A local`s guide to Hollywood

Hollywood
A local's guide to
Hollywood
I lived in Hollywood for eight years,
exploring its history and watching
its transformation. Based on my
tips in the February 2014 issue of
Sunset.

Many locals don't even know his place
exists. Walk or bike the three-mile trail
around the lake, including the grand
1920s dam, then walk up to the sign.

Have sunset cocktails and sushi in the
garden of this beautiful Japanese
restaurant high above Hollywood. In the
summer there's a weekly farmers
market, too.
I'm a brunch fanatic and there is
nowhere better to sit for a few hours
and pick at a massive platter of fresh
seafood while sipping a greyhound or
bloody mary.
This new place has everything I need in
life: Amazing cocktails (by mixology
gurus Proprietors), great wine, and the
best thin-crust pizza I've had in LA.

A gorgeous 1920s theater dripping with
glamour that also has some of the most
innovative screenings and programs. I
saw a roller disco triple feature here
once.
The city's best design bookstore is
nestled in the awesome Space 15 Twenty
complex that has art shows, parties,
concerts and pop-up boutiques.
A sliver of a space next door to the
Pantages Theater is pure Hollywood dive
bar. The Al Hirschfield mural inside
features celebrities from a bygone era.
A friendly little neighborhood sushi spot
that's beloved by locals. I love the spicy
tuna and crispy rice, seared albacore, and
crab hand rolls.

A classic Hollywood institution for
almost 100 years. Ask Ruben to make you
a martini and Sergio to be your waiter
for dinner. They'll both tell you stories.

I love getting lost on the staircases and
trails of this historic neighborhood. Start
with lunch at Beachwood Cafe and ask
for directions to the stairs.

You'll see both celebrities and celebrity
chefs here gathering produce for the
week. Look for fresh oysters, goat
cheese, and the excellent Delmy's
pupusas.
Amazing tacos and stewed meats like
cochinita pibil and a fresh jalapeño juice
margarita. They also have chicharron de
queso, which is indeed fried cheese.

One of the best places to see up and
coming comedians is nestled in this tiny
strip of stores and restaurants where you
can spend an entire day hanging out.
This little cluster of stores features
excellent designers both local and
international with a modern, colorful
aesthetic. Great for birthday and baby
presents.
