I am really pleased that people feel that they can
come into my office and ask me anything! I do have
an open door policy. Sometimes the door is closed
when I am writing grants, and even in that small
instance Debbi usually tries to help whomever may be wishing
to speak to me. If it is important, and can’t wait, she will get my
attention.
One of the questions asked of me was, “Can I bring my own lunch to Lunch
and Learn, and skip paying the Activity Fee?” The answer is yes, of course you
can bring your own lunch; however, the fee will remain the same. The reason
for this is that we actually have cost associated with each Lunch and Learn. We
pay our Wellness Coordinator – Colleen Morton, R.N to find interesting
speakers/educators, to purchase and provide a nutritious lunch, and for her time
managing our wellness programs that she provides. So, is it fair that people
could partake of the speaker and ask questions, without paying the Activity Fee,
just because they bring their own lunch? Well, no it really isn’t. Please keep
this in mind. I hope that not only did this answer the person who asked, but
maybe answered it for all those who were also wondering. Thank you for the
question and the opportunity to answer it.
The other question asked of me was, “Can we play cards and/or games in the
Board/Library Room?” The answer, honestly, is that we prefer to have that
room be left open - except for meetings - for those wishing to use the Library.
We, the staff and Board of Directors, use that room for various meetings. We do
not place all the meetings on the Calendar as most meetings are short notice.
We have staff meetings, group meetings, advisory board meetings, fundraising
meetings, golf tournament meetings and many more that can be last minute
requests. We will always look at the Back Room and/or the Craft Room first, and
then maybe the lobby area, before agreeing to the use of the Board/Library
room. I hope that answers it for all of you that were wondering. We can only
hope that one day (even if a dream) we will have a little more space to use!
One area of concern the staff brought to my attention was the noise level
when one event is ending and the next one will begin soon. People gather in the
hallway just before entering the Great Room where the event is happening and
begin talking, or they gather around the sign-in counter when they’re getting
ready to leave on a trip. What the staff would like to see is that while you are
waiting to leave for a trip, please gather in the lobby outside our office area
until the vehicle is ready for loading, and please keep the noise down when
waiting to enter the Great Room for an event when one has not let out yet.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Volunteer of the Month
June Volunteer: Jim Decker
Jim Decker is a remarkable person. Born in Brighton under
extraordinary circumstances, his grandmother, a country midwife, delivered
him at home in the middle of a January snowstorm while at the same time
delivering his soon-to-be cousin. This native Coloradan attended North
High School in Denver, and then joined the Navy after graduation.
Following his deployment to Guam, Jim joined Lockheed-Martin (which
become Martin-Marietta) and would met his future bride, Sharon, there - as
she just happened to be his bosses’ secretary!
Jim worked for Martin Marietta for 38 years, and raised four kids, three
daughters and a son, with Sharon. This past February marked 44 years of
marriage together! In addition to this, Jim and Sharon have three
granddaughters and one great grandson. After spending many years as a
city boy, he became a country man in 1979 with a move to Franktown.
There he would learn to ride a horse he had acquired, and his country
adventures began. One such adventure included Fox Hunting on his big
buckskin horse, complete with English hunting attire (although in Colorado
coyotes substitute for foxes)! Can’t you just hear him saying “Pip Pip
Cheerio!?”
They sold their home in Franktown in 1997, when Jim retired, and spent the next three and a half years on the
road traveling the U.S. in their RV. After returning to the Rocky Mountain state, they spent summers here and
winters in Texas. They called the Southern Texas coast their winter home near Padre Island and Brownsville. They
have spent time in both Europe and in Costa Rica on mission trips. As a man of faith, Jim’s volunteer efforts have
included clearing land for a new church in Costa Rica with a machete, working their Men’s Ministry, teaching Bible
studies, along with other projects. His faith is very important to him. As a volunteer shuttle and events driver for
the Castle Rock Senior Center, Jim has been very active for many years, including helping with several of our
fundraisers - Craft Show, Golf Tournament, etc.
Jim also is active with the Friday Current Events group and will be starting to help with the computer instruction
for the Center. In addition, he has served as a leader for 4-H Douglas County Horse club for a number of years. His
hobbies include playing on his computer, watching old movies and reading. He belongs to a camping club that
camps each month during the summer.
Jim, thank you for all that you do and making your mark on the Center.

Headaches….we all have them for a variety of reasons, but when should you be
Castle Rock Senior Center
concerned? Tension headaches, caused by tight muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp
and jaw are the most common. Many people suffer from diagnosed migraine headaches
which can be severe and associated with other symptoms such as vision changes or
nausea. Sinus headaches cause pain in the front of our head and face. These are due to swelling in your nasal passages
behind your cheeks, nose and eyes. The pain is often worse when you first wake up and if you bend forward, which increases the pressure in these areas. A swollen, inflamed artery which supplies blood to part of your head, temple and neck
area that can cause headaches in a disorder called temporal arteritis.
But, when should you be concerned and seek immediate medical help (call 911)?
Your headache comes on suddenly and is severe – explosive and violent
You would describe your headache as your worst ever, even if you regularly get headaches
You also have slurred speech, a change in vision, problems moving your arms or leg, loss of
balance, confusion, or memory loss
If you headache gets worse over a 24 hour period
You also have a fever, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting with your headache
Your headache occurs with a head injury
Your headache is severe and just in one eye, with redness in that eye
You are over 50 and your headaches just began, especially if you also have vision problems and
pain while chewing
You have cancer and develop a new headache
All these symptoms could mean that you have more than just a headache going on – like a stroke,
meningitis, or high blood pressure. Seeking medical help quickly could save you or a loved one’s’ life.

a lung function test – on Wednesday, June 5th. This five minute test, a $100 value, is performed by a National Jewish
Medical Center RN and you will receive results you can give your doctor. On Wednesday, June 12 th, we are lucky
enough to be a stop for the Zimmer Orthopedic Educational Bus on a national tour. You can visit it in our parking lot
and learn about all types of joint replacements. Have a great month!

Did we mention that it’s FREE?

"Why Do You See An
Orthopedist?"
According to Colleen, everyone should have a baseline
test to give your physician something to compare to if
you become ill. Often a minor pulmonary obstruction
can be detected that you weren’t aware of. Sometimes
people just become accustomed to being tired or short
of breath, but once treated, feel so much better. If you
do have lung problems, you should routinely have this
screening test done to see how you are doing.

30 Minute Sessions
Cost: $15 ($18 non-members) at time of service
What is Foot Reflexology? Reflexology is a holistic natural therapy that works on the
principle that energy balance will lead to increased vitality and greater enjoyment of
life. How does it work? Irene, our Reflexology Therapist, uses thumbs and fingertips
to press special points of the sole and back of the foot. This special pressing
stimulates the meridians (energy pathways) to flow. The meridians correspond to the
organs, glands and muscles in the body. Blockades can be eliminated to allow energy
to flow through the body. This helps with pain management, stress relief, and allergies
while promoting relaxation and preservation of your well being.

This month’s hike on the 5 mile Dawson Butte Trail, a Douglas

with some open meadows and views of the Front Range
Mountains. The loop trail follows gently rolling terrain with only
about a 200 foot elevation gain. Elk, bear, mountain lion and
many other species call this land home.

a difficult time choosing just one entrée. Their Calamari is famous. Activity Fee

see!! Ballroom with a Twist has been choreographed by Dancing with the Stars
own Louis van Amstel and will feature DWTS Stars pros Jonathan Roberts,

SCENIC COLORADO TRIP - Mount Evans
Friday, June 14 8:30 AM $16 ($19 non-members)
We live in a gorgeous state, so for something we know you will love, we will
occasionally offer a Scenic Colorado Trip to get out and see more of our state.
Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in the country. It is the
closest fourteener, over 14,000 foot mountain, to Denver, and Trip Advisor says
it is the second best attraction in Denver. On this trip, our bus will transverse a
number of ecosystems with stunning views, wildlife and wildflowers. We will
stop at the Mount Goliath Natural Area with Bristlecone Pines as old as 1600
years and is also known as a songbird area. We will travel as high as Summit
Lake, at 12,830 feet, for spectacular views. Lunch (on your own) will be on the
way down the mountain at the Echo Lake Lodge, a log cabin said to have
wonderful hamburgers - but be sure to save room for pie. We will return by
4:30.
OUT TO DINNER — Earls Kitchen & Bar, at Park Meadows
Monday, June 17 4:45 PM $5 ($8 non-members)
Earls is a classic American restaurant which serves a wide variety of menu
items, from Angus beef burgers, to seafood, juicy steaks and everything in
between. The restaurant has an understated elegance to it, which is why it has
become a favorite south suburban dinner choice. Activity Fee does not include
the cost of your individual dinner.

You don’t want to miss a Senior’s 30% Discount Day at Saver’s, which already

Did you know that there is a 1450’s Scottish-style castle, which was built in the
1920’s, just outside of Castle Rock? Cherokee Ranch and Castle was private
property until 1996, when it was opened to the public and is protected land
through a Douglas County Conservation Easement. Join us for a tour of this
historic land and facility. The hour and a half tour will involve walking, standing
and stairs to climb, without an elevator. No big purses are allowed inside the
Castle. We will stop for lunch (on your own) at Terra Cotta Café before
returning to the Center.

Hall in Lakewood! Bingo costs and food purchases not included in Activity Fee.

Church, one of our most historic eateries. Activity Fee does not include the cost

What if you could fit an entire library’s
collection in the palm of your hand? That is
part of the idea behind an upcoming “bookless”
public library in San Antonio, a digital-only
library.
Yes, maybe you could find what you need
easily with an online collection. However, for
me, the touch and feel of a book is exciting! I
think that our generation likes to hold a book or
newspaper in our hands and feel the words on
paper!
YOU NEED TO KNOW
Are you 65+ and lived in your primary residence for 10 years as of January 1, 2013?
If so you are eligible for the Colorado Senior Real Estate Tax Exemption. The
exemption assesses your residence at zero for the first $100,000 of assessed value.
To apply for the real estate tax exemption contact the Douglas County Assessor's
office for the form and submit the form by the Sept. 15, 2013, deadline.
Our library at the Senior Center is overflowing
with books, and I am happy about that. The
library is now in the process of getting books
sorted and organized for us to make room for
more to come in. We have our biggest book
sale of the year at our Craft Show in the fall. If
you are one of those people who like to keep
and re-read books, plan to come make some
purchases.
Made possible with a FASTER Grant,
with funding generated
from late vehicle
registrations in
Colorado
I want to thank all of the library volunteers for
all their hard work keeping our library up and
running.
