Rabbi Mayer Perelmutter
Congregation Rodfei Zedek
5200 Hyde Park Boulevard
Chicago, Illinois 60615
U.S.A.
Dear Rabbi Perelmutter:
Your letter of February 10 arrived yesterday and I hasten to reply.
Regarding employment possibilities 1n the Reform rabbinate, the several men
who are practicing here do so with an ass1st from the bud9et of the ~orld Union.
Dick Hirsch will be here during the period of your stay, aand you will undoubtedly
talk to him. I think we should expand the number of active congregations.
As for the field of social work, there are very many openings inbthis
country, and it would be a question of finding the best one. You should speak
to the director of the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work, at the Hebrew
University, Dr. Yosef Ue1pris. Also speak to the previous director, Or. Israel
Katz, who is now doing a special job on ger1atrfcs for the Malben Joiit.
Also speak to Lester Jaffe, who is the director of Social Work for the Municipality
of Jerusalem. These three fellows will know the picture for the whole country.
Eventually the Refoin movement in Isr.ael will have many jobd to offer ,
but you are interested ;n the inmediate future.
Please call me when you arrive and we will get together irrmediately.
Sineerely,
Herbert A. Friedman

Shalom, Herb,
1 have been t9inking about your request for the names of a number of capable
Rabbis who mi t be able to serve the Reform Movement in Israel. lt occurs
to me that th person most knowledgeable and most <''Jalified for this would

Dear Herb,
I have a letter from Dave Polish \Ibo says, "Before I left Israel, Herb
Friedman asked me for the names of a limited nllllber of our colleagues who
might be able to refer people to him for fund-raising in behalf of the World
Union Centre. I indicated to him that you would be the best person to provide him with this kind of information, and I am tuming to you for it now."
In the hope that somehow I can be helpful, let me single out those whom
I think by their own personal predilections would be particularly enthusiastic.
And this is by no means an exhaustive list:
Alvan Rubin of St. Louis; Roland Gittelsobn of Boston; Maurice Davis of
White Plains; Bob Kahn of Houston; Leon Kronisb of Miami Beach; Jack Rothschild
of Atlanta; Josh Habe rman of 'Washington; Bly Pilchik of Newark; Albert Lewish
of Los Angeles; Isaiah Zeldon of Los Angeles; Joel Goor of San Diego; Levi
Olan of Dallas; Max Shapiro; Sam Karff of Chicago; David Polish of Evanston;
Harold Saperstein of Lynbrook.
I don't know what your relationship with Louis Pin cus was but I certainly
had a l ot of fondness and admiration for the man, and feel q uite a sense of
loss at his passing .
All good wishes.

Dear Herb:
Sybil and I were recently in Israel, and the
night before we left we had a long conversation with
Gene and Essie Lipman. Gene told me about your
program and indicated that he had given you my name.
Gene indicated that you had some plans in the works,
and might be interested in sharing them. If you are,
I would be delighted to see them, or better, sit
down with you next time you are in the United States.
We plan to be in Israel for the swmner ( July
thru the first part of August). Should we not have
the opportunity to meet before that time, perhaps
we will be able to arrange something this summer.
Very sincerely,
HJF/se

Dear Roland:
As you may have heard 'lzy now, I have succumbed and agreed
to take on the assignment of he1ping to bui1d tlie institutions for
the deve1opment of the Jie:forn re1igious movement here in lerae'l.
Sometimes I thi.nll: I shouJ.a have my head examined - other times
I think it w~ll be g+eat fun.
At any rate, I am in i.t and willing
to give i t a try.
It irtill require many, many miillions of dollars
and I want to raise that money irom tbe smallest number of peop1e,
comi:ng to the United States the fewest number of times, for the
shortest number of days.
'Wml.t I am loo)dllg for, the refore, is a
very selected list of proppecte among whom to work, 1n order to
ob:bain minimum eix figure contributions.
I have an itinerary al.l set for a forthcoci.I)g trip to the
States and there are about 25 people ~hom I wi11 be trying to see.
I 'WOu1d like to have an opportunity to consult with you, in order
to selec~ namea of people worth aeeing on my next trip 1:n September.
I plan to be in Boston on Friday morni.?18, June 1st, to consult with
Leonard :Be11 and George Katz about names in the general commwrl.ty.
Perhaps we could meet that same mo~ :for an hour, and go over
names in the Temp1e cotliltriity, or any other names you might suggest.
When I get to 1;ew York I will give you a ring.
I1eanwhile,
since you are widoubtedly short of reading materia1, take a 1.ook
at the two enclosed docur.iente.
They begin to indicate the shape
&nd the scope of the plans.
