Intro to Seesaw Summer 2016 You need your iPad – you can set your laptop aside for the moment Wi-Fi Code for USD489_OLOUGHLIN: horseglue Download the apps from the App Store: Seesaw: The Learning Journal Pic Collage Kids Scannable by Evernote Objectives • Share to Seesaw as a Student • Create and configure your Seesaw class • Share to Seesaw as a Teacher • Invite Parents to Join First Let’s Play a Game: Golf Ball Drop • You have 12 straws, 18 inches of masking tape, scissors and a golf ball • Build a contraption with the straws and tape that will catch your golf ball from a height of 10 feet • Take pictures to document your building project (at least one person should take 5 or 6 pictures) • In 10 minutes, each group will demonstrate their building project • Demonstration guidelines: • One person will stand on a chair (choose wisely) and drop the ball into the contraption • A second person can use one hand to steady the contraption but may not assist the contraption in catching the ball • A third person should video their team’s demonstration End Make a Collage • AirDrop the photos you took to each other so you can each participate in this activity • Open Pic Collage Kids app • Create a new project by tapping the + sign in the top right corner • Add pics, text, stickers, or a background by tapping the + sign at the bottom of your screen • You have 5 minutes • When you’re finished, tap the Share Square and your collage is automatically added to your camera roll (tap the back arrow to exit sharing) 5 minutes End Being a Seesaw Student • Open the Seesaw app and select “I’m a Student” • Select “Email/Google Account” in the bottom right corner • Select “New Student?” at the bottom of your screen • Select “Create Email Account” or “G+ Use Google Account” • Enter the Join Code: • Create your account by providing your First and Last Name, your email address and a password – WRITE IT DOWN! Share Your Video or Collage • Each person in your team should share his/her collage • The person who took the video can also share that as well • Tap the in the top right corner • Select Camera Roll • Select the image or video you want to share • Tap the in the top right corner to finish Six Options for Sharing • Photo – uses the camera to take a pic and then draw, type or use the voice recorder to enhance what you’ll share • Video – uses the camera to take a video, then title it and share to Seesaw • Drawing – features pen, text and voice recorder (fixed space) • Note – features text and voice recorder (fixed space) • Link – copy a URL from Safari and share instantly in Seesaw • Camera Roll – select any pic or video in your Camera Roll to share instantly in Seesaw Completing Work as a Student • As your “teacher”, I’ve just handed out a paper to you • Open the file by tapping on the picture of it • Tap the Share Square in the bottom left corner • Select “Open PDF in…” • Scroll over and select “Copy to Notability” • When Notability opens, select “Create New Note” and then “Import” • Do some scribbling to act out completing the student work Sending Work Back to Seesaw • Tap the Share Square and select “Share” at the bottom • Select “Share Note” and then the Seesaw icon • Select the when your name appears Being a Teacher in Seesaw • Sign out of the student account you’re using • Tap “I’m a Teacher” • Tap “Create Account” • Enter your First and Last Name, your email (probably school email) address and a password – WRITE IT DOWN! • Tap the in the top right corner • Scroll through and read the intro slides Configuring Your Class • At the end of the intro slides, you’ll see two questions • Will your students share devices when using Seesaw? Select No. • Do your students already use their own email/password to sign in to other school-related resources? Select Yes. • Tap the in the top right corner after selecting your answers • Tap the blue “Use Email/Google” • Enter the name of your class and select a grade level • Tap the in the top right corner on this and the next screen • Seesaw will now ask you about notifications – that’s up to you Managing Your Class • Select your initials in the top left corner • Select “Manage Class” from the menu • You can add a teacher or para by selecting “Manage teachers” • Select “Student like and comments” to decide if students can like or comment on other students’ submissions • Toggle on/off to decide if students can see each other’s work • Toggle on/off to decide if you’ll approve each submission • Toggle on/off to enable item editing – with it on, students will be able to edit their own work, and “copy and edit” work posted into other journals they can see (if any) Managing Your Class - Parents • Under Parents, toggle on/off to enable parent access • Select “Invite parents” – then “Get Parent Invite Handout” or “Send Parent Invite Email” • Both generate a letter to the parent about Seesaw that walks them through creating an account or adding an additional child to an alreadyexisting account Managing Your Class - Parents • Select “Manage parents” to see whose parents have accepted your invite to join your class – you can also invite or remove parents by tapping on each child • Select “Pending parent approvals” to make sure a parent has selected the right student before approving his/her addition to your class • Select “Parent likes, comments and sharing” to enable the following features • • • • Parent sharing Parent likes Parent comments Approval of parent comments Seesaw Blog Folders in Seesaw • Select “Manage Folders” • “+ New Folder” – give it a name and choose a color • Great way to organize student work • Parents cans see all folders • Select “Show add to folder step” to decide who uses your organizational system Other Features in Seesaw • Toggle on/off “Save to camera roll” to enable photos/videos captured with the Seesaw app to be saved automatically to the Camera Roll • Video Quality – select the type of video quality you would like your videos on Seesaw to be uploaded with – Medium is recommended Sharing to Seesaw as a Teacher • Files from OneDrive – easiest from your laptop using the web version at web.seesaw.me • Laptop – go to web.seesaw.me and click the in the top right corner and select “Upload Files” and then “Browse” to choose files from your computer or OneDrive • iPad – open the OneDrive app – press and hold to select the file you want to share and then tap the ellipses (…) in the bottom right corner. Select “Open in Another App” and then the Seesaw icon – you can select the ribbon at the bottom if the class to which you want to share is not the first to pop up, then select “Everyone” or individuals. Lastly, tap the in the top right corner. Better Than a Note in the Backpack • Need to remind parents to send an item to school? Use Seesaw! • You can add a “Note” from your own smart phone in the Seesaw app that will notify parents in the Parent app • Want to share a classroom experience with all students and parents?
