Science 7 Ecosystems Unit Review 1.0 – Ecosystems are made of living and non-living things 1) What do all living things need to survive? (6 basic needs) 2) List some things that humans have that they do not need to survive: 2.0 – Ecosystems are interactions between biotic and abiotic components 1) What needs to be present for an ecosystem to exist? (see definition) 2) What is the difference between biotic and abiotic things? List 3 biotic components and 3 abiotic components in an ecosystem we explored this semester. 3) What is one thing all ecosystems have in common (in your notes and textbook!!) 3.0 – Ecosystems are made of producers, consumers, and decomposers that interact to form food chains and food webs 1) List 3-4 examples of each: Producer, Consumer, Herbivore, Omnivore, Decomposer, Scavenger 2) Create 3 different food chains using the living things from the previous question. Make sure to use arrows to show how the food chain is connected and label each section of the food chain. 3) Create a food web using 6-7 of the living things from question 2. Again, make sure to use arrows to show how each living thing is connected. 4) If one of the top carnivores in your food web disappears what happens to the rest of the food web? 5) What special role do decomposers and scavengers have in an ecosystem? 4.0 – Matter and energy are necessary in all ecosystems 1) Describe what happens to water after we use it, by explaining and/or drawing the Water Cycle. 2) Explain what happens if the carbon cycle does not stay balanced? 3) Draw or write out the word equation for Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. How are they different? 4) When plants use nitrogen to grow, is the nitrogen used up and gone forever? Explain what happens to the nitrogen in plants by using the nitrogen cycle. 5) Explain how Energy moves through ecosystems vs. how Matter moves through ecosystems? Are they the same or different? 5.0 – Natural changes can cause changes in Ecosystems 1. Give an example of a species, population and community. 2. How can competition and human activities effect the survival of a species? 3. What is the difference between primary and secondary succession? 4. Given an example of a pioneer species. 6.0 – Human activities can change ecosystems 1. How do humans alter ecosystems NEGATIVELY? 2. What positive influences can humans have on ecosystems? 3. What is sustainable development? 4. Identify one way (EACH) that you could reduce your impact on the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling. (state one way to reduce, one way to reuse and one way to recycle “waste”). 7.0 – Technologies have been developed to manage wastes that humans generate 1. What are the four methods we use to get rid of waste? 2. Choose one of the methods above and identify two positives and two negatives of this method.
