ALS: Rediscovering the profession of arms

When thinking about Airman
Leadership School, what thoughts
come to mind?
Many Airmen may think of professional military education as boring,
a box to check or a waste of time.
For me, ALS was none of these things.
ALS is a five-week course that prepares
senior airmen, new staff sergeants and
sister service rank equivalents for official
supervisory and rating duties. Attending
this leadership school in residence is a
requirement for all Airmen either upon
successfully testing for promotion or upon
reaching 48 months time in service.
As a mandated stepping stone, to the
uninitiated, the training may come along
as just another training requirement
on the way to a long-awaited promotion. It turns out it is more than that.
In all honesty, I was apprehensive
as I took my first steps into the classroom. Little did I know my perspective
would drastically change in just a few
short weeks.
The first few days were a blur. We
spent the majority of our time learning
the rules, getting a feel for the curriculum and sizing up our classmates. After
everything was laid out by the commandant and instructors – it was ‘game on.’
The 192-hour course, spread across
24 academic days, is divided into three
major curriculum areas that support
the course objective and focus on developing leadership abilities, building
effective communication and the profession of arms. Classes are also required to positively contribute to their
local community as well as create a
legacy piece to enrich the schoolhouse
for future generations of students.
The weeks quickly were consumed with
academic work. We participated in group
discussions, wrote papers, took written
tests, stumbled through public speaking,
braved typhoon rains during our community project and, more importantly, bonded as service members and future NCOs.
I learned quite a bit about what is
expected of an NCO and leader, while
also learning more about how to meet
those expectations. Studying leadership
traits in our diverse group of Airmen and
Sailors helped broaden my perspective
when it came to the profession of arms,
something I think is vital for today’s
leaders to understand and practice.
According to our curriculum, to
be part of the military profession of
arms is to be a skilled practitioner of,
or professional in the art of warfare.
The profession of arms is a unique
profession, whose customer base
spans the sum of our great nation.
After reading the paragraph again,
I was shocked to realize I still didn’t
fully grasp what this meant. As a public affairs Airman, I took it upon myself
to know as much as I could about the
Air Force mission and our polices and
tenets, so I could better share Airmen’s stories with the rest of the
world. However, the true meaning of
“the profession of arms” eluded me.
In layman’s terms, the profession of
arms is the basic understanding that
each member brings their own unique
skills to the fight. With this definition, it’s
a fairly easy concept to understand, but
one that may be difficult to communicate.
So much is changing these days. With a

forced distribution and the operations
tempo, it’s hard to focus at times. It’s
even harder to stay positive and for some,
see how our daily efforts fuel the fight.
The 36th Wing’s mission is to provide the president sovereign options to
decisively employ airpower across the
entire spectrum of engagement. It may
be difficult to discern every individual’s
contribution to this daunting task.
As reflected in the various occupational badges in our classroom, we
all participate in the same fight.
Without force support squadron Airmen, for instance, the dining facility and
gym wouldn’t open. There would be no
one to provide vital combat and community support by delivering superior
morale, welfare, recreation, manpower
and personnel program services.
Without the finance flight we would
have to manage our own pay and accounts while continuing our daily tasks.
The list of services goes on and
in short, it would quickly overwhelm other career fields to cope
with the additional workload.
Having our Navy brothers and sisters
in the class also provided a comforting reality. This reality is that although
we are different services, we all are
NCOs, we all have troops in some form
or fashion and we are all leaders.
The joint leadership school experience
was neither boring nor a waste of time.
Because of our productive class dynamic
and our skilled teaching staff, I was able
to walk away with a greater understanding of what it takes to be a supervisor in today’s service and rediscovered
my place in the profession of arms.
Each and every person plays a vital role in our military and has an
impact on our mission, and as a photojournalist I feel blessed to be in the
career field that allows me a firsthand
look at the Air Force’s missions.
After ALS, I can’t wait to share the
Airman, Sailor, Soldier, Marine and
Coast Guardsman’s story in a way
that highlights their unique contribution to the security of our nation.

walk-in mammograms available at
wilford hall, jbsa-randolph clinics
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
To show their support and raise awareness, the
mammography departments at the Wilford Hall
Ambulatory Surgical Center and JBSA-Randolph
have set aside walk-in days for patients to receive an annual screening mammogram.
The walk-in time at the Wilford Hall Mammography Department is Oct. 23, from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m. The JBSA-Randolph Clinic will be
open for walk-ins every Friday from 7:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. throughout October. On these days,
patients may be seen without a doctor’s referral.
In order for patients to walk-in on a selfreferral basis for their annual mammogram,
they must have:
- No breast symptoms, for example, pain, a
lump, etc.
- A designated primary care manager.
- Prior mammograms within the San Antonio
Military Health System. If prior mammograms
were performed at an outside facility, women
are asked to bring a copy of their mammograms
(CD or films) with them to their exam.
The American College of Radiology recommends that women begin annual screening
mammograms at age 40. Women with firstdegree relatives, who have a history of breast
cancer or a positive BRCA-gene mutation; or a
history of radiation to the chest, may benefit
from earlier screenings and should consult their
primary care manager.
The 59th MDW Mammography Department
always accepts patients on a self-referral basis for their screening mammograms, with the
same conditions listed above. To make an appointment, call 925-XRAY (9729).

rated selection board results
A total of 189 men and women from across
America were selected for an officer’s commission, officials announced Sept. 28.
Air Force Recruiting Service officials considered 272 applications as part of the Officer
Training School rated selection board 15OT03.
With the board’s selection rate of 69.49 percent,
189 applicants were selected to serve as Air
Force officers. Forty-five of the 189 selectees
were enlisted members and they’ve earned the
chance to attend OTS and trade their stripes for
gold bars as second lieutenants.
As part of the selection process, board
members review both objective and subjective
factors.
Objectively, the board considers each applicant’s academic discipline, grade point average

President praises retiring Dempsey,
incoming Joint Chiefs Chairman Dunford

In an armed forces full-honors retirement ceremony,
Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey closed out 41 years of service and Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. succeeded him as the highest ranking U.S. military officer Sept. 25.
Dempsey swore in Dunford as chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer, at
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va.
President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Ash
Carter were among the dignitaries who attended today’s
retirement and change of responsibility ceremony.
“We all owe this great country our very best and our
fellow citizens our very best,” Dempsey said. “It was humbling to accept this job four years ago and it’s humbling to
relinquish it today.”
Dunford said he was humbled for the opportunity to
represent the men and women in uniform.
“They are a true national treasure. My focus in the coming days will be to provide them with the leadership and
the support that they deserve,” he said.
Obama praised Dempsey for his vision for the military,
his moral fiber and deep commitment to American strength
and values.
Dempsey served during a time of many challenges, the
president said, and managed each one with “integrity and
foresight and care.” America has reassured its global allies, ended the combat mission in Afghanistan, and forged
new partnerships to fight terrorism, the president noted.
“We built a coalition that is combating ISIL in Iraq and
Syria and have we bolstered our cyber defenses. We helped
halt the spread of Ebola in West Africa,” Obama said. “None
of this would have been possible without Marty’s guidance
and leadership.”
Obama described Dempsey as “one of the finest men that
I know.” He picked Dempsey to be chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff and previously chief of staff of the Army, he
said, because the general had the “steady hand” needed in
the moment of transition.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter said that before Dempsey
became chairman, he was already a proven military leader
who led the 1st Armored Division during “difficult days,”
returned to reconstitute the Iraqi army and had been chief
of staff of the Army.
“Every decision the military leader makes, large or
small, touches the lives of our troops. It touches the lives
of countless families, it changes the nature of the world
and the destiny of the country,” Carter said.
“For the men and women who operate during a time of
rapid change and uncertainty, this is the constant weight
and responsibility of leadership,” Carter said.
Dempsey said it has been his privilege to serve the nation. The men and women who serve the nation are “most
precious treasure,” he said.

“Our nation and its armed forced remain the world’s

Dempsey said. “The generation that is now blessed to serve
will do its duty and will ensure that our nation remains
strong.”
Dunford commended Dempsey for his service to the nation.
“We’re all indebted to Gen. Marty Dempsey for his extraordinary leadership, commitment and service, and on a
personal note, for many years he has been a great friend,
mentor and role model,” Dunford said.
Dempsey forever honors the 132 soldiers who lost their
lives under his command in Iraq, Obama said, explaining
how Dempsey has a box that contains each soldier’s picture
and story.
“And on top of the box are three words: make it matter,” Obama said.
“Every morning, Marty places three of the cards in his
pocket so that every moment as chairman, every meeting,
every trip, every decision, every troop review, every moment of every day, some of those fallen heroes are with
him,” the president said.
Dempsey, in closing his speech said, “To all who will
continue to serve after, I ask only this in parting: make it
matter.”

JBSA, community partners establish center and Rideshare program

Partnership leaders signed a new
memorandum of understanding to
formally establish the JBSA Commuter
Center and unveil the first-ever
JBSA RideShare program during a
ceremony Oct. 6 at the Port Authority
of San Antonio offices.
The JBSA Virtual Commuter Center
will serve as the primary source
of information regarding the JBSA
Mass Transportation Benefit Program,
which encourages the use of alternative transportation options with
monetary incentives.
“The JBSA vCommuter Center
website will be a one stop shop for
anyone at JBSA considering alternative transportation,” James Williams,
deputy director for the 502nd Logistics Readiness Squadron, said. “The
mass transportation benefit program provides several opportunities for our employees to be environmentally friendly, helping us

become more successful at reducing
our collective carbon footprint.”
The JBSA vCommuter Center was
created through a partnership between
the base, vRide, the Alamo Area Council of Governments, VIA Metropolitan
Transit and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Together, these partners will offer several alternative means of transportation to the JBSA community, including
the RideShare program, through the
JBSA vCommuter Center website at
http://www.jbsa.mil/Resources/JBSARideShare.aspx.
The first part of this mass transportation benefit program is the RideShare program, a vanpool system that
links JBSA employees with selected
vanpool providers.
Once an individual applies for the
program, they select a vanpool provider through VIA or vRide, after which
they will be assigned a vanpool based
on location and availability. Additionally, participants receive a monetary
incentive for using the program.
According to officials, each established vanpool takes anywhere from
four to 15 personal vehicles off the
road, reducing automotive emissions
and helping to minimize the stress
individuals may feel during their
commute. Currently, only 3 percent of
eligible JBSA employees participate
in the program.
RideShare will be one of several
alternatives within the mass transportation benefit program which will
eventually include specific processes
for use of a bus, vanpool, train or light
rail system.
“We are very proud to be working
with our incredible community partners on this important traffic reduction and environmentally responsible
initiative,” Brig. Gen. Bob LaBrutta,

San Antonio commander, said. “Utilizing alternative forms of transportation will not only decrease congestion on the highways and other traffic
arteries in/around San Antonio, it
will also have a positive environmental impact as we reduce emissions.

as ‘Military City USA.’
The Commuter Center and Rideshare program is simply the right
thing to do, and we appreciate the
teamwork and support of everyone
involved.”
The JBSA Community Partnership
Initiative works to increase the
efficiency of JBSA installations partnerships with both public and private
organizations.
These working relationships are
referred to as P4 (Public to Public,
Public to Private) partnerships and allow military installations to join with
nearby public and private entities to
consolidate resources while reducing
the financial burden.

The Defense Health Agency achieved a
significant milestone Oct. 1 as the agency
reached full operating capability.
Dr. Jonathan Woodson, assistant secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, said
the journey toward greater jointness
reaches much further back than the two
years the DHA has been operational; it
covers the decades of improvements in
military medicine and the need to lay out
a path for the future.
“The delivery of high quality, accessible health care serves as the foundation
of a ready force – and the life-saving care
in the deployed environment is a force
multiplier,” said Woodson, “This system
services others throughout the world,
our allies and coalition partners, those
struck by natural disasters and needing
humanitarian assistance. The Defense
Health Agency is a critical enabler of this
global mission.”
Woodson expanded on the uniqueness
of the Military Health System; in particular, the mission of providing a force able
to go anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice.
“The challenge that we faced when
this process started remains the same
challenge for us today — how do we
sustain our system, keep our service
members medically ready, and keep our
medical staffs also ready in this changing world?” asked Woodson. “The DHA
offers the opportunity to accelerate the
joint operational success of the past decades to reduce variation, eliminate redundancy and create the conditions for
learning and continuous improvement.”
Air Force Lt. Gen. Douglas Robb, DHA
director, said the ceremony wasn’t just
about what his agency has done; it’s
about the approach for the future.
“In just two short years, we have already
done a great deal toward delivering on
our promise of providing a medically
ready force and ready medical force to
combatant commands in both peacetime
and wartime,” said Robb. “The fact that
we are here today is a testament to everyone in the Defense Health Headquarters—the Services and the DHA. Any success is shared success; working together
is not only necessary, but right.”
The DHA was awarded the Joint
Meritorious Unit Award from Secretary
of Defense Ashton B. Carter for exceptionally meritorious achievements since

Woodson thanked Robb, who will soon
move on to retirement, praising him as
a “warrior’s warrior” and for his “fullthroated and infectious enthusiasm for
greater jointness.” The assistant secretary also expressed his gratitude to the
entire DHA team for their work in reaching this milestone.
“Thank you for your determination,
for your perseverance, and for always
keeping your eyes on the target — an
integrated system of care in which we
share, learn and improve by working
closely together in service to everyone
in the Department of Defense,” said
Woodson, reminding everyone there’s
still much work ahead. “Today isn’t really about recognizing how far the Defense Health Agency has come in two
short years. It’s about the promise for
the future.”

Defender aids local cop in arrest

As a service member, one knows
there are truly no duty hours, as you
are on call 24 hours a day, if needed.
One security forces apprentice course
instructor took this charge to heart as
he assisted a local officer with arresting
an aggressive suspect.
While driving home after work
Sept. 22, Tech. Sgt. Daniel Wayt,
343rd Training Squadron Security
Forces Apprentice Course instructor,
saw a San Antonio police officer
attempting to subdue a suspect, but
was in distress. Wayt, concerned for the
safety of the officer, turned his vehicle
around to provide assistance.
“I saw the officer using his baton,
attempting to subdue the suspect, but
the suspect was hitting the officer in
the face,” said Wyat, who has been a
security forces defender for 13 years.
“The officer was able to get the suspect
on the ground by the time I could turn
around, but you could tell that the suspect was not going to go down easily.”
Using his training acquired as a defender, the Cambridge, Ohio, native
helped calm the suspect, after press-
ing on pressure points to disable him
temporarily. While he and the officer
were able to handcuff the individual,
the situation was not over yet as they
noticed a bystander who was getting
close to them.
“From that point, I told the bystander
to either get down or get back,” Wyat
said. “Later we found out that he was
the suspect’s cousin, so the situation
could have been extremely bad for the
officer if he had decided to get involved.”
After another squad car arrived
on scene, Wyat went to check on the
officer and see if he was ok.
“The officer was understandably
really worked up, but told me that before I got there, he had been fighting
with the guy for more than three minutes,” he said. “Three minutes in a fight
for your life is very daunting on any
human body. He told me he didn’t know
why I stopped, but he thanked me and
told me he owes me a big one.”
Upon properly arresting the suspect
and reading him his rights, the SAPD
officers ran the suspect' s name through
the system and found he had three felony warrants out for his arrest. Realizing
this, Wyat further understood why the
suspect was behaving so erratically and
aggressively and knew he helped stop a
potentially tragic situation.
“It wasn’t about trying to be recognized or anything,” he said. “The reason
I stopped is that with me being security
forces, if I was in a confrontation with
someone one-on-one and I wasn’t winning or I was in distress, I would want
someone to help me too. Here at the
Security Forces Academy, we impart to
Airmen that the ideal situation is two
officers for every suspect. This officer
was at a disadvantage.”
The ever-humble Wyat, who stands
more than six feet tall, doesn’t speak
about the incident as if he saved the
officer, but more so as a reminder
to himself that he has a duty to help
people, whether it be on or off base and
whether it’s convenient or not.
“My husband is a very good man
with a lot of integrity,” said Wayt’s wife,
Misty. “I wasn’t surprised when he told
me what happened. Our joke about it is
that he got to arrest the guy, but I got
to clean up the mess.”
The mess, which was the blood of
the suspect, speaks to the seriousness
of the altercation. While attempting to
fight the officer, the suspect fought so
hard that by the time Wyat arrived on

Misty, who is accustomed to hearing
some of the stories about the incidents
her husband has been involved in, says
he is dedicated to helping people and to
his job, mentioning that he was awarded Airman of the Year while stationed
in the Netherlands.
“I remember him having to chase
someone on foot for stealing thousands
of dollars’ worth of razors from the commissary,” she said with a laugh. “People
do strange things, but I know Daniel is
out there doing his job to the best of his
ability. It’s just what he does.”
Back at the security forces schoolhouse, Wyat continues to teach hand-tohand combative techniques to students,
knowing that one day, they might need
to use the skills to save their own, or
someone else’s life. He hopes they take
it serious enough to know how to step
in, when needed.
“As a defender, you don’t know
who you’re going to be getting into an
altercation with,” he said. “You have to
be there and be able to help someone
in need, because you will hope that
when you need it, someone will be there
for you.”

breeding program needs families to
foster puppies for three months.
Potential foster families need:
•time and patience to raise a
puppy age 12 weeks to six months,
•a stimulating and safe home
environment, and
•a desire to help raise a military
working dog.

Court-martial, crimes and punishments at Joint Base San Antonio
The Joint Base San Antonio Judge
Advocate General completed one Air
Force court-martial in the month of
August. The results of a court-martial are not final until the clemency
and/or appeals process is completed.

Tech. Sgt. Chad S. Lukkes, 342nd
Training Squadron, JBSA-Lackland,
was tried by a general court-martial consisting of a military judge
Aug. 11 at JBSA-Lackland. Lukkes
pled and was found guilty of three
specifications of false official statement (falsely claiming to have been
awarded a Purple Heart and an Army
Combat Action Badge) in violation of
Article 107, Uniform Code of Military Justice, and six specifications
of violation of the general article,
(improperly wearing a Purple Heart
and Army Combat Action Badge on
his uniform and lying to a reporter
about an injury and members of his
unit about receiving said awards) in
violation of Article 134, UCMJ. The
military judge sentenced Lukkes to
a reprimand, nine months confinement, and reduction to airman basic.
During the month of August, JBSA
Air Force commanders administered
16 non-judicial punishment actions
under Article 15 of the UCMJ.
The punishments imposed reflect
the commander’s determination of
an appropriate punishment after
considering the circumstances of the
offense and the offender’s record.
Officers may not be reduced in rank
as a punishment. A suspended punishment does not take effect unless
the offender engages in additional
misconduct or fails to satisfy the
conditions of the suspension. The
suspension period usually lasts for
six months unless a lesser amount is
specified.
JBSA-Lackland (12):
The Article 15 actions from JBSALackland include, but are not limited
to:
Dereliction of Duty, Willful: A first
lieutenant misused her government
travel card and lied to leadership
when questioned. The member received forfeitures of $2,292 pay per
month for one month and a reprimand.
Absent Without Leave: A senior
airmen without authority failed to
remain in the local area as defined
in a memorandum for all 543rd Support Squadron personnel. The member received a suspended reduction
to airman first class, forfeitures of
$1,027 pay per month for one month,
30 days extra duty and a reprimand.
Absent Without Leave: A senior
airmen without authority failed to
remain in a designated duty location
and failed to report to duty at designated time. The member received a
suspended reduction to airman first
class, suspended forfeitures of $511
pay per month for two months, 15
days extra duty and a reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty, Willful: A senior airman misused her government
travel card by making unauthorized
purchases. The member received a
reduction to airman first class and a
reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty x 2, Willful: Two
airmen first class in technical training
failed to remain inside the dormitory
between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4
a.m. and fled from an NCO when seen
attempting to leave. They received a
suspended reduction to the grade of
airman, 14 days restriction, 14 days
extra duty and a reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty, Willful: An airman in technical training failed to remain inside the dormitory between
the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. The
member received suspended forfeitures of $404 pay per month for one
month, 14 days restriction, 14 days
extra duty and a reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty, Willful: An airman basic in technical training failed
to remain inside the dormitory between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
The member received a reduction to
the grade of airman basic, forfeitures of $733 pay per month for two
months, one month of 773.00 pay per
month suspended, 60 days restriction
and a reprimand.
JBSA-Fort Sam Houston (3):
The Article 15 actions from JBSAFort Sam Houston consist of:
Failure to Go x 2 & Dereliction
of Duty, Failing to have a 29B: An
airman first class failed to report to
the physical training pad where the
squadron performed PT. He also went
outside the allowed radius without an
Air Force Form 29b, which resulted
in the member missing accountability. The member received 14 days of
restriction to JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, forfeiture of $911 for two months
with one month suspended and a reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty, Willful x 2:
During a health and welfare inspec-
tion, an airman first class was found
in possession of alcohol. The member
was also under the legal age of 21.
The member received a reduction to
the rank of airman and a reprimand.
Dereliction of Duty, Willful: An airman first class was found out of her
dormitory after accountability was
performed. The member received 14
days of restriction to JBSA-Fort Sam
Houston and a reprimand.
JBSA – Randolph (1):
The Article 15 action from JBSARandolph consists of:
Failure to Go: An airman basic
failed to go to his appointed place of
duty. When contacted by his unit to
determine his location, he lied about
his whereabouts. The member received forfeitures of $773 per month
for one month and a reprimand.

Staff, patients celebrate grand opening of Westover Medical Home

Brooke Army Medical Center celebrated the
grand opening of its newest and largest communitybased medical home with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
Sept. 18.
Westover Medical Home is a 14,000-square-foot
military primary care clinic equipped with a laboratory and full service pharmacy with a drive through
window option. Located on the Northwest side of
San Antonio at 10010 Rogers Crossing, the clinic
officially opened to military beneficiaries in the surrounding area last month.
“We are proud to bring military medicine right
into the neighborhood where our patients live,”
Army Col. Kevin Moore, Department of Family and
Community Medicine chief, said at the ceremony.
“Westover will expand the reach of military
medicine in San Antonio, allowing us to care for
more than 14,400 patients when fully staffed and
operational.”
In its “end state,” the clinic will house 13 primary
care providers, a behavioral health specialist, clinical
pharmacologist, and more than 50 nurses, pharmacists, technicians and medical support staff. “We
have handpicked a dedicated and talented staff to
care for our patients,” Moore said.
In his remarks, Col. Evan Renz, BAMC commander
thanked everyone who contributed to the new clinic.
“This is a beautiful facility and a staff with exceptional qualifications,” he said. “With the location,
access, services and convenience for our patients,
I think we’re on track for success.”
During the ceremony, several patients looked on
from the newly completed waiting areas. Army retiree Rick Lugo said he and his wife were thrilled
when they heard about the new clinic, conveniently
located five miles from their home. When attending
other military clinics, “we would leave the house at
8 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. appointment,” he said. “Now,
we leave our house 10 minutes prior and still make
it on time.”
When Nick and Clarita Alhambra heard about
Westover, they immediately called to enroll. The day
of the ceremony marked their second visit to the
facility. “It’s a very nice clinic and the parking is
great,” Clarita said.
Staff and patients applauded as Brig. Gen. Barbara
R. Holcomb, commanding general of Southern
Regional Medical Command; Renz, and Dr. Darii
Ann Lane, clinic officer in charge, cut the ribbon.
The ceremony marks the beginning of a “great
new venture,” Holcomb said.
Westover is one of nearly a dozen military medical clinics across San Antonio, and one of several
community-based medical homes designed to offer
convenient, high quality care to military families
throughout the San Antonio Military Health System.

Special Operations Airmen march to honor fallen comrades
The fourth Special Tactics Memorial
March started Oct. 4 in remembrance
of the two Special Tactics Airmen who
were killed Aug. 26 in an apparent
insider attack in Helmand Province,
Afghanistan and continues until Oct. 13.
The march began in 2009 in memory
of Staff Sgt. Tim Davis, a combat controller killed by an Improvised Explosive
Device, Feb. 20, 2009, during Operation
Enduring Freedom.
The march is held only when a Special
Tactics operator is killed in action that
year. In addition, the memorial march
honors all 19 Special Tactics pararescuemen and combat controllers who have
been killed in action since 2001.
Twenty Special Tactics Airmen started at 2 a.m. at Joint Base San AntonioLackland Medina Annex. They will trek
812 miles and relay through five states,
averaging 12.5 miles per leg. Each
two-man team walked approximately
90 miles during the 10-day trek while
carrying a 50-pound ruck sack and a

The team made their way through
downtown San Antonio at approximately 6 a.m. before heading east across
Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama
and Florida.
The 20 team members will reunit
in Wynnhaven Beach, Fla., Oct. 13 to
march the final 4.6 miles together and
walk the final mile from the front gate
at Hurlburt Field, Fla., with surviving
family members of the 19 fallen Special
Tactics Airmen and members of the
community. The march will end 6 p.m.
at the Special Tactics Training Squadron
at Hurlburt Field with a small ceremony.
Event organizer, retired Chief Master
Sgt. Steven Haggett, said before the event
that the team hopes to rally supporters
throughout the trek who want to march
beside them for this worthy cause.
“We do this arduous march to commemorate and honor fallen members
of Air Force Special Tactics and their
families. These warriors gave their lives
in defense of freedom and our nation’s
security, and so every step of every mile
is in memory of that sacrifice,” Haggett
said. “We want to educate our fellow
Americans about these Special Tactics
Airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice and pay tribute in a public way to
the families and communities who support these special operators. We hope
to show all Americans that while these
heroes may be gone, they will never be
forgotten.”

Save a life through early detection of breast cancer

In recent years, medical advances
in both early detection and treatment
have helped millions of women survive
breast cancer.
This year, 230,000 women will be
diagnosed with breast cancer and
currently more than 2.8 million breast
cancer survivors are living in the United States.
However, breast cancer continues
to be the most commonly diagnosed
cancer among women worldwide and
the second leading cause of death
among women in the United States.
What is breast cancer
Breast cancer is a disease that causes
normal cells in the breast to change
and grow out of control. Abnormal
cells group together, also known as
malignant tumors, destroy body tissue
that may spread throughout the body.
According to the American Cancer
Society, about 1 in 8 women in the
United States will develop invasive
breast cancer during their lifetime. A
woman’s risk increases with age; thus
it is important to detect breast cancer
early through screening.
Why is early detection important?
The chances of survival are much
higher if the cancer is detected in the
early stages. According to the National
Breast Cancer Foundation, when breast
cancer is found early before spreading
through the body, the five-year survival
rate is 98 percent.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention recommends breast
cancer screening tests for early detection. This means checking a woman’s
breasts for cancer before there are
signs or symptoms of the disease. Talk
with your doctor about which tests are
right for you, and when you should
have them.
Mammograms
To increase the chances of early
detection, the CDC recommends that
women 50-74 years of age get a
screening mammogram every 2 years.
Women 40-49 years should discuss
with their medical providers as to
when they should start getting mammograms.
A mammogram is an X-ray of the
breast. Mammograms are the best
way to find breast cancer early, when
it is easier to treat and before it is big
enough to feel or cause symptoms.
Clinical breast exam
All women should receive a clinical breast exam during their annual
physical. A clinical breast exam is an
examination by a doctor or nurse, who
uses his or her hands to feel for lumps
or other changes.
Breast self-exams
Women can also aid in early detection by examining their own breasts.
Breast self-exams involve looking at
and feeling both breasts with your
fingers to check for lumps. Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform a breast self-exam at least once
a month. It is important that women
know what is normal for the shape,
look, and feel of their breasts, so that
they are able to recognize any changes in the appearance of the nipple or
breast that are different from normal.
If there are any signs or symptoms,
a health care provider should check
them out immediately.
Symptoms to look for include
• Lumps in the breast
• Thickening of the breast skin
• Rash or redness of the breast
• Breast swelling
• New onset of breast pain
• Dimpling around the nipple or on
the breast skin
• Nipple pain or the nipple turning
inward
• Nipple discharge
• Lumps in the underarm area
Changes in breast do not always
mean that breast cancer is present. In
fact, 80 percent of breast lumps are
found to be non-cancerous. Only an
experienced health care provider can
tell women what other tests should
be performed to determine if there is
breast cancer.
Everyone needs to be proactive
about their health. Having healthy
behaviors coupled with appropriate
medical screening is a primary method
of preventing breast cancer. To reduce
risk, keep a healthy weight, exercise
regularly, get enough sleep and don’t
drink alcohol or limit alcoholic drinks
to one a day.

U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command
warns of Internet romance scams
“He loves me, he loves me not.” The phrase has
been repeated by many looking for love.
In today’s world of online dating and social media
sites, however, the phrase may have changed from
the plucking of petals to a stroke of the keys with,
“he is real, he is not.”
With millions of Americans turning to the
internet for love and companionship, the U.S. Army
Criminal Investigation Command warns of romance
scams and impersonation fraud that drains one both
emotionally and financially.
In the last six months of 2014, online romance
scams cost their victims more than $82 million,
according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint
Center. The average financial loss from these
romance schemes is between $15,000 and $20,000.
The Criminal Investigation Command, commonly
known as CID, reports many of these cyber criminals pose as U.S. Soldiers or senior Army officers and
non-commissioned officers. The criminals often post
official Army photographs and biographies in an attempt to build trust with their victims and lure them
out of personal and financial information.
Officials warn that the perpetrators use both social
media and online dating sites, promising love and
romance to unsuspecting victims. After the initial
introduction, often through very personal, intimate
conversations via instant messaging or email, the
scammers attempt to manipulate and exploit their
victims. Tactics used by cyber criminals include preying on their victim’s emotions and appealing to their
sense of empathy and patriotism.
Before long, the cybercriminal makes a request for
money. Complying with these requests often places
the victim at risk financially and opens them up to
the possibility of becoming a victim of identity theft.
“We cannot stress enough that people need to stop
sending money to persons they meet on the Internet
and claim to be in the U.S. military,” said Chris Grey,
Army CID spokesman. “It is heartbreaking to hear
these stories over and over again of people who have
sent thousands of dollars to someone they have never
met and sometimes have never even spoken to on
the phone.”
Grey explained that the victims are most often unsuspecting women, 30 to 55 years old, who
think they are romantically involved with American
Soldiers on the Internet, when in fact they are being cyber-robbed by perpetrators thousands of miles
away.
The perpetrators often take the true rank and
name of a U.S. Soldier who is honorably serving somewhere in the world, or has even left the
service, and post that information with photographs
of a Soldier downloaded from the Internet.
Many of them state they are serving in a combat
zone or foreign country, most often West African
countries. The perpetrators give excuses for needing money, to include medical care, to return to the
states, to sell their car, and to help their children.

“These thieves are very good at what they do. They
manipulate the emotions of their victims and will
make claims about Army regulations that the public
does not know are incorrect,” Grey said. “The majority of the time, the service member is not even aware
their name and photo is being used in this way.”
Investigators urge the public to consider the
following:
Be extremely suspicious if you are asked for money
for transportation costs, communication fees or marriage processing and medical fees. Don’t ever send
money.
If you do start an internet-based relationship with
someone, research what they are telling you with
someone who would know, such as a current or former service member.
Be very suspicious if you never actually speak with
the person on the phone or are told you cannot write
or receive letters in the mail. Servicemen and women
serving overseas will often have an APO or FPO mailing address.
Many of the negative claims made about the military
and the supposed lack of support and services
provided to troops overseas are inaccurate – check
the facts.
Be very suspicious if you are asked to send money
or ship property to a third party or company. Often
times the company exists, but has no idea or is not
a part of the scam.
Be aware of common spelling, grammatical or language errors in the emails.

The Defense Health Agency celebrated its achievement of full operational capability Oct. 1, two years
after the agency was first established.
It’s been an exciting and rewarding time. We have
grown as an organization – certainly in size, but also
in maturity and the sophistication of our analytic
and management functions.
We have worked together to support the Services
and our combatant commanders in their missions.
We have delivered on our commitment to provide
the best health care possible to our 9.5 million service members, retirees and their families. We have
made the entire Military Health System enterprise
better. While the agency is just two years old, its genesis
goes back further.
In 2011, the deputy secretary of defense convened
a task force to look at options for the long-term
governance of the MHS. The lessons of 10 years of
war combined with the fiscal realities of the present
established the value of a more integrated approach
in support of operational forces. From that task force was born the idea of the
DHA, an organization built for the services by the
services – under the auspices of the Army, Navy
and Air Force medical departments. Our overriding mission is to have a medically ready force and
ready medical force at all times, fully supporting a
better, stronger, more relevant – and beyond that,
more viable – MHS. As the DHA stood up – a process I’ll make the
point of saying took great vision and tenacity – we
worked to identify the core functions, find where
the opportunities for greater integration exist, and
institute repeatable processes across the enterprise.
We’ve streamlined our processes in both our
clinical and business operations and are working
as one team across the entire MHS community –
the Services, Joint Staff and outside experts who’ve
established enterprise-wide shared services in other
industries.
For example, working as one team, DHA’s
Healthcare Operations led the MHS response to
the Ebola crisis in West Africa. What was learned
in the response will help the region, as well as
our own efforts, to be better prepared against
infectious diseases.
More recently, using more than 800 experts from
across the MHS, we put together a request for proposal for a new electronic health record. Industry
responded, and we are acquiring more than just a
health record. We’ll have a better system of tracking the care of our beneficiaries and securely sharing electronic health information across systems of
care.
Our beneficiaries will have increased abilities to
monitor their health care and communicate with
their health care providers. What’s the result of our work so far? Improved
delivery of services with substantial savings to the
Defense Department and the taxpayer.
We’re saving valuable resources, $350 million in
fiscal year 2014 alone, and projecting nearly $3.5
billion in savings over the next four years.
We’ve become a platform for innovation across
the Services. We’re encouraging military medical research and development, both within the MHS and
with external partners in academia and the private
sector, in an effort to not only ensure our forces are
in a constant state of military readiness, but to also
ensure we have the most advanced medical means
and knowledge to restore and return them to duty
when ill or injured. There’s much to be proud of from the past two
years, but we still have much work to do.
As a combat support agency, we want to become
to medicine what the Defense Logistics Agency is
to logistics. We are building a health system that
celebrates and protects the special expertise that
is required for Army, Navy and Air Force medicine, while recognizing there is a great deal of our
work that requires common approaches to medical
care, and common approaches to how we conduct
business.
When we make processes more efficient, we also
need to enhance readiness, safety and quality. The
DHA works with the services to make that happen.
Our agency was built by, and is staffed by, dedicated
professionals from the services and from our career
civilian staff who are determined to see this succeed. While we celebrate the major milestone of full
operational capability, I want to emphasize this is
just a mile marker, not the finish line. No one takes
success as a given.
To my DHA colleagues, I encourage you to stay
the course, continue to mature the organization and
always seek out new opportunities for improvement
and advancement. We’ll continue to strive for excellence, collaborating with the services, military medical leaders, clinicians and beneficiaries to ensure
our nation has a medically ready force … and a
ready medical force now and in the future.

DFAS serves 21st century Airmen

Maj. Gen. Mark Brown visited the Defense Finance
and Accounting Service Headquarters in Indianapolis
Sept. 16 to speak about 21st century Airmen and
how DFAS could help service today’s generation
during the agency’s annual business meeting.
Teresa McKay, DFAS director, invited the general
to an assembled group of DFAS leaders about the
agency’s relationship with one of its’ primary military customers – the Air Force and its Airmen.
Currently serving as the 2nd Air Force commander, Brown is responsible for all operational aspects of
basic military training, initial skills training and advanced technical training for the Air Force’s enlisted
force and support officers. The 2nd Air Force graduates more than 150,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors,
Marines and international students annually.
“Those are DFAS’ customers; those are the folks
that you service so well and that I am so honored to lead,” Brown said. “One hundred and fifty
thousand new Airman every year graduate from
basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland … to take our U.S. Air Force faster,
farther and higher than it’s ever been in our
nation’s history.”
Brown’s background is primarily in the finance
field; having previously served as the Air Mobility
Command comptroller and financial management
director. Prior to his current assignment, he was
the Air Force Materiel Command comptroller with
responsibility for 38 percent of the Air Force budget,
totaling approximately $60 billion.
He spoke about transitioning from that job into his
current command and the initial remarks about the
“me generation” he would be dealing with.

bit about the 21st century Airman and not all of it
was positive,” he said. “They’re born of a digital
age and you’ve got to get ready to lead them. The
21st century Airman wants the world at his or her
fingertips and, frankly, for the social aspects of their
life, that’s where it already is.
“Their expectation is that their business is con-

ducted with the same tools that they use to socialize.
Today’s Airmen gain insight through headlines and
instant messaging; they don’t watch the 6 o’clock
news, they have the news all day long, whenever
they want it,” he continued. “To them the value of
time is immeasurable in a society where any piece of
information you want can be found within seconds.
If you want to service them, you have to reach them
on their turf. Their turf exists in cyberspace. While
abstract to us, it’s a daily reaction, a daily reality
to our Airmen.”
Brown said in today’s Air Force training schools,
instead of binders, crew chiefs’ technical orders are
now available on iPads; career development courses
can be downloaded to iPhones; and leave and earning statements that used to be issued on deployment
lines are more readily available online.
The general said that technology is not the only
thing setting the 21st century Airman apart from
earlier generations. “As society at large becomes
more diverse,” he said “so have we.”
That diversity is present in DFAS’ employees and
customers every day. With about 12,000 Department
of Defense civilian and military personnel at work
at 10 DFAS locations throughout the U.S., Europe
and the Pacific, they are responsible for 1,232
active DOD appropriations. DFAS is the trust fund
manager for $403 billion in foreign military sales
and $700 billion in military retirement and health
benefit funds.
The agency leads the DOD’s day-to-day accounting and finance activities, disbursing more than
$579 billion annually by processing 161.8 million
pay transactions for 6.6 million military personnel,
federal civilian employees, military retirees and
annuitants; 10.3 million commercial invoices; and
6 million travel vouchers and settlements.
Brown said this is why it was so important to
him to make the trip to speak to DFAS leadership,
because DFAS is such an important organization.
If there’s any organization that can transform itself to lead and service our 21st century Airmen
into the future, it’s DFAS, Brown said.

prevented five active duty personnel from driving while intoxicated. She
was also a games and activity committee lead during a 37th Training
Support Squadron morale barbecue and going away. Schmidt’s dedication to being a wingman and Air Force Ambassador is showcased
in her combined 67.45 hours of selfless off-duty commitments to San
Antonio food banks, heritage ceremonies and extending a helping hand
to Airmen in need.”
“Senior Airman Christopher Corley is the epitome
of a United States Air Force Airman who demonstrates the highest
caliber of military image and bearing. His hard work and dedication
ensured the largest deployment tempo in Air Education and Training
Command went unhampered by validating completion of 126 taskers
and equipping 46 members with $1.1 million worth of individual protective equipment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Corley’s
relentless effort for the unit’s continuous improvement process was in
full effect; in which he developed a new appointment tracker scheduling and tracking 800 appointments for 576 enlisted members. These
distinctive accomplishments clearly separate him from his peers and
make him especially deserving of being called ‘Diamond Sharp.’”

a backlog of pay records to be completed and reimbursements to be
made to retirees, civilians and permanent party members preventing
more than $1.5 million in debt to be incurred. His keen attention to
detail as the Joint Base San Antonio Leave Web program supervisor
ensured more than 770 military members within 103 wing and tenant
units were reconciled without any leave lost to members. He is a great
trainer, young leader, mentor and supervisor. Baldwin is the 502nd

Early in the session, instructor Krissy
Brunshidle instructs students in a gentle
tone to execute an Upward Facing Dog
pose - a plank exercise where students
tilt their head back and look upward, stick
their chests out, and draw their shoulder
blades toward one another while the top of
their feet are pressed into the mat.
They transition to downward facing dog
– where they lower their heads as arms
are stretched forward and heels are placed
firmly on the mat as they push off their
hands to extend their pelvis upward.
The students later perform warrior II –
a standing mountain pose where feet and
arms are stretched apart as they pivot
their feet and bend their knees.
The session concludes with Savasana –
or corpse pose – a traditional final pose
where individuals lie down and detach
from the present.
“Savasana is a time for rebirth where
the students can rejuvenate themselves for
the rest of the day,” Brunshidle said. “The
pose is a great reward for them to relax
and blistfully lie down for a minute or two.”
Brunshidle mentioned yoga is great for
physical and mental strength such as flexibility, core strength and reduced stress.
“Yoga is about challenging yourself
physically, emotionally and spiritually,”
she said “Your body might not move like
the other people in the class and that is
normal.”

Both said they have become stronger
and reinvigorated since joining the class.
“I have gained stamina to do exercises
for an extended period of time,” Fugett
explained. “I usually want to go home and
take a nap, but instead I have the energy
to do things, which you wouldn’t expect
after exercising for an hour.”
Added Alexieva: “I have improved on my
strength, flexibility and breathing. Yoga
helps you maintain focus and have good
body posture.
“I am tired before I come to yoga, but
I have a lot more energy after the class
to get through my day,” she continued.
“I usually want to hit the pillow after 5 p.m.
but not after yoga.”
Mary Turner, a retired master sergeant
who is currently a massage therapist, said
she has also seen enhanced flexibility and
stamina since starting the class in July.
She credits yoga for reducing stress.
Zombie 5K Run/Walk
All zombies looking to feed on some competition can participate in the Zombie 5K Fun
Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 30 starting at Stapleton Park on Security Hill. Prizes will be
awarded to the best dressed male and female zombie. The race is free and runners can

“Being a massage therapist can be
stressful at times, so I needed to take a
class that relaxes me,” Turner said. “We
don’t realize how little we breathe, so we
use our diaphragm to be able to control
our breathing when we hold our posture
during class.”
Brunshidle recommends yoga to individuals because of the relaxation and
empowerment it delivers.
She applies a quote – “every pose is a
perfect pose” – to drive home the benefits
of participation.
“There’s no judgment in yoga because

Yoga is held Mondays at 11:30 a.m. and
Wednesdays at 4:15 p.m. and is $3 per
