Spring 2017 English Speech Contest

I. Contest Time and Place:
A.
Date: Monday, March 27, 2017
B.
Time: check-in at 3:15 p.m.; contest at 3:40 p.m.
C.
Place: 4th International Meeting Room, Ren-Yan Building
II. Eligibility:
a. Any Feng Chia student who has not lived in an English-speaking country beyond the age of
five;
b. Any Feng Chia student who has not studied in an English-only school for more than two
years.
III. Registration:
Registration Deadline: Friday, March 24, 2017
Registration Place: Department of Foreign Languages and Literature Office, R803, Ren-Yan
Building
IV. Contest:
A. Round One:
1. Give a 2-minute prepared speech on the topic: "Cultural Differences"
2. Notes are allowed, but you may not read your speeches.
3. Ten minutes before the contest, contestants will draw lots to decide their presentation order.
4. The top eight contestants will proceed to Round Two.
B. Round Two:
1. Give a 2-minute impromptu speech based on a topic drawn after Round One.
2. 10 minutes preparation time and notes may be used when delivering the speech.
3. The Round Two contestants will draw lots to decide the speech order.
V. Timekeeping:
A. Timing begins when the contestant begins speaking.
B. A warning sign will be raised at 1.5 minutes and the warning bell will ring at 2 minutes.
C. When the bell rings, the contestant will have 15 seconds to complete the speech before
being asked to stop.
VI. Scoring:
Scores will be weighted as follows:
35% Engli sh Ability:
Pronunciation, Fluency, and Grammar
35% Speech Content:
Organization and Structure, and depth of Thought and Emotion
30% Presentation Skills: Audibility, Facial Expression, Gesture, Audience Communication

Prizes: 1st Prize--NT$3,000; 2nd Prize--NT$2,000; 3rd Prize--NT$1,500; 4th Prize --NT$1,000
