Bath Community Academy Weekly Newsletter – Term 2 Edition 2 This newsletter is issued weekly in order to celebrate the achievements of students and staff as well as to thank those who put so much effort into ensuring that students at Bath Community Academy continue to have opportunities to try new things and to maximise their achievements. I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter as much as I enjoy receiving and collating each item. Please do continue to inform me of any studentsʹ achievements and experiences that I am unaware of so that they can be included in future editions. CLF hosts the Prime Minister! The CLF hosted a full cabinet meeting on Monday, in a classroom at John Cabot Academy in Kingswood, including the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. Students from across the Federation, including nine Year 11 BCA students, attended a question and answer session with Mr Cameron where George Young asked an excellent question about immigration. All students listened intently and enjoyed working alongside other CLF students to craft questions for the PM. The full news stories can be seen on the CLF website (http://www.clfacademies.net/index.php/news-media/). Maths Quiz 1 – The answer was the bottle costs 50p. Congratulations to George Lynn - See Mr Huxley for your prize! Maths Quiz 2 There are 300 students in the school. There are 4 times as many boys as girls. How many boys are there? Email answers to Mr Huxley! CLF Big Charity Read Today we had 24 KS3 students raising money for charity by taking part in the CLF Big Charity Read. Hopefully, working alongside other CLF academies, we will raise lots of money for charity. THE ATC (AIR TRAINING CORPS) The Bath Community Academy ATC currently has 13 cadets. This group is part of 93 Squadron (Bath) and cadets can also optionally attend sessions on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the TA Centre on Lower Bristol Road. Powered flying is available approximately once a month and additional flying slots are sometimes also possible. The ATC uses the nearby Colerne Airfield under the control of the ‘Vickers ‘organisation and we are lucky to have such a facility nearby. The aircraft are custom-built trainers and are especially stressed to cope with aerobatics safely. The pilots are retired RAF fighter or other type of aircraft pilots with many years of experience. Cadets must be 13 years and 3 months or over to fly. The planes are dual control GROB twin-seaters and cadets can choose to do aerobatics if they wish (Mr Elliott has done a ‘ Loop the Loop ‘ and ‘ Barrel Roll ‘ and have experienced momentary ‘ zero gravity ‘ at the top of the loop and extra g-forces at the bottom). Flights normally last about 25 minutes and cadets are encouraged to take the controls. Gliding classes are also available on certain weekends at Hullavington airfield near Chippenham. For more details, see Mr Elliott. _______________________________________________________________ Principal: Adam Williams Rush Hill, Bath, BA2 2QL Tel: 01225 426268 Fax: 01225 447036 Web: www.bathcommunityacademy.org Bath Community Academy is part of the Cabot Learning Federation, a registered Charity No 1119322 registered in England and Wales (as a Company Limited by Guarantee No 6207590 Registered Office: Woodside Road, Kingswood, Bristol, BS15 8BD) SPONSORED BY ROLLS ROYCE PLC AND THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND Project Phoenix Mr Seavill and the staff at BCA continue to deliver a fantastic range of Project Phoenix activities every Friday afternoon.
