Business Intelligence Statistical Bulletin November 2016 2015 Mid-year population estimates: Ward level population in Kent Related information The Population and Census web page contains further information which you may find useful. This bulletin presents the 2015 Mid-year population estimates at ward level for Kent as published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 26 October 2016. Annual change since Mid-year 2014 is also presented. . Population change presents a time-series of population estimates and an analysis of population growth Data for the new wards in Canterbury, Shepway, Swale and Tonbridge & Malling which came in to effect as of May 7 2015 is presented. Further details on page 2. Population forecasts presents the latest thinking about future population levels Summary of findings In 2015 the average population size of a ward in Kent was 5,690 people. The ward with the largest population is Heron in Canterbury with 13,500 people. The ward with the smallest population is Eynsford in Sevenoaks with only 1,860 people. In Kent, 177 wards (67%) have seen a growth in population in the past 12 months. Joyce Green ward in Dartford has seen the highest increase in both number and percentage with an additional +669 people (+12.8%). 85 Kent wards (33%) have seen a loss in population between Mid-2014 and Mid-2015. Sheppey East ward in Swale experienced the greatest decrease in population in real terms with a loss of -615 people (-8.8%). St.Margaret’s-at-Cliffe ward in Dover experienced the greatest percentage decrease in population with a loss of -10.3% (-615 people). 2011 Census provides information of the characteristics of the population NOTE: within this bulletin ’Kent’ refers to the Kent County Council (KCC) area which excludes Medway Strategic Business Development & Intelligence Kent County Council Sessions House Maidstone Kent ME14 1XQ Email: [email protected] Tel: 03000 417444 Strategic Business Development & Intelligence, Kent County Council www.kent.gov.uk/research Ward boundary changes in Kent. As of May 2015 new ward boundaries came into effect in Canterbury, Shepway, Swale and Tonbridge & Malling. These changes bring the number of wards within the Kent from 283 in 2011 to 268 in 2015. The 2015 ward level population estimates have been released to these new wards. The 2014 ward estimates presented in this bulletin have been created by Kent County Council by aggregating the 2014 population estimates at Output Area (OA) to these new ward boundaries on best fit basis to enable us to provide an annual change. Introduction Mid-Year Population Estimates, or MYPE are derived from a census population count and each year are rolled forward (people aged by one year) allowing for changes recorded for births, deaths and migration. Additional allowances are made to model the transient population such as students and personnel from the armed forces. This modelling process provides fairly robust data for larger areas of geography but the margin for error is larger for small areas, which is why these ward level MYPE are classed as ‘experimental statistics’. The ward level MYPE data presented in this bulletin are based on population data recorded through the 2011 Census. When a new census is taken all historic estimates up to the year prior to that census are re-based to reflect the population counts recorded via the latest census results. The ONS has revised all historic ward level population estimates from mid-2002 through to mid-2010 in-line with the findings of the 2011 Census. This time-series for Kent wards is available in Excel format upon request. This bulletin presents the total population at ward level. The 2015 Mid-year population estimates by 5yr age group and sex at ward level are available within the ward profiles on the KCC website Note on the data It is ONS policy to present all estimates rounded to the nearest hundred at local authority level and to the nearest ten at ward level. Within this bulletin all mid-year estimates have been individually rounded and therefore may not sum. Percentages have been calculated using unrounded numbers. The data in this bulletin will be updated in Autumn 2017 when the 2016 MidYear Population Estimates will be released. Strategic Business Development & Intelligence, Kent County Council www.kent.gov.uk/research Page 2 Rural and urban classification The ‘2011 Rural Urban Classification for Small Area Geographies’ or RUC for short was released in August 2013. The RUC was developed for a consortium of government agencies for use with the 2001 Census and revised following the 2011 Census for a similar consortium including the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG), the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and the Welsh Government (WG). The new wards which came into effect in May 2015 in Canterbury, Shepway, Swale and Tonbridge & Malling have been categorised by matching the new boundaries with the 2011 boundaries on a best fit basis by Business Intelligence at Kent County Council. There are eight separate classifications for wards which are grouped into either Urban or Rural types as illustrated in Figure1: Figure 1: 2011 rural-urban classification of 2011 electoral wards in England and Wales A1 = Urban major conurbation Urban B1 = Urban minor conurbation C1 = Urban city and town C2 = Urban city and town in a sparse setting D1 = Rural town and fringe Rural D2 = Rural town and fringe in a sparse setting E1 = Rural village and dispersed E2 = Rural village and dispersed in a sparse setting Urban totals are created from all wards classified as A1, B1, C1 and C2 and rural totals are created by adding together data for wards classified as D1,D2, (town and fringe) and E1 and E2 (rural village). Kent and Medway wards are categorised as A1, C1, D1 and E1. These are illustrated in Map 1. Strategic Business Development & Intelligence, Kent County Council www.kent.gov.uk/research Page 3 Within this bulletin and in the ward profiles we group the wards into urban and rural areas and identify individual towns such as Maidstone, Tonbridge and Canterbury plus smaller rural settlements such as Tenterden, Pembury and Sandwich. For further information on the Rural Urban Classification (RUC) 2011 please visit the Office for National Statistics website. www.statistics.gov.uk Rural and urban area population The number of people living in urban areas within Kent in 2015 was just over 1.1million. This is a rise of +12,400 people (+1.1%) since 2014. In 2015 the population living in rural areas was 403,300 people. This is a rise of +1,900 people, (+0.5%) since 2014. People living in urban areas make up 74% of the Kent population but they only occupy 23% of the total land area. The remaining 26% of the population live in rural areas but occupy 77% of the land in Kent.
