You'll laugh until you cry. br a ele ti Beyond the Danube – Dvořák, Kodály and Janáček 12th November 7.30pm Monmouth Choral Society’s autumn concert presents music by three giants of central Europe. The main work, Dvořák’s Mass in D, reveals him at his most affable and melodious; the texts are vivdly expressed in a direct and appealing musical style. Kodály’s Missa Brevis was composed during the Second World War, and beneath its energetic and folkish surface one can detect the distant sirens of alarm and danger. Some forty years earlier, Janáček set the Lord’s Prayer in his own distinct and inimitable trademark rhythms, repetitious phrases and lush, often dark sinuous harmonies. This is a chance to savour a Bohemian, a Moravian, and a Hungarian composer in three marvellous and evocative responses to key texts of the Catholic Church. 9 Priory Street, Monmouth, NP25 3BR www.themisbah.com Tel: (01600) 714940/772346 TICKETS £14 | £12 Child TICKET SALES: www.theblaketheatre.org BOX OFFICE: 01600 719401 [email protected] TICKETS £16 TICKET SALES: www.theblaketheatre.org BOX OFFICE: 01600 719401 [email protected] BAL L ET FIRST AID AND LIFE-SAVING CLASSES AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WHAT IS A FIRST AIDER? Hans Sachs is the most celebrated of the Mastersingers, a group of poets and musicians who have created complex rules for composing and performing their songs. Their world is turned upside down by free-thinking Walther who enters their singing competition to win his beloved Eva. Love conquers all in Berlioz’s sparkling take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Cymbeline is the ruler of a divided Britain. When Innogen, the only living heir, marries her sweetheart in secret, an enraged Cymbeline banishes him. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both. Innogen embarks on a dangerous journey that will reunite Cymbeline with a lost heir and reconcile the young lovers. Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance. King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his days without the burden of power. Misjudging his children’s loyalty and finding himself alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point. Shot using at least 10 high-definition cameras, allowing for close-ups of performers, and broadcast note by note in thrilling Dolby digital surround sound, they’re as close as you can get to a seat at the Met without a transatlantic flight. The season begins with a new production of Wagner’s opera, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in his first Live in HD performance. Nina Stemme stars as Isolde - a touchstone role she has sung with major opera companies around the world. Her Tristan is Australian heldentenor Stuart Skelton, who sang Siegmund in the Met’s Ring cycle in 2013. Simon Keenlyside makes his Met role debut as the unrepentant seducer in Tony Award winner Michael Grandage’s staging of Mozart’s masterpiece. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads a cast that includes Hibla Gerzmava as Donna Anna, Malin Byström as Donna Elvira, Serena Malfi as Zerlina, Adam Plachetka as Leporello, Matthew Rose as Masetto, Kwangchul Youn as the Commendatore, and Rolando Villazón in his Live in HD debut as Don Ottavio. One of the most highly praised operas of recent years, which had its premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 2000, Kaija Saariaho’s yearning medieval romance L’Amour de Loin (“Love From Afar”), has its Met premiere this season. The production is by Robert Lepage, coproduced with L’Opéra de Québec, where it premiered to acclaim last summer, in collaboration with Ex Machina. Debuting Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki leads the performance, which stars Susanna Phillips as Clémence, Eric Owens as Jaufré, and Tamara Mumford as the Pilgrim who carries messages of love between them. During the intervals, audiences are also treated to special features, including backstage footage and interviews with star performers. It is Christmas Eve and Drosselmeyer, the magician, sweeps young Clara away on a fantasy adventure in which time is suspended, the family living-room becomes a great battlefield, and a magical journey takes them through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets. Tchaikovsky’s glittering score, the gorgeous festive stage designs and The Royal Ballet’s captivating dancing make this Nutcracker the quintessential Christmas experience. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Semyon Bychkoz conducts a cast of young, up-and-coming talent, including American soprano Corinne Winters, in a new production of Mozart’s opera on the nature of love. Mozart’s classic opera Così fan tutte puts two pairs of lovers to the test – with great music but distinctly unexpected results. Approximate running time: 3 hrs 30 mins including 1 interval. One of Kenneth MacMillan’s first creations on becoming Director of The Royal Ballet in 1970, Anastasia is a dramatic and haunting exploration of Anna’s nightmare of memory and identity. To music by Tchaikovsky and Martinů, we follow the events leading to the murder of a family, and Anna’s confused dreams – or memories. A powerful, psychological challenge for the principal ballerina, this is a rare opportunity to see a landmark ballet by a major choreographer.
