Freeport Sandy victims can claim appliance rebate

Freeport Sandy victims can claim appliance rebate
by Jim Golding
Freeport residents who lost appliances
in superstorm Sandy have until June 15
to file a claim through the Energy Star
Replacement -Rebate Program. Village
trustees approved the deadline extension
at Monday's board meeting.
Responding to a question by Trustee
Jorge Martinez, Electric Department
Superintendent Anthony Fiore explained
that residents who are customers are eligible for the rebate and their appliance
must meet energy star requirements.
There is a limit of one claim per family.
Trustees also voted to advertise for
proposals for the Freeport Plaza property along Sunrise Highway between
Grove and Church streets. Resident Alan
Jay asked if the proposals call for demo-'
lition of the property. Mayor Robert
Kennedy replied that there are "several
options," but the proposal does not specify demolition.
"It's a beautiful piece of architecture,
but it has restricted progress in that
area," said Mr. Jay, who favored demolishing the building to attract new investment in developing the property.
Village Clerk Pam Boening read the
notification from the state comptroller
approving the Electric Utility's application for exclusion of indebtedness for
the fiscal year ending on February 28.
The total amount is $64,207,011.
Police kudos
Mayor Kennedy praised Freeport
Police Department Chief Miguel
Bermudez and several officers who
arrested three armed robbers earlier in
the month following a robbery on
Roosevelt Avenue near Ray Street.
Chief Bermudez said the suspects
robbed a man about 7:20 p.m. April 5,
then fled in a car but collided with
another vehicle. Two of the suspects fled
and hid nearby but were soon arrested.
Freeport detectives arrested the third
suspect three days later.
Other actions
Trustees approved the transfer of
funds between various accounts,
including a correction of $40,559 to
the 2012-13 operating budget, which
brought a complaint from resident
Frank Grossman, who charged that the
village was disguising a deficit as a
transfer. Village Comptroller Steven
Lieberman explained that the previous
budget could still be amended before
the May 1 audit. Mr. Grossman also
raised the issue during public comment.
The board awarded the annual curb
and sidewalk contract to .F. Acosta
Landscaping of Freeport for $125,120,
and approved'the contracts for liquid
caustic soda for $119,115 to H. Krevit &
Co. of New Haven, Connecticut, and the
final completion cost of $297,301 for
rehabilitation of Well No. 7.
Trustees also, approved:
• Scheduling the Nautical Festival for
Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., with
numerous street closures and parking
restrictions.
;
• The parade permit for the Memorial
Day Parade by the American Legion on
May 27.
• The hanging of banners for the 41st
annual Shark Tournament from May 15
to June 15, and for the Nautical Festival
to be held June 1.
• A filming/photography permit from
Blue Orbit Productions Inc./The X
Factor for April 24, 7-8 a.m. on
Woodcleft Avenue.
• Changes to credit card policy to
include the names of five current village
officials, including the mayor, and the
deletion of three names from the previous administration.
During public comment, a resident
of Nassau Avenue near Suffolk Street
complained about a deep rut that
remained after street work by
National Grid. Mayor Kennedy said
he had already notified the gas com- v;
pany about completing repairs to the
pavement.
Another resident complained about
the number of unlicensed taxicabs that
he has witnessed near his business.
10
Chief Bermudez said he is conducting o
OJ
an investigation into the problem.
At the close of the meeting, Mayor H
Kennedy announced a meeting with
officials of the Long Island Rail Road,
county Legislator David Denenberg
and officials of various agencies about 8improvements needed at the Freeport
LIRR station. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8,
and the public is invited.
