LEXICOLOGIA LIMBII ENGLEZE
The connection lexicology with phonology, grammar, stylistics, history of the language and
social linguistics. The importance phonological categories in the realization of various meanings
of lexemes. The prosody of enantiosemy. Lexical and grammatical meanings. Denotative and
connotative meanings. The stylistic classification of the vocabulary. Word–meaning and
semantic change. Types of meaning. Lexical morphemes. Morphological, phonetic, semantic
motivation of word-meaning. Causes, nature and results of semantic change. Means of Wordbuilding in English. Various types of forming words. Speak on affixation. Peculiarities of

The average weather conditions throughout the year. The importance of the North Atlantic
Drift on the climate of the British Isles.
3. The colonial expansion of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The economic development of GB and the need of economic and territorial expansion.

we mean by semiotic system? What are the main terms used in the field of semiotics? Establish

3. Hermeneutics as the art of text interpretation. Explain the meaning of the term
‘hermeneutics’. Speak of an example of text interpretation in the Romanian literature classes.
4. Textual Semiotics. Characterize the semiotics of the seme and the text. Speak on the
semiotics of the signs and of the text. Describe the semiotic structure of the written and discourse
text;
5. The pragmatics of a literary text. Characterize the pragmatics of a literary text and interlingual translatability of texts using examples from your Romanian literature classes.

1. Definition of Translation. Types of Translation. Define the term translation. A diachronic
overview of translation. Describe the process of translation. Identify the types of translation.
Determine and evaluate the theories of translation.
2. The Unit of Translation. The Levels of Translation. Define the unit of translation. Identify
the levels of translation. Illustrate the translation at morphemic, word and word combination
levels. Determine the factors of identifying the translation units.
3. Techniques of Translation. Classification of Direct and Indirect Translation Procedures.
Define the term technique of translation. Identify the direct translation techniques. Characterize
the transposition, modulation and explicitation. Evaluate the adaptation as a translation
procedure.
4. Context in Translation. Handling Context- bound Words and Context-free Words in
Translation. Identify the role of context in translation. Distinguish between context-bound
words and context-free words. Evaluate the difficulties in rendering context bound words.
5. The Notion of Realia. Classification of Realia Words. Techniques Used in Rendering

6. Grammar Difficulties in Translation. Singularia and pluralia tantum nouns. Conditional and

GRAMATICA CONTRASTIVĂ
1. Method and methodology of contrastive study and research of the foreign language
grammar. The metalanguage of comparative grammar. The importance of the comparative
method of learning a foreign language. Comparison on the emic and etic levels.
2. Approaches to the comparative research of grammatical categories. The diachronic and
synchronic approaches. The categorical approach. Give examples.
3. The categorical (emic) and practical (etic) levels of contrastive research. Why should we
constantly check the emic level by practical research and analysis on the etic level? Speak on the
phenomenon of Hypergrammaticality or Hypercorrectness.
4. The importance of combining the diachronic and synchronic study of grammatical
categories. Analyze the terms „diachronic” and „synchronic”. The importance of the
diachronic and synchronic research of the categories of anteriority and aspect in English and
Romanian.
5. Grammatical, lexical, lexical grammatical and conceptual categories and categorial
forms. What are the main grammatical categories in English and Romanian? Analyze the
categorial forms of the category of mood in English and Romanian. Give examples of different
interpretations in various grammar books.
6. Polysemy, synonymy, homonymy, redundancy and transposition of verbal forms. Give
examples of homonymy of grammatical forms in constructions with ‚should’. What do we mean
by redundancy of grammatical forms in case of the category of anteriority? Speak on the stylistic
transposition of grammatical forms. Give examples of synonymous usage of some grammatical
forms in English and Romanian.
