Futures Academy – English
Year 9
Delivery mode
Online course. Internet access essential.
Online lessons are delivered through the EQ web
conference. The English course addresses the
ACARA content descriptors and achievement
standards for year 9 English. Aspects of the course
are available in an electronic format through
Blackboard. A Work Rate Calendar for each term is
available and must be downloaded from the BSDE
website.
The Academy English course is delivered using a
range of approaches including Real World Learning
Units (projects), blended learning, flipped classroom
and explicit teaching. At various times through the
course students will be engaged in collaborative
learning tasks and course content may be integrated
with other Learning Areas (subjects).
Time commitment
Students are required to attend all scheduled lessons
and complete all tasks as directed by the teacher.
The number of lessons and format of the course will
vary throughout the course and is dependent on the
focus of the Real World Learning Units being studied
by the students at the time. The time commitments
required of Academy students is similar to that of
students in the mainstream.
Prerequisites
Students should have successfully completed Year
8 English.
Course outline
Due to the trial nature of the Year 9 Academy course,
the outline below is in draft form, and is subject to
modification throughout the year.
Semester 1
Unit 1: Exploring different perspectives
Unit 2: Creating speculative fiction from
information texts
Unit 3: Real World Learning Unit – The Industrious
Industrial Revolution (integrated with
History)
Entry by expression of interest only
NOTE: Course may be modified throughout the year
Semester 2
Unit 4: Ethical issues in a drama text
Unit 5: Interpreting Texts
Unit 6: Evaluating characters in a novel
Assessment
Students will be required to complete a range of
assessment
items
incorporating
various
technologies and modes including, but not limited to:
Team tasks, team presentations, video
presentations, audio recordings and written
assignments.
Requirements
Access to a computer and the internet is essential as
the course is in electronic format and web based.
Students are required to have a microphone and a
pen stylus to use during lessons. A willingness to use
and learn new technologies is fundamental to the
philosophy of the Academy. Full requirements for

Students will also need to have suitable sound
recording software on their computer to record
spoken tasks. Instructions for downloading Audacity
are available on the school’s website.
Students should have access to the following:

 thesaurus (e.g. The Pocket Macquarie
Thesaurus)
