CHARLIE O’HEARN President/Founder Summit Educational Group Classroom Programs Whether it is SAT, ACT, or SSAT prep, the answer is simple: no other company offers the quality, results, and care found in a Summit program. We currently partner with many of the most demanding independent and public schools in New England. But no two schools are alike, and neither are any two Summit programs. We know that every school has a unique student body with different needs, and we’ll work with them to customize the best program for their students and culture. Course Materials and Services Summit has developed, and continues to perfect, a suite of proven, results-driven course materials which helps students improve critical thinking skills and develop effective test-taking strategies, leading to higher scores. Our course books, test analysis, and professional development have helped hundreds of schools and tutoring companies worldwide generate higher test scores for their students. Practice Testing Each program begins with a diagnostic test and detailed score report that identifies strengths and areas for improvement. This allows our tutors to customize their instruction accordingly. Real practice tests throughout the program allow students to practice what they’ve learned and provide valuable information on how they’re progressing. We also offer free proctored practice tests in the community, affording students the opportunity to take “dress rehearsal” tests, so they know exactly what to expect on the real thing. However, independent school admission offices have historically relied more on percentile ranks than on scaled scores. SSAT essays are not scored. Copies of your essay are sent to schools along with your score report. The importance of your essay in admissions decisions varies from school to school, but it is generally much less important than your percentile rank. Raw Scores Percentiles Every question on the SSAT is worth one raw point. Your section scaled scores and total scaled score The easiest question is worth just as much as the most difficult question. There are no points for skipped questions. Each incorrect answer results in a ¼ point penalty. The total number of correct answers, minus the total penalty for incorrect SSAT answers, is the raw score. Scaled Scores Your raw score is converted to a scaled score. Each SSAT has a slightly different scale to account for any small differences between tests. As a result, no test are given percentile ranks, indicating how well you scored compared to other test-takers of the same grade and gender. For example, a 60th percentile score indicates that you performed the same as or better than 60% of test-takers. Your percentile rank is based on scores from all students in your grade who have taken the test over the past three years. You should never ignore information from any of these potential clues. Eliminating answer choices that you know are wrong gets you closer to finding the right answer. It also means that you will do better if you need to guess. Improving your ability to make educated guesses is an important step toward a higher score. Practice with timed essays is essential for creating a well-structured, well-supported, and wellwritten essay. Writing an essay under such time constraints is an unusual assignment. Be sure to time yourself while writing practice essays so you can find the right pace. While the SSAT essay is not scored, it is sent to school admissions committees, and it can still be an important part of your application. Middle Level The Middle Level SSAT gives students a choice between two creative prompts. Students should choose one prompt as inspiration for a short story. Each level of the test is intended for multiple grades: • Lower Level Students in grades 4-5, applying to grades 5-6 • Middle Level Students in grades 6-7, applying to grades 7-8 • Upper Level Students in grades 8-11, applying to grades 9-12 The ISEE measures verbal, math, and reading skills needed for successful performance in independent schools. Different Grades, Different Testing Experiences Taking the ISEE can be a very different experience depending on the grade level of the student. For example, students in grades 8 to 11 take the Upper Level ISEE, so 8th graders will likely encounter some material that is more advanced than what they have learned in school. On the other hand, 11th graders will likely have previously encountered all of the material on the test. Keep in mind that your scores are compared only to those of students in the same grade, so there is no scoring advantage or disadvantage to taking the test at a certain grade level. The ISEE contains elements of both aptitude (like the ISEE SSAT) and curriculum-based testing. 28 Summit Educational Group | SSAT & ISEE Testing Guide 2016 – 2017 ISEE LEVELS & STRUCTURE QUESTIONS* TIME (MINUTES) VERBAL REASONING 34 20 QUANTITATIVE REASONING 38 35 TEST LEVEL Lower Level Students in grades 4-5, applying to grades 5-6 SECTION 760-940 5-minute break in each of READING COMPREHENSION 25 25 MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT 30 30 4 sections Essay not 5-minute break ESSAY SCALED SCORES scored 1 30 TOTAL TIME: 2 hours 20 minutes 40 20 QUANTITATIVE REASONING 37 35 5-minute break Middle Level Students in grades 6-7, applying to grades 7-8 760-940 in each of ISEE VERBAL REASONING 4 READING COMPREHENSION 36 35 MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT 47 40 sections Essay not 5-minute break scored ESSAY 1 30 TOTAL TIME: 2 hours 40 minutes Upper Level Students in grades 8-11, applying to VERBAL REASONING 40 20 QUANTITATIVE REASONING 37 35 5-minute break READING COMPREHENSION 36 35 MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT 47 40 grades 9-12 4 sections Essay not 5-minute break ESSAY 760-940 in each of 1 30 scored TOTAL TIME: 2 hours 40 minutes * Each section of the ISEE (excluding the essay) includes several experimental questions that will not be scored but may be used on future editions of the test. Stanines Ranging from 1-9, stanines are groupings of percentile scores. See the table on the next page for how percentiles are grouped into stanines. A relatively small percent of students will achieve stanine scores that are very high or very low. Stanine scores create a bell curve, so that the majority of students achieve “average” stanine scores of 4-6. Practice with timed essays is essential for creating a well-structured, well-supported, and well-written essay. Writing an essay under such time constraints is an unusual assignment. Be sure to time yourself while writing practice essays so you can find the right pace. While the ISEE essay is not scored, it is sent to school admissions committees, and it can still be an important part of your application. Essay Directions "The essay is designed to give you an opportunity to show how well you can write. You should try to express your thoughts clearly. How well you write is much more important than how much you write, but you need to say enough for a reader to understand what you mean. You will probably want to write more than a short paragraph. You should also be aware that a copy of your essay will be sent to each school that will be receiving your test results. You are to write only in the appropriate section of the answer sheet. Please write or print so that your writing may be read by ISEE someone who is not familiar with your handwriting." Sample Prompts Lower Level prompts: • What are the best qualities of a person you admire? • Explain a hobby you have that makes you special. Middle Level prompts: • Describe your ideal future career. • Discuss a problem in the world that you would like to solve and how you would solve it. Upper Level prompts: • What accomplishment are you most proud of? Describe this accomplishment and why it makes you feel proud. • Describe an experience that has inspired you. 36 Summit Educational Group | SSAT & ISEE Testing Guide 2016 – 2017 800 MY TUTOR | mytutor.com COMPARISON OF THE SSAT & ISEE COMPARISON OF THE SSAT & ISEE 37 SSAT-ISEE COMPARISON SSAT Format and Length ISEE Elementary Level Lower Level • 4 sections • 5 sections • 1 hour, 40 minutes • 2 hours, 20 minutes Middle and Upper Level Middle and Upper Level • 6 sections (including experimental section) • 5 sections COMPARISON OF THE SSAT & ISEE Math Incorrect answer penalty • ¼ raw score point No incorrect answer penalty Scaled Score ranges Scaled Score range The SSAT’s incorrect answer penalty means students need to be more careful about guessing. • Elementary – 900-1800 • 760-940 per section • Middle – 1320-2130 • Upper – 1500-2400 Scaled scores are given percentile ranks Scaled scores are given percentile ranks Percentiles are grouped into stanine scores Both tests convert raw scores to scaled scores, which are then given percentile ranks. We also offer free proctored practice tests in the community, affording students the opportunity to take “dress rehearsal” tests, so they know exactly what to expect on the real thing.
