Bunsen Burners

Bunsen Burners
To start, attach the hose to the gas (not the air) spigot.
Do not turn the gas on yet. Open the burner's air vent fully
(see drawing, middle right). Make sure you can get a spark on the
flame striker. Try using the striker on the burner as shown at the
bottom right. Turn the gas regulator on the burner to completely
close the gas valve (see below), then open it one-half turn. Now
turn the gas spigot on (see below, left). Use one hand to hold
the burner so your fingers are blocking the air vents. Use the
flame striker as shown to ignite the gas. Remove your fingers
from the air vent. Adjust the gas regulator on the burner to
get a flame with the characteristics as shown at right. (Always
adjust the gas flow with the gas regulator. The gas spigot on
the desk is either full on or full off. It is not used to adjust gas
flow.) Try various combinations of gas and air to get gentle,
medium and hot flames. Flames should always be in the 2 to
5 cm range in height.
For hottest flame:
air full open (no threads
showing) and inner
cone 2 to 3 cm high
2 to 3 cm
Bottom of object
to be heated should
be just above tip of
cone. If using a support,
bottom of wire gauze should
be just above tip of cone.
