Lupus Awareness Month
Whereas, systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly called lupus, is a chronic and lifethreatening autoimmune disease; and
Whereas, tens of thousands of Southern Californians and more than 1.5 million people
nationwide are afflicted with lupus or related diseases; and
Whereas, lupus primarily strikes women in their prime, affecting all aspects of their
lives, family, friendships, education and careers; and
Whereas, Lupus LA is marking 13 years of providing patient services and educational
programs for the victims of this devastating disease; and
Whereas, already in 2013, Lupus LA has awarded 13 research grants to some of the most
creative scientists in the nation who are striving to find new ways to treat lupus patients:
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this Resolution, the
Council of the City of Los Angeles hereby declares May 2013 to be Lupus Awareness
Month in the City of Los Angeles and further congratulate Lupus LA on its important
work, furthering critical research, serving lupus suffers and educating the public on the
devastating impacts of this disease:

RESOLUTION
A.C. Lyles Day
May 17th, 2013
WHEREAS, A. C. Lyles, born Andrew Craddock Lyles Jr., in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 17th, 1918 is best
known as an American movie producer for Paramount Pictures that produced a variety of westerns in the 1950s
and 1960s; and
WHEREAS, soon after high school in 1928, A.c. Lyles began working for Paramount studios after high school.
He began as an office boy, worked in the publicity department of Pine-Thomas Productions the second feature
unit of Paramount, and eventually became assistant to the producer on The Mountain, released in 1954; and
WHEREAS, because A.C. Lyles went to work for Paramount right after high school, he never attended college
- but he likes to say that Paramount became his university. Zukor and legendary director Cecil B. DeMille both
educated the kid about everything from how to run a business to how to dress for business: Zukor used to quote
the old saying to "Dress British, but think Yiddish." To this day, Lyles is known for his elegant Savile Row
suits; and
WHEREAS, in the 1950s and '60s, Lyles produced a string of profitable B-movie Westerns, including Black
Spurs and Johnny Reno. He believes the popularity of the genre will endure: "The Western is the most moral
story you can tell- good against evil, with the good always wirming out."; and
WHEREAS, A.C. Lyles first role as full producer was on Short Cut to Hell, released in 1957 that was a remake
of This Gunfor Hire and directed by James Cagney. He also produced nine episodes of the TV show Rawhide;
and
WHEREAS, in an interview with Alex Simon and Donald Keith, Lyles recalled he was approached by Paramount
to do a Western when they realized they had none on their schedule of releases. When Law of the Lawless did
well at the box office, Paramount asked him how many more he could do a year. Lyles replied "five" and he was
given the go ahead to produce more second features for the studio. Lyles filled his cast with many older
experienced actors who were his friends; and
WHEREAS, A.C. Lyles continued to produce a variety of traditional westerns for Paramount in the I 960s, as
well as other movies in other genres like the Korean War film The Young and the Brave the detective drama
Rogue's Gallery, and the science-fiction film Night of the Lepus for MGM that featured the American Southwest
menaced by giant mutant rabbits; and
WHEREAS, one of Lyles' old friend Ronald Reagan appointed Lyles to the President's Advisory Council o~"''''''''i'Jl3
Private Sector Initiatives in 1983, and in January of 1986 he was sworn onto the board. He regularly attende4;.~3;.;~~
White House meetings with Reagan and his staff and attended conferences overseas. During the Reagan and ",'c., ',;'" ",70
George Bush administrations he also functioned as Hollywood liaison, getting celebrities to entertain at the White
House and other presidential functions; and
WHEREAS, in 1984 Lyles received the George Washington Award of the Freedoms Foundation, presented to
him in the Oval Office by President Ronald Reagan; and
WHEREAS, Lyles' most recent work was as consulting producer on the HBO TV series Deadwood, created by
David Milch; and
WHEREAS, on May 1ih 2013, A.C. Lyles will be celebrating is 95th birthday:
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this Resolution, the Council ofthe City of Los
Angeles hereby declares May lih, 2013 as A.C. Lyles Day in the City of Los Angeles. The City of Los Angeles
hereby commends A.C. Lyles for all that he has done to enrich the lives of so many in the field of film and
entertainment. It is an honor and privileged to add my heartfelt best wishes during this joyous occasion. May the
sun shine on your celebration and may all your wishes come true. A.C. you are truly an angel in the City of
Angels!
