The study: Research, Analysis & Reporting Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) was coordinated by the Vander Bilt University. In 2012 it was implemented in 26 countries with a total sample of 41632 in mainland North, Central and South America, and in the Caribbean. The AmericasBarometer measures democratic values and behaviors in the Americas based on national probability samples of voting-age adults. The study tackled fundamental social, political, and ethical problems in the Americas: the tremendous gaps in opportunities experienced and resources available to the region’s citizens. While these disparities are certainly visible in differences in economic development across countries, focus was on inequalities within the countries of the Americas as regards social and political opportunities and resources. Mobilities, Ethnicities, Territories: French Guiana between Brazil and Suriname (2013-2015) Coordinator and principal researcher of a study conducted in border states of Brazil (Amapa and north of Para), Suriname and French Guyana. The focus is on processes of ethnogenesis, the formation of a national community and on the tension between citizenship and cultural diverse societies (socalled "plural societies"). French Guiana and Suriname experienced colonial histories partly distinct, while today they have a different political status. Both societies remained late european colonies, and didnot experience the long maturation of a national ideas and nationalist movements, as has been the case, in the nineteenth century, in most countries of Latin America. The processes of reshaping and redefining go well beyond the borders inherited from colonial history. In this regard, French Guiana and Suriname are assumed to form a system within a regional area that includes the border states of Brazil (Amapa and north of Para) from where the majority of migrants originates. This idea of a system is appropriate to address the complex social and economic configurations in this region, around small scale gold mining, involving tens of thousands of Brazilian garimpeiros in the Guyanese and Surinamese territories. In the frontier area, the national and Jack Kenneth MENKE 3/12 CURRICULUM VITAE 12. Detailed Capability Work undertaken that Best Illustrates Capability political boundaries of Suriname and French Guiana are crossed by people located on both sides, who play with the differential between the two countries, implementing strategies to optimize resources provided by differential - economic resources (mainly in the informal sector), resources generated from specific social , political or cultural resources through which the actors are building new identities. Research conducted in Suriname and French Guiana. Project name: History and Nation building (2005- present) Location Suriname, Guyana and Brazil Coordinator and researcher of the Project ‘History, Ideologies and Nation building’ including a comparative study of Suriname, Guyana and Brazil, sponsored by the Foundation for Information and Development (SWI) in Suriname. The project aims to give a profound understanding of the development of Suriname throughout the twentieth century as well of the origin and process of the different nation- building of Suriname in the light of developments other multiethnic societies. The project deals with important Main Project aspects of Suriname’s history that are not yet being researched and Features discussed. Firstly, the way ‘old’ immigrants were able to find their way in society during the early decades of the twentieth century and how the ‘new’ (Brazilians, Guyanese, Chinese) immigrant groups are adapting, have not been thoroughly analyzed. The same holds for their contribution to a process of nation building. Secondly, the way ‘forgotten groups’ such as women and people from the interior, were able to survive and adapt under changing social and economic circumstances during the twentieth century, and how they contributed to development and nation building. Positions held Coordinator Research conducted in Suriname & Guyana Activities Publication ‘Natievorming en natiecreatie in Suriname, SWI, Paramaribo performed 2008’ Project name: Oral history methodology (2009- -present) In Suriname oral history and its sources constitute a large unexplored field. Among others the oral sources of the Portuguese Jews who arrived from th Brasil in Suriname in the 17 century, the black slaves, indentured workers from Indonesia, India, China and other societies (Lebanese, Syrian, etc.) people. There is still an enormous potential of oral history sources of the first and second generation of Asian indentured workers which needs to be preserved through a broad based national inventory of this heritage. Var ious unexplored fields for oral history research are traditional and folk music, food Main Project culture, popular art, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature, and oral traditions and expressions. Features One of the Oral History projects “The Atlantic World and the Dutch, 15002000” included a systematic inventory of the relevant shared oral heritage in Suriname; initiatives concerning record management and preservation; current and planned historical research projects; current and planned projects pertaining to the oral legacy of the Dutch presence in Suriname. It was part of an international project in which several countries and related institutions participate , such as Brazil, Guyana, Ghana , the USA , the Dutch Antillees and Holland (See: Website www.awad.kitlv.nl). Jack Kenneth MENKE 4/12 CURRICULUM VITAE 12. Detailed Capability Work undertaken that Best Illustrates Capability Project name: Memorials: A new methodology for societies with a complex cultural diversity (2015 – present) The memorials methodology project is a pilot to explore and use memorials as an important source. Memorials represent a way of negotiating the differences between different ethnic / cultural groups, and reconsider and rebuilt traditions in a new time and space. The interactions between and within the groups are built and expressed through memorials in public spaces. In this way memorials are an expression of the history and present dynamics of a society. Therefore, these symbolic expressions should be understood as intentional creations for the public, with the purpose to commemorate an event, or a person or a specific action that is considered important in a certain historical moment, a message, which is constantly being interpreted and reinterpreted by the society. This can enlarge people’s awareness of their history, of their positions in the society, and of the relations between the different ethnic/ cultural groups in societies with a rich cultural diversity.
