Unit of Inquiry How We Express Ourselves Central idea: People share their culture through the arts. Lines of inquiry § Forms of art (form) § Connection between culture and art (connection function) § Sharing my culture (perspective/reflection) An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. Learner profile: open-‐minded, communicator Social Studies The children will: • formulate questions to gather information about culture and art • describe similarities and differences between themselves and others through the exploration of cultures and arts • identify and compare traditions and cultural artifacts observed by others in the class • use a variety of sources to gain information about culture and art from both a historical and a cultural perspective Mathematics The children will continue to explore numbers and number strategies through; • practicing the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100 • learning to read, write and compare numbers to 20 • using a range of counting, and grouping strategies with whole numbers • exploring skip counting by 2s, 10s • learning visual and symbolic patterns for numbers to 10 (dice, dominoes, subitizing) • exploring “teen” numbers (10-‐19) • beginning to explore addition and substation within 10 • investigating Odd and Even numbers The children will explain strategies using a combination of words, numbers and pictures. They will be able to use their own language in conjunction with mathematical language (introduce symbols (+, -‐ , =) and writing simple equations to explain mathematical thinking. Language The children will continue to explore traditional stories from around the world to enhance their understanding of how cultures are expressed through literature and drama. The writing focus is narrative retell. The children will learn to plan, illustrate and share their thinking. They will: • enjoy writing and value their own efforts • write informally about their own ideas, experiences and feelings using simple sentence structures • read their own writing to the teacher and to classmates, • participate in shared and guided writing, observing the teacher’s model, asking questions and offering suggestions • begin to include basic punctuation –full stops and capital letters. • create illustrations to match their own written text • demonstrate an awareness of the conventions of written text, for example, sequence, spacing, directionality • read and understand the meaning of self-‐ selected and teacher-‐selected texts at an appropriate level • use meaning, visual, contextual and memory cues. • participate in learning engagements involving Visual Arts: exploring various forms of visual arts and culture with visiting artist and through a gallery trip. Performing Arts: exploring how we can express ourselves through verbal and non-‐verbal forms of communication; and how music impacts on the way we feel. Physical Education: Gymnastics: exploring balancing, climbing, and floor gymnastics.
