
The 2016 season is now
behind us, and the drive and
the ambition going into 2017
is greater than ever.
All small village cricket clubs
fall upon hard and difficult
times in this increasingly
hectic world, but Newenden
CC are bucking this trend.
Managing to turn out quality
sides capable of matching
and more often then not
beating larger league clubs, shows that we still have that passion of playing
Sunday village cricket at arguably the prettiest ground as well as the oldest
in Kent & Sussex, as well as maintaining that magic that is NCC.
We know things change, and we all reminisce of the good old days at the
club, however we still have playing the likes of Bourne, Rummery and
Smith who are all part of the furniture. Along with the newer families
making roots, the Jones’, Pipers’, Simpsons’ et al. and with the increasing
popularity of the junior academy, the success of the club is in safe hands.
We also welcomed back Phil ‘run master’ Morris who has been
instrumental in not only player recruitment, but also the putting together
of the club’s inaugural (and highly successful) Family Fun Day.
Our thanks go to all those who run the club, the
committee, junior squad, and of course our
groundsman.

JUNIOR FIXTURES 2017
Newenden youth coaching, which is for school Year 1 (ages 5-6) to school
Year 8 (ages 12-13), will kickoff on Sunday 23rd April and will end on a date
to be determined in August.
Sessions will start at 10am for everyone and last 90 minutes for U10s and
2 hours for U13s.
We’re batting for Newenden ...
but otherwise we enjoy our garden.
Why don’t you join our team for a day?
16 acres of private gardens open to the public
Hole Park, Rolvenden 01580 241 344

We will be aiming to arrange our league matches for Saturdays to ensure
our players who play for their district/county on a Sunday are available for
these. We are currently waiting on details of who will be in our league to
then organise dates/times. We’ll slot some friendlies into Sundays once all
league fixtures are in the diary as appropriate.
A full schedule of training dates and fixtures for all age groups will be
circulated by email as soon as possible once all details are available.
Once the season kicks off, we will also send out a monthly schedule summary
at the beginning of each month and a weekly confirmation of what is
happening each weekend to ensure it’s all clear!

JUNIOR RUN DOWN
First and foremost the 2016 season was a swansong for James Simpson and Adam Piper. Running the
admin and turning up Sunday after Sunday, latterly without even having their own kids in the squad,
has been above and beyond the call of duty and they are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude from
the club and parents alike. A big thank you to the Piper and Simpson boys for helping out too - it’s
invaluable for the kids to have young cricketing role models to emulate rather than taking their lead
solely from the new crop of fusty cantankerous midlife-crisis-waiting-to-happen coaches.
Thanks as ever needs to go to our tireless groundsman Bourne Senior for providing the pitches in
what is the most idyllic bucolic setting for junior cricket.
With the U13 contingent now moving onwards and upwards it’s also the end of an era as names like
Plugge, Watson and Moore leave the junior player ranks. However if the relevant Dads continue to
need a place to have a hungover bacon sandwich on a Sunday and read The Times sport section then
they know where we are.
A new rogues gallery of coaches now step up to the plate. Richard ‘Reg’ Gutteridge has some game,
Al Durtnall is our drill sergeant, Matt Hall as ever is Mr Enthusiasm and Doctor Taggart’s
pitchside/bedside manner is no-nonsense.
Coach of the year was Alex Preston who took on what has historically been the cat herding
responsibility of leading the U9s (which includes feral 5 year olds) with astonishing gusto. He had the
blighters on a string for the season. Thanks also to James Edmondson, Paul Routledge and Ross
Andrews for their help with the rugrats.
Results in the junior fixtures were the veritable curate’s egg. Getting a full side out was always
challenging given the size of the squad and there were some very young players filling by necessity in
every game. There were close U13 Home and Away losses to Linton Park and a pasting by the highly
impressive U11 Kent girls. Highlights included a comfortable U13 victory over Rye and an U13 season
ending triumph as hosts in the Kwik Cricket event with the assistance of an immaculately positioned
tree in the final over. Spielberg could not have scripted it better.
Performance of the season has to go to plucky Ned Taggart, aged 8, who bowled beautifully taking
wickets and got some runs too in an U13 game - definitely one for the future. It was also superb to see
Reg and Harry Gutteridge both playing together in a Sunday senior fixture or two although it all proved
too much for Reg’s chocolate calf muscle. A bit more crossover/ interaction between the senior and
junior sections should be an aim for the upcoming season.
The prospects for 2017 are exciting with an important caveat. We have
joined a local U12 league now there are more coaching pairs of hands.
However we need to expand the depth of our squad because a few
conflicting family commitments on any given Sunday means we are
scratching around for a team. I would urge anyone who reads this to act as
marketeers for the junior section spreading the word to all those with kids
from Year 8 down. We will be hitting school noticeboards and the Wealden
Ad too. The aim is very much to try and grow the junior section by a
sensible amount this year.
Roll on the 2017 season!

HISTORY OF NCC
Many places lay claim to being the place
where cricket was first played. But Newenden
has a very special claim, one which is
recognised by no less an authority than the
Wisden Cricketer’s Almanack.
In March 1301 (counting the New Year from
January, which wasn’t necessarily the case in
those days), the King of England, Edward I, spent some time in Newenden. It appears from records of
his correspondence that he stayed in the village on several dates in the early 14th century, possibly
visiting old friends while on the way to inspect the progress of New Winchelsea. Newenden was then
an important market and road stagepost, which perhaps explains why tradition tells of there being
sixteen inns in the village. The White Hart proudly carries on as the sole survivor, though the oldest
part of the present building only dates from the 16th century.
On this particular occasion, the King was accompanied by his eldest surviving son, known as Edward,
Prince of Wales, who was later to ascend to the throne as Edward II. He was the first English royal to
bear the title Prince of Wales, in commemoration of his father having finally settled the Welsh question
in his own favour.
The Royal household expended some money, noted in the King’s Wardrobe accounts, which is the
term used for general domestic expenditure, for Prince Edward to play a game of creag at Newenden,
on 10 March. If we accept, with Wisden, that creag is an early form of the word “cricket”, then this is
indeed the very first time the game is mentioned in recorded history.
No further written mention of the game has been found until at least 250 years later, which is taken by
critics as a reason to discount Newenden’s claim. Nonetheless, although cricket may not have become
a widely spread pastime for adults until the 17th century, historians generally agree that the game did
originate in the Weald, and that it was played by children for centuries before it was formalised and
entered history in anything like its modern form.

Some say that creag is just a variant of the Gaelic word craic, meaning fun in general. But they would
have to explain why Saxon peasants and their Norman overlords were still using Celtic words over 700
years after the old Britons had been chased out of Kent.

Finally, while 10 March may seem impossibly early for cricket, it should be noted first that this date is
according to the Julian calendar, which by this time was seriously out of synch with the solar year. So
in our calendar, this date corresponds to 18 March. Also, the climate of the 13th century had been
particularly clement, even if it was now deteriorating into the “Little Ice Age”. For instance, the great
storm of 1287, which finally claimed Old Winchelsea, thus necessitating Edward’s visits to our corner
of England, may have been a sign of rapid climate change. However, in 1301, March could still have
been significantly milder than the springs we experience now.
So, never mind those that find fault with our history. It is quite possible that Prince Edward, then almost 17
years old, really did play cricket on a sunny field below the then brand new church of St. Peter’s. A royal
start for cricket, with village boys and others from his retinue (including his recent, later infamous new friend
Piers Gaveston) that spring day some 700 years ago? Certainly, we in Newenden like to think so!
