NICHOLAS COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL On behalf of Nicholas County Elementary School, it is my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome as we begin the 2015-16 school year. We are anticipating an exciting and productive year. To those who are new to NCES, we hope you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through PTA and your child’s classroom. Mrs. Hughes and I will work diligently with parents and faculty to foster an atmosphere that promotes integrity. We are committed to developing an environ- To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world. School Based Decision Making Council Members Stacey Allison, chairman Melissa Faulkner, teacher member Krystal Gray, teacher member Tabitha Reid, teacher member Steve Stacy, parent member SBDMC Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 5:00 pm. School is a building which has four walls with tomorrow inside. FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES (free breakfast and lunch) Children who are hungry find it hard to stay alert and participate in classroom experiences. Students at NCES are encouraged to eat complete meals at school. All meals at Nicholas County Schools (breakfast and lunch) are free to all students. If your child has needs for a special diet, your family physician must complete, with signature, a Special Dietary Needs Form. You may obtain this form from the school food service manager. 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR OFF TO A GREAT START Check off the check-ups: Going back to school means making sure you have recommended birth certificates, immunizations, dental checkups, eye exams, and necessary forms turned in to the school office or homeroom teacher. SCHOOL BASED DECISION MAKING COUNCIL PARENT MEMBER NEEDED We continue our search for one parent to serve during the 2015-16 school year on our School Based Decision Making Council. SBDM Councils were established in 1990 when the Kentucky legislature passed HB940, better known as KERA. The Council has the responsibility to set school policy and make decisions which provide an environment to enhance student achievement and help meet goals. Making decisions through shared decision-making results in a greater commitment to implementing decisions that will enhance the achievement of students. Council consists of one administrator, three certified teachers, and two parents. If you would be interested in serving on Council, please call Mrs. Allison. In the event that more than one person is interested, an election would be held. SBDMC meets once a month on the third Monday at 5:00 pm. Then, select the Image-Share app, select a picture from your gallery and upload. We can’t use every photo, but it will give us lots of extras from which to choose! We have a limited number of 2015 yearbooks left over. If you didn’t get a chance to order one last spring, don’t wait!! The remaining books are going fast. Cost is $20.00. First day of school. August, 2015 PM DISMISSAL Our afternoon dismissal procedure will be the same as last year with the exception of students on town routes. Students who are picked up by parents are dismissed from the gymnasium during Group 3 dismissal. Parents will remain in their cars until 2:55 at which time they will enter the school into the side gym entrance. Designated areas are assigned for parents to wait. Parents will sign out students in the gym and students are called to the gym to meet parents at Group 3 dismissal. If your child(ren) must be dismissed before Group 3, students must be signed out in the front office. This early dismissal will, however, result in a tardy against the students’ attendance record. A new bus schedule/dismissal procedure has been put into place for students who live within the city limits. Students have been divided and placed into Group 1 or Group 2. Students in Group 1 will leave the building at 2:55 pm with all other students. Two buses (#14 and #210) will deliver group 1 students to designated drop-off points in town and then return to the school to pick up students in Group 2. Group 2 students will wait in the cafeteria and will be dismissed when Group 1 buses return. As in any other new procedures, this may take a few days to get things running smoothly, but you can be assured that our students’ safe arrival at home is of utmost importance. PLANS UNDERWAY FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION Plans are underway at least on paper and pending approval from Kentucky Department of Education for construction of the new Nicholas County Elementary School building. The architect and planners have had several meetings with our administrators and have presented drawings of the exterior of the building. Family Resource and Migrant offices have been moved into the NCES building to make way for construction to begin. Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. Bluejacket PRIDE 4th GRADE FUNDRAISER Fourth graders will be holding a candy bar fundraiser at school in the next couple of weeks in order to raise money to attend Environmental Camp. Environmental Camp is held in October and is sponsored by our Nicholas County 4-H organization. Camp is held at our local 4-H Camp and our 4th graders spend one night in the cabins (which is a first camping experience for many of our 4th graders). Meals are provided. Students attend nature walks, visit a bird blind, are involved in a pond study and dissect owl pellets. There will be designated times and areas at the school where 4th grade teachers will sell candy bars each day. Cost of candy bars is $1.00 each. Please help our 4th grade students by supporting their candy bar fundraiser.
