Service Line, Tap and Meter Installation Timeframes: Service Line and Tap Columbia Gas of Kentucky (Columbia) will install the service line, tap and meter setting. Please contact the New Business Team at 800-440-6111 at least 30 days prior to needing gas service. Meter Once the service line and tap are installed, please contact the New Business Team to schedule the meter installation. How to Get a Tap: House line piping must be stubbed out of the exterior wall as follows: o 4-6 inches outside the building wall, with a threaded end for piping smaller than 2 inches, o 6-8 inches outside the building wall for piping 2 inches and larger if the connection to the meter setting will be threaded, or o 10 inches outside the building wall for piping 2 inches and larger if the connection to the meter setting will be welded. Note: House lines that will be tied into large volume meter settings should terminate 18 inches above finished grade. The meter size will be determined and communicated by the New Business Team during the application process. The area near the service line and tap needs to be clear of debris and physical obstructions and within 6” of the final grade. Note: Columbia’s crew will install the service line, tap and meter setting. They will test the service line up to the prefabricated meter setting and leave the gas off. How to Get a Meter: A house line with at least one connected appliance must be installed. All appliance drops and branch connections shall terminate with shutoff valves that are capped or plugged. IMPORTANT: We are required to inspect and test all INSTALLED gas piping and appliances at the time the meter is set. If piping enters the building, access is required and all piping and appliances must be visible and accessible. Piping must be inspected prior to drywall or backfill of buried house lines. All house line piping must be sealed to be rain and be insect resistant. Additional metallic house line requirements: Columbia requires that the piping used on the section of house lines that extends through exterior walls to connect to the meter setting be a minimum of Schedule 40 steel pipe. This section must be securely anchored inside the structure, which will enhance the stability of the meter setting. It will also simplify the placement of bonding clamps when using CSST products. Important: House line(s) and appliance(s) must have been installed in accordance with the “National Fuel Gas Code”; and manufactured home installations shall be in accordance with Title 42, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 3280, Subpart H. Multiple Meter Installations On multiple meter installations, each house line stub must be plainly and properly identified with a weatherproof tag or other approved means of designating the apartment or the part of the building it supplies. www.columbiagasky.com When the house line(s) and one natural gas appliance have been installed, inspected, and tested, the party responsible for the payment of the gas bill should call our New Business Team at 1-800-440-6111 to schedule a meter installation. The required Columbia Gas inspection and testing will be done at the time the meter is installed. Note: All material must be on Columbia’s approved material list. The Meter Drawings are available at www.columbiagasky.com. Customer Charges: The first inspection and/or test are done at no charge. If a return trip is necessary due to failure to comply with the requirements detailed above, a tag will be left at the premise stating the reason and the appropriate fee will be charged for each subsequent trip.
