SARG Monsoon Invitational / July 9 - 10, 2011 / Huntingburg, IN
We enjoyed a very successful three successive weekends filled with swim meets starting with this meet in
Huntingburg, IN which was new territory for our team. We took advantage of this opportunity by winning the meet
as a team and we had multiple individual high point winners with Jack Caldwell winning high point for 8 & under
boys; Macie White won high point for 9-10 girls with Catherine Cadwallader taking runner up honors in this agegroup; Katherine Caldwell won high point for 13-14 females; and Charlie Starzman won high point for 13-14 males.
Charlie broke team records for 13-14 males in the 200 meter backstroke and 200 meter individual medley
and Kirsten Nitz broke team records for 17-18 females in the 50 meter free, 200 meter free, 100 meter backstroke,
and 100 meter breaststroke.
Congratulations to our 15 swimmers for their very successful weekend!
2011 Long Course Senior Sectionals / July 14 – 17, 2011 / Athens, GA
Kirsten had a great meet at Senior Sectionals! On Thursday, she swam the 200 meter individual medley
improving her time to 2:27.27 and then swam :27.06 in the 50 meter free where she made it back in the D final
where she broke the 27 second barrier with a :26.94 second performance landing her in 21st position at finals.
On Friday, she swam the 200 meter free in 2:12.70 improving her team record for 17-18 females and then
swam the 100 meter backstroke in a lifetime best of 1:06.48 making it again to the D final where she placed 32nd
with a 1:06.52 that evening.
On Saturday, she swam the 400 meter free setting the team record for 17-18 females with a 4:43.35
performance and then improve her lifetime best in the 100 meter butterfly by .5 seconds to 1:05.35 .
On Sunday, she finished very strong with a team record swim in 100 meter free at :59.46 allowing her to
return to the D final where she placed 32nd with a :59.52 performance. Then, she improved her lifetime best in the
200 meter backstroke in prelims by over 2 seconds going 2:22.43 and allowing her to return to finals in the C final
where she improved another 1.8 seconds to go 2:20.63 and placed 19th. The 2:20.63 is 0.36 seconds under the Long
Course Junior National standard.
All eight events that Kirsten swam became team records for 17-18 females. Congratulations to Kirsten on
her outstanding Sectional meet!
KY Swimming 2011 Long Course State A Championship / July 15 - 17, 2011 in Louisville, KY for 9-12 yearolds andJuly 21 - 24, 2011 in Elizabethtown, KY for 13 & overs
Our 12 swimmers swimming at Long Course State A Championships successfully returned our team to
tenth place in the final team standings over the past two weekends.
First up were the 9-12 swimmers with Mark Bryan, John Caldwell, Nicholas Crowe, and Genna Ringler
representing our team at the championship meet in Louisville. Each swimmer performed some good swims with
Genna Ringler getting us started with a great swim in the 9-10 females 200 meter free where she improved her time
by 2.4 seconds; Genna also had a best time in the 50 meter free and achieve the National A time standard in the
100 meter backstroke.
Mark Bryan swam the 11-12 males 400 meter free on Friday performing a 5:48.73 which was his best time
by 4.25 seconds. On Saturday, Mark improved his 50 meter backstoke by 0.5 seconds and on Sunday, Mark
achieved a fourteenth place finish in the 100 meter backstroke allowing him to swim at finals where he took 12th
place with a 1:21.67 time which was his best by 2.6 seconds. Mark scored five points with that effort placing our
team in fifteenth place in team standins.
John Caldwell improved his 50 meter backstroke time by 1.4 seconds and Nicholas Crowe improved his
50 meter backstroke time by 0.5 seconds at this half of the Long Course State A Championship meet.
The meet continued for the 13 & over under extremely hot conditions in E-town. Both the pool water and
the outdoor weather were heat advisory temperatures.
However, overall, we performed very well as long as the event wasn’t over 400 meters long. Achieving
State Championship qualifying times to represent us at the 13 & over portion of Long Course State A’s were: Ben
Bryan, Emma Bryan, Katherine Caldwell, Beth Gillig, Susan Hall, Kirsten Nitz, Rachel Pierce, and Charlie
Starzman.
Charlie got us started with a very convincing victory in the 13-14 males 100 meter breaststroke where he
improved his own team record in this event by 5.3 seconds. His prelim time in the 100 breast had represented his
best by 1.6 seconds placing him as the top seed going into finals where he improved another 3.7 seconds to claim
the state championship with a 1:12.61 time. On Saturday, Charlie added the 200 meter breaststroke to his list of
state championships with a very exciting come from behind victory where he improved his best time by 10.65
seconds. Additionally, Charlie scored fifth place finishes 1500 meter free, 100 meter back, and 200 meter individual
medley along with a seventh place in the 400 meter individual medley and a 11th place in the 200 meter free and a
13th place in the 100 meter free.
Kirsten Nitz won her own state championship with a very impressive victory in the open females’ 200
meter backstroke. She collected five second place finishes over the weekend where she got second place in the 50
meter free, 100 meter free, 200 meter free, 100 meter backstroke where she improved her lifetime best by 0.7
seconds to 1:05.78, and in the 200 meter individual medley where she improve her lifetime best 0.75 seconds from
the sectional meet to go 2:26.52 at finals on Sunday. Kirsten also achieved fifth place finishes in the 100 meter free
and the 100 meter butterfly that was her best time by 1.16 seconds improving her team record to 1:04.19. Kirsten
was awarded high point for open females for her efforts at this meet where she scored 133 total points for our team.
Emma Bryan had our other finals swim where she placed 18th in the open females’ 200 meter backstroke at
Sunday finals. Emma also performed a very good 400 meter individual medley swim on Friday where she finished
as an alternate to the finalists in this event and a strong 100 meter backstroke swim on Saturday.
Ben Bryan was Mr. Alternate at this meet finishing as the first or second alternate in four of his swims
which were the 400 meter individual medley, 200 meter breaststroke, 400 meter free, and 200 meter backstroke.
Four of his six swims were lifetime best topped by a 5.7 second improvement in his 200 meter breaststroke and a
5.34 second improvement in his 400 meter freestyle.
Beth Gillig turned in lifetime bests in the open females’ 100 meter breaststroke and in the 100 meter free
leading off our open females free relay and Katherine Caldwell improved her 100 meter backstroke time by 0.9
seconds in the 13-14 females to round out our lifetime best efforts.
Team records were achieved by Emma Bryan in the 15-16 females 400 meter individual medley event;
Beth Gillig in the 17-18 females 200 meter breaststroke; Kirsten Nitz in the 17-18 females 200 meter free, 400 meter
free, 100 meter back, 100 meter butterfly, and 200 meter individual medley; and Charlie Starzman in the 13-14
males 100 meter back, 200 meter back, 100 meter breaststroke, 200 meter breaststroke, 200 meter individual
medley, and 400 meter individual medley events.
