THE MESSAGE TRUST
BIG BUFFET
Year Ten Food Technology
students have been cooking
up a storm for an event called
Big buffet at Trafford College.
The students worked in teams
with students from other
schools to produce a buffet
for their parents. It was a great 'taster' evening for students who want a little insight into the catering industry
and who maybe considering college courses for when they
leave school.
Last half term, Performing Arts and RE joined forces to
host a full day of Performances and Hip
Hop Work shops with the 'IN YER FACE'
Theatre Company.

STATIONERY FOR SCHOOL
In order for each lesson to start promptly, and for each
student to make the progress expected of them, it is essential that each student comes fully prepared for every
subject they study. Each subject has specific requirements for the equipment a student will need, and
students will be told this information by their class
teacher during their lessons. In addition to this, all students MUST be equipped with a pencil case containing:
 Black pens
 Ruler
 Drawing pencil
 Eraser
 Highlighter
Please ensure that your child has all the equipment for
September.

'Smile Away' was also performed by the
company and highlighted the moving
Easter Story. The company brought the
story to life and made a vivid impact on
the pupils who shared in the drama.
Pupils and Staff also participated in a
dance workshop which was very technical but extremely
enjoyable - go Miss Sherlock—a very impressive effort!

It was probably one of our
most popular turn outs for
auditions which were held
back in March. The level of
talent was extremely impressive, and the panel had a hard
job deciding who should get
the lead roles. The Art department had erected a fantastic
and realistic looking set which
really captured the essence of
1950s America, complete with
juke box and authentic fifties
poster advertisements.

The Performing Arts Team
and Lostock students have
proudly presented the stage
production of 'Grease'.
It is also the 30th anniversary
since Grease was first performed here at Lostock, directed at the time by Mrs Hilton, so we thought there
would be no better way to
commemorate. Go Greased
Lightening, go!

Here we are again on the last lap of another year: they say as you get older the
time goes quicker, and it certainly does. Interestingly the Year 11s (who are a little
younger than me!) agree that the last 12 months have flown past, but that is the
view of every Year 11 from the beginning of time. If only we could ensure that they
knew that feeling at the start of the year it might be a far easier year for both
them, and for us, as we try to drain every last drop of effort and energy from them
for their exams. We believe that this year we have supported them to be more resilient and self confident and that this was demonstrated by the exemplary way the
students conducted themselves throughout the exam period which, by the time you
receive this newsletter, will be over for this year. We obviously wish our Year 11
students every success for the future and we are confident that if they have put the
effort in, their exam results will reflect their hard work (and ours).
The rest of our students have already started the courses and work for next year.
End of year exams are due to get under way soon so that we are clear on where
each and every student is currently, allowing us to be ready to hit the ground running at the start of next term and building upon the work done this year. Have a
good summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again in September
….ready to do it all again!

Message from the Chair of Governors:
Well done to everyone at Lostock College for another successful year. The Governors and staff are working closely together to ensure outstanding progress is
made by all, and that all students are provided with the care, support, guidance
and education they deserve. I pass on my thanks
to all who work so tirelessly to see this school go
from strength to strength.

FUNDRAISING FOR
FRANCIS HOUSE
My cousin Sophie was diagnosed with a terminal illness and Francis House were there
for her and the family, even after she had
passed away. When I heard that the school
wanted to raise money for a charity, I
passed on my idea which was to raise money
for Francis House. The school approved of
my idea so I arranged a variety of different
activities such as a bake sale; a colourful
wear your own clothes day, where everyone
had to choose a rainbow colour; a balloon
release and selling Francis houses merchandise to raise money. The fundraising took
place over a week and a half and we managed to raise a staggering £554.61!
I would like to thank the school for letting
me go ahead with my idea; I would also like
to thank the students and staff that helped
me with the cake sale and a MASSIVE thank
you to all the students and parents who donated money to the charity. I am sure you
will agree that this was a huge achievement
and shows just how much we at Lostock College care for others in our community.

“I am really impressed by the
PRIMARY
VISITORS
Again this year, Lostock
College hosted weekly
visits from Moss Park Primary school. The pupils, who
are all in Year 5, were here from January - April 2014.
They came to Ms Welsh’s classroom for 10 weeks on
a Monday.
The photographs show them eating some of the
healthy vegetables and
dips they made, as
part of their lunch one
week, and showing off
their bread products in
a subsequent visit.

WEAR A WIG DAY
£102.04 was raised for the wear a wig day for the charity CLIC
Sargent. It was really overwhelming to see and there was such a
positive feel around the school. The pupils in particular seemed to
really love seeing the staff in 'drag' and the pupils
themselves looked great!
The winning pupils for best contributions were:
Mustapha Leon (Year 7)
Addison Phillips (Year 7)
Coby McCabe (Year 7)
Holly Cassidy (Year 10)
They have all won a gift voucher.
Well done to everyone for their efforts!
amount and quality of work you've
done. I look forward to hearing how
it works in practice and how you
decide to evaluate it's progress.”
A parent in praise of a Reading
Initiative, March 2014
Good-bye, Class of 2014!
There was cake; there were tears. And there was a
trip down memory lane as Year 11 watched the
Leavers’ video prepared by Mr Quinn and his media
team as part of the Leavers’ assembly on Thursday
22nd May. What had happened to all those cute,
fresh-faced Year 7 students who arrived in September 2009? Well, five years later they are all taller
and most are wiser as they leave Lostock to embark
on the next stage of their education after their
GCSE examinations. Some are hoping to continue
their studies with AS-Levels or BTEC Diplomas. Others are going on to start vocational courses and a
few are hoping to enter the world of work via the
increasingly popular apprenticeship schemes.
Whatever their destination, all the staff at Lostock
College wish our 2014 Leavers every success in the
future. In particular the Year 11 team: Ms. Ferguson, Ms. Lodhi, Mr. Higginson and Mrs. Olson would
like to thank our Leavers for their hard work
throughout their final year, as well as the laughs –
who will forget Valentine’s Day? We look forward to
seeing them again at the Year 11 Prom at the end
of June and then at 10.00am on Thursday 21st August when they come in to receive their results.
(Please note that if a student wants someone else
to collect their results, that person must have written permission from the student to do so.)

ACTIVE LEARN
This year the Science department has purchased a
new motivating resource
called Active Learn. This is
an online independent
learning resource for the
classroom
and
at
home. The resource is
made up of various GCSE
based activities and exercises and an enhanced interactive version of the
associated course text
book.
All Year 10 and 11 pupils
have their own unique
username and password
for this resource and have
been using it throughout
the year alongside classwork and homework. This
has enabled pupils to ensure they are prepared and
ready for their examinations at the end of the
year. Pupils have found
this very useful and it has
enriched
independent
learning within the science
department. Next year we
will be hoping to take this
further by embedding this
resource into Year 9.
Quote from year 11 pupil:
'Active Learn has really
helped me focus my revision at home - when I do
not understand the topic I
can use the interactive
power point to recap my
learning. My teacher can
then check this and leave
a comment online to help
me’.

YEAR 8
SCIENCE
Each term Year 8 pupils have
been completing investigating projects as part of their
homework tasks. Last term
pupils had to complete a task
about the periodic table. The
task involved pupils researching the scientists involved in
producing the very first periodic table and their thoughts
on the future of the elements. Task list below:
Section 1: Research the
development of the periodic
table
Use the Internet or books to
find out about the scientists
listed above.
Describe the role each scientist played.
Draw a timeline to show the
developments that took
place.
Section 2: Why does the
periodic table look the way it
does?
Find out why the periodic
table has been set out the
way it has.
What information can the
periodic table tell us?
Has the periodic table always
looked this way?
Section 3: Do you think the
periodic table will always
look the same way?
What changes may come
about which would change
the periodic table as we
know it?
