HWG703 Graduate English (Applicable to full-time PhD students) HWG703 prepares students for the demands of academic writing in English. All full-time PhD Students are required to attend and pass the course HWG703 Graduate English (unless exempted). Students who fail the course will have to repeat it until they pass. The course will appear in the transcript but will not be included in the GPA computation. HWG703 is administered by the Language & Communication Centre (LCC). Exemption Criteria 1. Previous Full-Time Study in English A three-year degree from an institution where English is the medium of instruction and the dissertation or final year report was written in English For items 2–3, scores obtained more than five years ago will not be accepted. 2. GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) Old GRE, taken before Aug 2011 Verbal reasoning — 600, OR OR Analytical writing — 4 3. Revised GRE, taken after Aug 2011 Verbal reasoning — 160, Analytical writing — 4 GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) Total Score (Verbal and Quantitative) of 650 For items 4–5, scores obtained more than two years ago will not be accepted. 4. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) PBT: 600 AND Essay rating 4 iBT: 100 with a minimum score of 23 for Writing 5. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Band 6.5 for the Writing sub-test AND Band 6.0 for the Speaking sub-test 6. Students of the English and Chinese divisions are exempted from this course. Note: Students must pass HWG703 (unless exempted) before they are allowed to take HWG702. As such, students cannot take both HWG703 and HWG702 in the same semester.
