Lids for Kids.
Lids for Kids awareness campaign for children’s mental health culminated with more than 4,000
friends in the Niagara region wearing their hats with a Lids for Kids button to show they care!
Posters, honour boxes and buttons were distributed to high profile locations so that members of our
community had the opportunity to drop in a toonie and take a button. In fact, more than 250 honour
box host locations joined together for the week to share the clear message. This included several
elementary schools where Gayle Grass’s newest book, ‘He
Shoots! He Scores!’ generated conversation about mental
health challenges and stigma. Secondary schools successfully
hosted Lids for Kids as a Students’ Council led initiative.
Lakeshore Catholic High School students’ council led a’s
the entire student body in their effort to help Niagar
children with mental health problems.

Niagara Falls Sunrise for the seed money which made
Lids for Kids possible. West49’s gift allowed the campaign’s late
expansion due to amazing response across the region. The awareness and anti-stigma activities
were greatly enhanced by Print Media Sponsorship from The Niagara Falls Review, The Welland
Tribune and The St. Catharines Standard. 105.7 EZ Rock’s Broadcast Media Sponsorship over the
course of the week was a crucial component of the campaign’s success.
Thanks to friends across the Niagara region who showed they care about children’s mental health
by wearing their favourite hat with a Lids for Kids button on May 7!

A Very
Members of the NCYS Foundation Board of Directors and Foundation
staff played host to 400 guests to pay tribute to Dr. Robin Williams as
she was presented with the inaugural Hope Award. The Hope Award
will be given out annually to recognize outstanding contributions made
to improve the lives of children, youth and their families living with
mental health problems. Keynote speaker, Rex Murphy, shared his
witty, politically laced humour. NCYS Executive Director, Ellis Katsof,
challenged everyone to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and
mental health problems. Plans are already underway for next year and
details will appear in the Fall edition of “Focus”.
