Lids for Kids awareness campaign for children’s mental health culminated with more than 4,000 friends in the Niagara region wearing their hats with a Lids for Kids button to show they care! Posters, honour boxes and buttons were distributed to high profile locations so that members of our community had the opportunity to drop in a toonie and take a button. In fact, more than 250 honour box host locations joined together for the week to share the clear message. This included several elementary schools where Gayle Grass’s newest book, ‘He Shoots! He Scores!’ generated conversation about mental health challenges and stigma. Secondary schools successfully hosted Lids for Kids as a Students’ Council led initiative. Lakeshore Catholic High School students’ council led a’s the entire student body in their effort to help Niagar children with mental health problems. NCYS Foundation was selected to receive the proceeds of this year’s event. Canada Border Services Agency and Citizenship and Immigration Canada employees from the McLeod Road Office in Niagara Falls raised $1,210 for children in the Residential Treatment program. The Canadian Federation of University Women in St. Catharines bought many, many books for children in the Residential Treatment program. The Hope Award will be given out annually to recognize outstanding contributions made to improve the lives of children, youth and their families living with mental health problems. Keynote speaker, Rex Murphy, shared his witty, politically laced humour. NCYS Executive Director, Ellis Katsof, challenged everyone to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and mental health problems.
