Fish and Skeletons
Question 4:
Complete the following story about the fish by
filling in the missing words:
When we went on holiday to Cape Town, my parents took me to the Aquarium at the Waterfront. An
Aquarium is a place where animals with an 1._____________ habitat is kept for the purposes of
education and research. There are many wonderful sea animals, but I like the fish the best. We
were accompanied by a special guide that knows everything there is to know about fish.
She first took us to see the 2._______________, which is our National Fish. This fish is an example of a Bony Fish. All fish are part of the Vertebrate family, which means they have an
3.______skeleton and a 4.______ bone. Did you know that fish make up the biggest component of
all living Vertebrates on earth? I always thought a jellyfish is also part of this family, but she told
us that a jellyfish is an 5._______________ and has a 6.________skeleton which makes it part
of the 7.____________ family.
She then took us to see how the fish are fed. Bony Fish have sharp teeth in their mouth with which
they eat. A fish needs its eyes and nose to find its food, therefore their eyes do not have
8.__________, but are covered with a thin, transparent 9.____________ . I asked her how a
fish can breathe underwater and she explained that they have special organs called
10.____________ which are covered by 11.______________ through which they breathe. Tiny
blood vessels inside the 12.____________ absorb 13._____________ and that is why they are
red in colour.
We then went to a big tank and saw thousands of little silvery fish swimming very fast! These are
the sardines and are very well equipped to move quickly through the water and away from their
enemies. The skin of bony fish is covered with 14._____________ that are arranged like roof
tiles, with the openings facing 15._____________. This helps the little fish swim with
16.___________ resistance given by the water. Their bodies are 17._______________shaped
and they have 18.__________ glands that secretes 19.___________ which further helps to
make them move faster in the water.
Bony fish have two types of fins that help them move through the water, the Paired and Unpaired
fins. The 20._____________ and 21._______________ fins are part of the Paired fins and help
the fish to 22.____________ and 23.______________ through the water. The
24._____________ and 25.___________ fins help to increase the 26._______________
surface of the body and to 27.____________________________. The tail fin, which is also
known as the 28._____________ fin helps to 29.____________________________________
and is called the 30._____________ organ of the fish. I asked her how a fish knows how deep it
can swim and she explained that a fish has a 31.___________________ on the sides of its body
that gauges 32.____________ and 33.________________.
I then asked if we can now go view the largest of the Bony fish, the shark, but she told me a shark
is not a Bony Fish, it is 34.______________________!

the type of habitat.
(2)
Aquatic, inland, because this is a freshwater aquatic habitat.
3.
What does the term ‘interdependence’ mean?
(1)
Living things depend on other living things and non-living things within a habitat to survive. Animals depend on plants and plants on animals and both depend on the environment.
4.
Explain the interdependent relationship between the crocodile and bird in the picture. (2)
The crocodile is dependent on the bird to clean its teeth, the bird is dependent on the crocodile
for food.
5.
Explain in detail the difference between Arthropods and Molluscs, using an example of
each in your explanation.
(8)
Both Arthropods and Molluscs are Invertebrates. Arthropods have an exoskeleton rich in calcium
or chitin and they are divided into the following groups; insects e.g. flies, arachnids, e.g. spiders, crustaceans, e.g. prawns, diplopods, e.g. Millipedes and Chilopods, e.g. Centipedes.
Molluscs have a hydrostatic skeleton which means their bodies are filled with fluid. They usually
have a thin, moist skin and they breath through their skins. Examples are sea anemones, jellyfish, an earthworms.
6.
Which one of these animals is an Omnivore?
Prawn (some fish are omnivores)
7.
Compare endoskeletons to exoskeletons and list the functions of each.
(1)
(6)
Vertebrates have endoskeletons, which is an internal skeleton made of bone and cartilage. The
functions of the endoskeleton are to support the body, to give the body shape, to protect the
internal organs and to allow movement using joints. Invertebrates have exoskeletons, which is
an external skeleton. The exoskeleton provides a place of attachment for muscles, protects the
animal and prevents the animal from drying out.

Answer the following questions:
Look at the spines of these two mammals. List one similarity and one difference
between these two spines:
Similarity: Both consist of vertebrae that protects the spinal column
(2)
Difference: Spine of a human keeps the human upright, spine of animal keeps its body
horizontal.
3.
What are the functions of the skeletons of Vertebrate animals?
Skeletons give the bodies of Vertebrates shape.
Supports their body weight.
Protects the internal organs.
Provides a place where muscles can connect to.
Joints of skeletons allows for movement in Vertebrate animals.
