Fifth Sunday of Easter
The WAY:
Living Spiritual Sacrifices
Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,
Christ is Risen; Truly He is Risen!
Our Good Shepherd invites us to follow him, who is
“the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” But how do we do that
in our daily lives? Saint Peter, in his first letter, explains
how:
like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual
house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
the priest. Then when he invites us, “Lift up your hearts,”
and we respond, “We lift them up to the Lord,” we indicate that we intend to offer ourselves in union with Christ
to God the Father.
As we strive to embrace the Father’s will in all that we
do, in all that we have, and in all that we aspire to, then
we are offering ourselves as a living sacrifice pleasing to
God. As we do this in union with Jesus Christ, we bear
witness that Jesus is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life”
for us. Christ is the Way to a living relationship with the
Father; Christ is the Truth of God’s love and mercy; and
Christ is the Life that frees us to live our lives fully and
freely as God’s beloved sons and daughters. Let us follow Him, offering ourselves as a living sacrifice.
Our Good Shepherd is “the Lamb of God who takes
away the sins of the world.” In his life-giving sacrifice to the
Father on the Cross, the Risen Lord offered the perfect
sacrifice, which perfected all other sacrifices. The beautiful
Easter Preface proclaims, “By the oblation of his Body,
he brought the sacrifices of old to fulfillment in the reality of the Cross and, by commending himself to you
for our salvation, showed himself the Priest, the Altar,
and the Lamb of sacrifice.”
The “Lamb once slain” makes us, as Saint Peter writes,
“a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people
of his own.” Forming a royal priesthood, Christians must
have a sacrifice to offer, for sacrifice is the distinguishing
mark of priesthood. Of course, we have Christ’s sacrifice
of the Cross to offer in the Eucharist. But Saint Paul in his
letter to the Romans further illuminates what Christians
have to offer: “I urge you therefore, brothers, by the
mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship.”
The New Testament identifies, as the sacrifice that Christians offer, the daily, living sacrifice or offering of oneself in
obedience to God’s holy will as the offering pleasing to the
Lord.
What does this mean? Each day as we make our Morning Offering, we are offering all that we are, all that we
have, and all that we will do as a sacrifice that may be
pleasing to the Lord. What we have to offer is so very LITTLE; yet united with Christ’s offering on the cross, an offering we make each day in the Eucharist, our offering is SO
VERY PLEASING to the LORD. This is the sacrifice that is
pleasing to God.
In the Joy of our Risen Lord,
Fr. Allan F. Wolfe

Renewal at St. Joseph’s
through Intentional Discipleship
ALPHA – Tremendous Success! As the first cycle of the
Alpha Program approaches its completion, we are preparing to offer it again in September. For anyone looking to deepen the relational aspect of their Catholic life
with the Lord, you may find Alpha to be very enriching.
Also, consider extending the invitation to those who
have no church, or to family or friends who have drifted
away.
Become a Perpetual Adorer - Sign up for 1 hour a week
as a perpetual adorer in our Adoration Chapel. St. Joseph’s Perpetual Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a
day, except while Mass is celebrated, 7 days a week,
all year long. This is a powerful way to be renewed by
the Lord personally, as well as promote the renewal of
St. Joseph’s through intercessory prayer. This is a
wonderful way to introduce our children to personal
prayer with Jesus.
Strategic Plan – In the next few months, the core team
working with our Strategic Plan for Evangelization will
be meeting with the ministries and groups of the parish
to assist them in reflecting on the Plan and find ways to
implement it in those specific areas of parish life. The
Plan can be found on the homepage of our website
beneath the Welcome, under “Intentional Discipleship
Plan.”
MAKE EWTN PART OF YOUR TRAVEL PLANS! Take a
