Activity 6: Volcanic History of your Community DO NOW: 10/25/10 Make an entry in the notebook • Activity 6: Volcanic History of your Community pg 927 • Make a heading Think about it and do the question • Make another heading investigate Rock cycle Investigate Part A: Rock Samples (DO NOT USE THE PICTURES IN THE BOOK!) Use this key to the rock numbers in your answers: 9 – Breccia 53- Pumice 61- Rhyolite 47 or 49- Obsidian 30- Granite 37- Andesite 76 – Welded Tuft 7 – Basalt scoria 6 – Basalt When part A asks you to organize the rocks be sure to write down the NAMES of the rocks Investigate Part A: Step 2 a) and b) Look at the mostly local rock collected around our community (Washington State)- make a table and describe your rock Sample # Size of grains color volcanic? anything else? #1 Be ready to share out your rock and write down the other rock characteristics 10/26/10 • DO NOW: What kind of rock was mostly blown out of the Mount saint Helens big eruption at first? • Agenda • Do part B of the investigation, go over digging deeper. • Notebook check set up. Geological Time scale The age of most rocks are reported as a nameLook at time span to see about how old the rock is. For example: I found some basalt from the miocene epochwhich is 5 to 23 million years old! Investigate Part B: Geological Maps • step 2: Use the state map to look for patterns – by answering these questions • a. What is the pattern in terms where the older vs. newer rocks are • b. where are the volcanic rocks vs. the intrusive/metamorphic/sedimentary rock? • c. what is the primary feature of the puget sound? • for step 3a- skip and leave several lines we will go back and do this one together. • For step 4a go back to the state geological map Step 3a we do together • using the list of volcanic rocks from part A compare using the website found on the classroom calendar (or use this link http://home.comcast.net/~wa_geology/ind ex.html? • Go to one of the volcanoes and look for volcanic rocks! • Find and list least 3 rock formations with the rock names from Part A and complete part 4a). (look at geological time handout provided for age of the rocks!) If teachers do not have access or time to go to the website • Here are some screen shots of volcanic rocks on Mount Rainier for Activity 6 Mount Rainier Area Mount Rainier Area Mount Rainier Area Mount Rainier Area Do now 10/27/20 This is a file photo of Mount Merapi, Indonesia. It is a stratovolcano that is erupting now. Look very carefully, describe any possible hazards you see and how to reduce the hazard. YOU MAY NEED TO look closely !!!!! Do now 10/27/20 • • • • Volcanic Villages on Merapi Photograph by John Stanmeyer, National Geographic Carving its slopes with steppes, farmers have set up croplands and villages as far up Mount Merapi's ridges as possible (file photo). The attraction of Merapi's rich volcanic soils is apparently greater than the threat of burning lava, toxic gas, or smothering mud from one of the word's most active and dangerous volcanoes. Worldwide, volcanic soils cover only one percent of Earth's land but feed about 10 percent of all people, according to National Geographic magazine. (Read more about Mount Merapi and other Indonesian volcanoes.)
