Installation of Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services and Citrix. Note that this document is considered a sample walkthrough of the installation process. It is by no means to be taken as a manual or a substitute for product documentation. Part 1: Installation of Windows 2000 Terminal Services. Confirm formatting the drive by hitting the ‘f’ key. Confirm formatting the drive using FAT32 by hitting the ENTER key. At this point the formatting of the drive will begin. The setup program will run a drive check on the partition just formatted and then begin copying the setup files to the partition. Setup will then initialize your configuration. After the initialization, setup will reboot itself. Windows will then restart. The setup program will restart itself. The GUI Based Setup wizard will then begin. Hit the Next button to continue. Setup will begin to detect your hardware devices. After detection has finished you will be presented with your Regional Settings Configuration. Choose the licensing model appropriate for you. This would typically be a per seat model. Next enter the computer name for the server as well as the administrator user account password. The computer name to use should be T1, the administrative password can be anything. This password is vitally important and cannot be lost. Setup Wizard will now present you with optional components to install. The default options can be used with the addition of Terminal Services and Terminal Services Licensing. The Date and Time settings are now presented. Please set the appropriate time zone and if necessary, the proper date and time. Choose Application server mode in the Terminal Services Setup screen. Choose Permissions compatible with Terminal Server 4.0 Users. Setup will now begin to install the optional components. Use Typical Settings at this point. Setup will finish the installation of the networking components. Setup will perform it’s final tasks and then reboot. Hit the finish button to reboot the server. The server will reboot and prompt for a login. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and login as the administrative account with the password you previously created. You will now be logged into the server and presented with a Configure Your Server screen. Choose the last option of “I will configure this server later.” Clear the checkbox in the Show this screen at startup and hit the x in the upper right-hand corner to close the screen. At this point, the base operating system is installed and ready to go. There are a few post installation tasks required to finalize the setup. The first step is to ensure that all devices are functioning normally and are installed. This can fairly easily be verified by righclicking on My Computer and choosing properties. From here choose the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button. This tab shows the hardware installed in your system. Provided there are no red X’s or Yellow exclamation marks, your system is ready to go. If there are any problems, you may need new drivers or have a hardware problem. The second is to configure the network adapters installed in the server. The instructions that follow show a simple configuration with a single network card. Right click on “My Network Places” and choose properties to see the network settings installed on the server. Depending on the number of network adapters installed, this area may show multiple icons. If multiple network cards are installed in the server (including wireless cards) configure each with on a unique network with unique addresses. Right click on the connection to configure and choose properties. Choose the “Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)” and click on Properties. Here is where you enter the IP address for the network card. Typically use 192.168.1.1 for a wired network card and 192.168.2.1 for a wireless card. At this point it becomes important to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. At the time of this writing, it is not recommended to install Service Pack 3 as there are fixes in there that can cause potential problems with Terminal Services. This item can be obtained from the Microsoft web site. After installation of the Service Pack it is important to install at LEAST the hot fix: Q287687 which can be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/critical/q287687/default.asp. The final step is to activate and install the Terminal Services Licensing. This can be done from the Administrative tools on the Start Menu. Choose to active your server after right clicking on your servername in the right pane of the Terminal Service Licensing program. This will begin the Licensing Wizard. Choose your connection Method. Most users will activate their license by telephone. Choose your Country/Region. Call the Microsoft License Center using the number provided to obtain the server ID and type it in the boxes provided. ############### Do other stuff I don’t know… ############### After you have installed your licenses, you need to create the userids for the terminals that will access the system. This is done by rightclicking on “My Computer” and choosing Manage. Expand the System Tools tree, then the Local Users and Groups and choose the Users folder. Righclick in the right pane and choose New User… The usernames need to be unique and follow the scheme S# where # is a number starting from 1 to the number of terminals at the site. Repeat these steps for each user to create. Once all your users are created, choose the Groups folder and create a System3 group by righclicking in the pane and choosing New Group. Name the group as show and hit the add button to add your users to the group. Also add the administrator account. Windows 2000 Server setup is now complete and Citrix Installation can begin. Enter an appropriate farm name. In a multifarm environment, these need to be unique. Confirm your farm name as it cannot be changed. Choose the default (Operate independently in native IMA-only mode) Use the local administrative account on the machine and enter the machine name in the domain section. Validate the user name selection. Only TCP/IP should be available for network ICA Connection. There is no need to setup a modem. Just hit the next button. Hit the next button to configure the shadowing options. Leave the default options to allow shadowing of ICA sessions. Hit the next button to get to the next area of the Drive Mapping section. DO NOT Remap the drives. Leave them as they are. Leave the default option to share the default TCP/IP port with Internet Information Server for the Citrix XML Service. Allow Citrix to install Nfuse. After the system reboots, log in as administrator and you will be warned to activate your licenses. Also notice the new MetaFrame XP toolbar down the right hand side. Click the OK button. Click the bottom icon on the toolbar to enter the Citrix Management console. It requires 800x600 resolution so it is recommended to change to this before starting. Log in using the administrative account. The management console will then be displayed. The first action will be to activate the licenses added. Click the licenses part of the tree in the left pane, then click on the License Numbers tab. Next right click on your first license number and choose Activate from the menu. Otherwise, install the latest service pack for Citrix to keep up to date. The next item is to test your installation. We will do this by publishing a simple application (notepad) and connecting to it from the server. If you exiting the management console, start it up again and go to the applications part of the tree in the left pane. Right click on the word application and click Publish Application. Enter a Display Name and Application Description of Notepad. Enter the commandline and working directory as shown. Leave the default options and hit the next button. Once again, leave the default options and choose next to continue. Set the Audio to Audio off and leave the Encryption type as basic. Add your server as a configured server by clicking on it and hitting the add button. Change the Domain to your servername and add the Administrators and System3 groups. Click the finish button. Your application is now configured. Now to test it by first closing the management console and then doubleclicking on the Citrix Program Neighborhood icon on the desktop. Log in using one of the user accounts created during the Windows 2000 Server setup. You should notice your notepad icon. Double click on it to launch the application. Notepad will now launch through the local citrix client. Your server is now ready. Your next step is to install the client to a networked PC or handheld to verify network connectivity. Follow the instructions to perform the client setup to test connections. After that has been confirmed, you are ready to install System3 and publish it as an application. When performing the installation of any program in a Terminal Services/Citrix environment, the setup program MUST be run from the add/remove programs control panel icon.
