Day 4
Interest strand : Plants - bushfire / wildfire
During a bush fire or wild fire, many plants are killed. However some plants need a fire to
reproduce.
From the library , internet or Encarta, find out why a fire is so important to certain trees in
the forest.
They need fire to reproduce.
Find the names of two species that require fire to reproduce.
eucalyptus
banksia
acacia
What does the fire do to assist the trees to reproduce?
It forces the seeds to open so they can germinate.
Find out how some trees survive a bushfire (wildfire).
thick bark
roots which shoot after the top is burned
What happens to small plants in a bushfire / wildfire?
They are totally destroyed in the fire.
Even though some plants need fire to reproduce, what will happen if there are too
many bushfires or wildfires over a short time?
The trees do not have enough time to produce seeds to germinate.
Bushfires / wildfires often start in remote mountains, forests or National Parks. How do
authorities know where they are and how best to control them?
They use fire towers to spot the fires. Aeroplanes check on them. Sometimes they use
satellites.
The fire "bombers" are called in to help get water to the fire. These are special planes
that drop water and fire retardant.
