Comfort in & out Aporti Palace in Milan
thanks to Climaveneta Integra Units.
Historic seat of Royal Post, Aporti Palace has now become a new office building designed for offices
and commercial uses
Officially reborn in the heart of Milano the new Aporti Palace, former
seat of the Italian Post Office, designed back in the thirties by Ulisse
Stacchini, the same architect of the Central Station. The project,
coordinated by architects Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel & Partners,
provided a high quality standard in the structure and above all for what
concerns the plant design.
In order to increase the energy efficiency of the building and reset CO2
and pollutants emissions in the heart of the city, Engineer Marazzi by
Planning Engineering has adopted four multi-purpose heat pump
Integra units, ERACS-Q by Climaveneta. The main effort was to
demonstrate to the client the advantages of Climaveneta solution based
exclusively on multi-purpose units, compared to a traditional central
cooling and boiler one. To this propose Climaveneta carried out an
energy analysis on the building allowing to dispose of the basic data for
correct simulation of thermal loads. The annual thermal demand of the
building was estimated at about 3,835,160 kWh/ year, while cooling at
about 1,925,850 kWh/ year.
The power absorption of the proposed unit, calculated taking into
account the real capacity of the multi-purpose unit to produce for free a
portion of energy required is about 1,082,520 kWh. Accepting the rough
calculation of the annual efficiency average as the ratio of total energy
output and energy consumption, we get a TER of 5:32, a value
absolutely unreachable by any other conventional air source chiller.

with standard chiller and boiler, to meet the request of air conditioning
in summer and winter given above, primary energy consumption would
amount at 3,913,430 h kW/ year (high-performance boiler, medium =
0.98) + 1,413,990 h kW/ year (high-efficiency chillers, medium EER =
3.00). It is so easy to calculate that Climaveneta Integra units only
consume 2,384,400 kWhper year, saving in primary energy
consumption by more than 55%.
In addition to the drastic reduction of running costs, the choice of multipurpose units instead of chiller plus boiler solution brings other
significant benefits such as reduction of technical space to be allocated,
having to place one unit instead of two, plant simplifying because
exchangers provide water connections and does not require any special
reverse side of 'cold' and 'hot' hydraulic circuits or any auxiliary
disposal.
Are also not required neither the supply line of fuel for the boiler or even
the supply and installation of the chimney and procedures for
compliance with regulations. Operation on site are reduced and
simplified because the units require only connection to electrical supply;
in addition maintenance is also on a single machine. As multi-purpose
unit is self-adaptable to the needs of the plant, it is not expected
summer / winter switching and unit will ensure the simultaneous and
independent hot and cold water circuits intended for. The coefficient of
effect twice higher than that of a traditional electric chiller without
recovery and there are no direct CO2 emissions: the units are
electrically powered, so there are no exhaust fumes into the atmosphere
at installation and finally also in active recovery mode, unit can grant
maximum efficiency and respect for the environment.
Within the Climaveneta Integra range the planner selected 4 ERACS / Q
2722 / LT / SL units. The plant total cooling capacity is 2,800kW and
heating capacity is 2,400 kW.
The units have been selected in SL version to ensure the minimum
noise level. In particular, the size selected shows a sound pressure level
of 58 dB (A) at 10 m. To ensure the functioning of the units installed on
the roof, even in extreme operation conditions, it has also been
designed a special version able to ensure the full load operation down
to -10 ° C of external air temperature.
To ensure high standards of reliability and comfort throughout the year
the two compressors are actually working on two independent cooling
circuits and each circuit works with a semi-hermetic screw compressor
using R134a refrigerant. In the event of a failure of one of the two, the
other is then able to cover at least 50% of demand, avoiding the total
loss of service and ensuring the end user maximum system reliability.
The choice of refrigerant R134a, which meet the standards of ecosustainability imposed by the European Community with an index ODP
"ozone depletion Protection" of 0, has been driven by the fact that this
Refrigerant does not have any negative impact to the atmosphere, even
in case of accidental spillage in the room or during unit disposal.
The plant side shell and tube exchangers, designed by Climaveneta, are
optimized to ensure maximum efficiency of heat exchange process.
Providing asymmetric steps of refrigerant, heat transfer coefficient
obtained has been maximized and the unit works between the optimal
pressure levels, ensuring a more efficient refrigeration cycle, then lower
energy absorption and therefore lower running costs.
INTEGRA multipurpose units by Climaveneta overcome the traditional
chiller and boiler system, ensuring perfect comfort all year round,
without CO2 emissions in the atmosphere and reducing running costs
by more than 55%.
