Hailed as possibly the best roast meat in Singapore by food bloggers, this humble coffee shop has been drawing locals across the island for their legendary Sio Bak (Crispy Pork Belly) and Char Siew (caramelised barbecued pork). We say, it’s our go-to for those sinful lunch days. 10 kuan food court ($) 122 neil rd At the end of Keong Saik Road sits this local hawker centre serving an array of Chinese food. The individual stalls sell different items with an average check of S$5 including drinks per pax. We recommend zooming down to the corner stall facing the main road that sells Wanton Mee (Dumpling Noodles - thin noodles with an al dente texture, served with leafy vegetables topped with black soy sauce, tomato/chilli sauce and sesame oil. 12 tong ah eating house ($) 36 keong saik rd You haven’t fully tasted Singapore if you have not taken a traditional breakfast at Tong Ah. One of the pioneer establishments in the hood since the early 1940s serving many Singapore generations. A set consists of kaya toasts, soft boiled eggs and kopi/teh (coffee/tea). Try ordering them the Singaporean way! You might need some Singlish lessons from the front desk to score some points with the kopi uncle (barista). Oh! Echoing the tongue-in-cheek concept, bar favourites include cheekily named cocktails; The Wife & The Callgirl Martini 8 lime house ($$$) 2 jiak chuan rd Singapore’s very first Caribbean restaurant with its relaxed lounge atmosphere, the Lime House has attracted the Caribbean expat community creating a communal friendly vibe. If you’re craving for some rum, this is the place to be! 15 bread & hearth ($$) 18 keong saik rd Handcrafted artisan bread & pastries, this is a go-to for fluffy croissants & viennoiseries. While space is compact, we reckon it’s great for morning brunch with a book. 16 potato head folk ($$$) 36 keong saik rd Juggling 3 personalities - a burger joint, a cocktail club and a rooftop bar overlooking the quaint neighbourhood, Potato Head is located just across Hotel 1929.
