Sentence: Prayer of the week

Shine
Sunday January 29: Epiphany 4
Sentence:
What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to
love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
Prayer of the week:
Living God,
in Christ you make all things new:
transform the poverty of our nature
by the riches of your grace,
and in the renewal of our lives
make known your glory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

Until I made the mistake of asking doctor Google what this word meant I never realised
what a complicated abused and misused word it actually is. Ask most people what it means
and they will probably tell you that is has something to do with happiness. To be blessed the
world tells us is to have a problem free life with little or no problems and plenty of good friends
and stuff to help make life more enjoyable. Blessed people are happy people.
In the “Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew 5, Jesus turns all of this on it’s head. Each beatitude begins with the Greek word, makarios, which is usually translated "blessed" or "happy."
"Blessed" is preferable because of its religious connotations––blessedness is a gift of God.
We use "happy" more broadly––often in ways that contradict the Beatitudes––in ways that
celebrate our power or the satisfaction of our appetites. To be truly blessed however means
to be looked on with favour, to be chosen by God, consecrated, set apart or made Holy.
While it’s not wrong to associate happiness with being blessed, it becomes a much richer
word when we discover that being happy is not a condition of being blessed. Jesus words
make so much more sense when we understand them in this way;
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, ‘Blessed are those who mourn, ‘Blessed are the meek,
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, ‘Blessed are the merciful,
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, ‘Blessed are those who are
persecuted for righteousness’ sake, ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute
you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
The good news is that as God’s chosen people we are in fact truly blessed regardless of
our situation or circumstances. Why not take some time over the coming days, to reflect on
each of the beatitudes in Matthew 5, and then give thanks to God that he has chosen you.
Till next time. Andrew

OFFERINGS
One of the best ways of supporting the life and mission of our church
is by setting up a direct debit with the Anglican Development Fund.
ADF Planned Giving is the preferred method of giving directly, as it is
completely anonymous. You can choose to give out of any bank
account or credit card, and can give on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. You also receive a book of tickets to put into the collection
plate each week. Details of how to do this are available from the
back of each church or you can contact the ADF direct.
