Holocaust Research Project A. This project must be completed on a google presentation to be shared with your teacher. B. You must complete at least ONE assignment from each category. Then you are allowed to pick and choose the rest of your points from any category. C. You must complete at least 60 points from various assignments. Follow the directions explicitly! D. All assignments must be labeled clearly and put in order on your presentation. They are numbered. E. At the end of each assignment, you must do a works cited section. We must know where you did all your research and where you got your information. F. All work is due Tuesday, February 23rd. Required Background Vocabulary Use an online dictionary to define the following words: antiJewish laws SS (schutzstaffel) Kristallnacht ghetto Third Reich pogroms callup notice antiSemitism Nazi Holocaust genocide Axis powers Allies Blitzkrieg propaganda After writing the definitions of each word, write a GOOD sentence for each word that makes it absolutely clear that you understand the meaning. . 10 pts. Category 1Gathering Content 1 . Research first hand accounts of Holocaust survivors. Then write a news article from the perspective of a survivor. You are a fictional person, but you must base your account on the research you did. What did you see, hear, and feel? You must describe the devastation in the most vivid verbs/adjectives you can think of. Write all your information of the event from your research. You must have three paragraphs and have at least four to five sentences in each paragraph. You must title your article and have a “by” line, e.g. by Joanne Jones 20 pts . 2. Research an actual person who was a victim of the Holocaust. You must select someone who has been written about extensively, other than Anne Frank. Tell us about their life, who they were, family, circumstances of their lives. Did they die or survive? If there is a picture of this person, please include it on your page. This must be three paragraphs with at least four to five sentences in each paragraph. 20 pts. 3. Look for examples on the internet of both fiction and nonfiction regarding the Holocaust. You must have three examples of fictional works related to the Holocaust and a description of each. Then you must have three examples of nonfiction related to the Holocaust and a description of each. Under each example, you must explain why it is fiction or nonfiction. You can include advertisements, pictures, movies, books, news articles, documentaries, posters etc. 10pts. 4. Search the Holocaust museum’s website to find a timeline of events, http://www.ushmm.org/ After browsing the various events on the timeline (scroll down for extra pictures and explanations), list 25 new pieces of information you learned about the Holocaust. This must be new information for you. 10 pts . 5. Research people who helped those who were targeted during the Holocaust. Select one person and describe what they did to assist these people. Why did they help? What was the result of their efforts? Include a photo, if one is available. This must be at least two paragraphs, at least four to five sentences for each paragraph. 15 pts. Category 2 Applying content 6. Research propaganda artwork that was used during WWII. Copy and paste 2 images into your document. Then explain in four to five sentences each what you think each example’s purpose was during WWII. 10 pts . 7. Draw a large Venn diagram. Choose two newspapers that were reporting about Kristallnacht OR the Warsaw ghetto uprising and compare and contrast their coverage. Try to find newspapers from different countries, if possible. Think hard and find even those less obvious similarities and differences. You must have at least three or more comments in each section of the diagram. You must include a link to each of the articles you used, as well as the name of the newspapers. 15 pts 8. Research and report WWII statistics. You must use at least three different sources. You must have at least 20 significant statistics. Make sure you cite your sources in this section. You are not limited to only reporting casualties of the war. You could also focus on Japanese internment, wartime production, etc. It can be any WWII stats, not just in Europe. 10 pts 9. Create a collage of pictures of WWII or the Holocaust. You must have at least 15 or more pictures. These can be pictures of significant people, important places or events. The colage may be digital or on paper (if you do it on paper you need to take a picture of it and upload it to your google doc.) You will need to identify each of the images you include. 10 pts. 10. Research the artwork that was stolen or hidden during WWII. Find out why the Nazis wanted this artwork or where it was hidden. Report on how many pieces of art were taken and how many have since been recovered. Choose ONE piece of artwork and try to copy it. This choice is for the serious artist and should represent your very best work. Include the title of the painting and the artist with your work. You must include a picture of the original piece and then a picture of your work. It can be a sidebyside comparison. 20 pts . 11. Complete a timeline of the events of the Holocaust using bullet points for each of the events and pictures. Under each bullet point write an explanation of the event and above each bullet point paste a picture that represents the event. Include the start of the Holocaust and major events during this period of time. You must have 15 events MINIMUM. 15 pts. C. Category 3Evaluating/Analyzing Content 12. What was the purpose of Hitler Youth? What did they learn at meetings? Describe how Karl’s opinion of Hitler Youth changed over time. b. Why was controlling the information people received important to the Nazis? c. Find details in the article that show how and why Helmuth, Rudi and Karl tried to resist the Nazis. Choose four to include in your answer. d. How did growing up in Nazi Germany affect Helmuth, Karl and Rudi? Use text evidence to support your answer. 15 pts. 13. Read the following article on Jewish ghettos. Define ghetto. Why were ghettos established? What was the “final solution”? What were three types of ghettos and what were the most famous ghettos?
